I guess in general ppl with similar backgrounds will have easier time finding common topics and understanding each others. It's not limited to Asians, or color of skin, or gender or age. I bet if there is a white guy who speaks aisan language and understand asian culture well then you'll find him among the asians as well.

btw it still cracks me up when I hear the term "orientals" for "asians", kind of like "injens" for "indians".

Agreed.

dont know if that's the reason for the suggestion for not 'mingling' but that thought by itself i agree.

for Asians, who as an ethnicity have been in this country for over 200yrs, and the ONLY ethnicity for which a FEDERAL law was applied (talk about racist land of the free?) to exclude them from coming to USA after some had come and thrived... we have ZERO progress in culture and society (MEDIA) and law.

In business yes as in private business but not in Corporate America.

Here's a point...

A black friend of mine bashed a TV show that's about a Spanish family (GeorgeLopez) and said hey, what's this show on for that NO ONE CAN RELATE TO....

I'm like whoa, perhaps Spanish people can relate to it, but if your point is that whites and you-black can't thats fine... because in that train of thought then there is Friends, Wings, Frasier, GoldenGirls ('White shows') and there was Martin and a bunch of 'black' sitcoms etc.

But for you to say a Spanish show shouldn't be on cuz no one can relate... guess what, an Asian cannot relate to ANYTHING ON TV.

And why, because we have no influence in writing, scripts, screenplays, editors, directors, production houses, nothing.

Asians need a 'MEDIA MOGUL' like Russell Simmons or a pioneer like SpikeLee.

It doesn't help that stiffs like Vera Wang or Connie Chung have done ZERO for Asians.

Heh heh, for us to 'take some time' to get integrated.... Sad ain't it?

It hasn't taken Puerto Ricans very long, the influx came in the 1950's, along with Cubans etc, not 200yrs ago like Chinese (orginally from Canton etc.)

Now you have people like Jennifer Lopez and Lantina magazines, TV shows on Sunday talking about Latino culture, annual Parades down 5th Avenue in New York... Well, the Columbus Circle parade molestation thing a few years ago sucked.. but.

We need more Harold and Kumar!

Oh and William Hung! :D

I.

I have a friend who hung out with tons of white teen friends when he was that age, growing up. He stopped when it came to college because he realized his 'white friends' would deep down NEVER accept him equal to another White friend.

In other others, he realized the set limits on their friendship to him.

and for myself, I had a white friend tell me... hey stand over there.... and I wondered what the heck was going on...

Then I realized, he had a bunch of his fellow 'WHITE" friends in the neighorbhood pass by, and he at that moment didnt want to be associated with me. To this day I remmeber that, and I remember them saying 'Gee, you changed' to the 'friend' of mine who told me to stand over there.

Few years later from that another 'white' friend, started hanging with a bunch of his ultra 'Italian' friends, and when walking past my door front one day, my friend did not even turn his head to acknowledge me.

Would a white 'buddy' EVER be treated like this from his Asian buddies? They can't say they have had this kind of doublestandard experience growing up.

(before people start saying oh I know a Brad that had an Asian buddy and when Brad went to the Asian buddy's house the Asian's parents started calling him White Ghost in Chinese and Brad only found out because the Asian buddy told him afterwards... well no, that's indirect, I'm talking about friends treating friends directly.)

There's more crap I've seen in my life from 'mingling'.

Yes I agree seriously. Comedy is the path to build from because everyone needs to laugh... it's one universal way to reach mainstream acceptance.

The other would be in sports who has charisma.

The OP said it's a case at his college. You guys should read before jumping on his case.

Anyway, I want to dispel any myth about Asians hanging out with only Asians. The Americanized Asians don't exclusively hang out with Asians. The FOB's hang out with other FOB's because of the language barrier and/or they're better able to relate to one another than with someone who grew up in a different country. There are other reasons but I won't mention it here.

Really, I think using asian when you mean oriental is hilarious. Asia is the largest continent on the planet. Asian can mean Israeli, Persian, Arab, Pakistani, Indian, mongol, Siberian while oriental means someone from the orient which is South East Asia. You know, korean, Vietnamese, Laotian, Chinese, Cambodian. Oriental is much more specific then Asian. Of course, if you really wanted to be accurate you would take a couple of seconds and actually find out which country they are from. That way you won't have to use Asian or Oriental. Instead you can say things like "My Korean friend said..."

I'd have to also say I agree with the OP. I haven't really gone to much into the situation because with me if someone is rude and/or very xenophobic thats pretty much the end of the interaction in my book. I'm usually out at that point.

Also its orientals people. Stop taking Asian for yourself and being so whiney. Like smc13 said Asian can mean Indian, Pakistani, Persian, Arab, Russian or anything. Its not fair for one group/race of people to take the classification for themselves.

Asian means someone from asia. India is in asia. Therefore an indian is an asian. Do I need to pull out an atlas or a map?

http://www.mapquest.com/atlas/?region=asia
I think you already aptly explained why this is annoying in your previous post. It is technically correct, but these people are using Asian to describe only a specific subset of the people who live in Asia.

It's not fair, but widely accepted. When you think Asian, it's going to be Jap/Chinese/Korean/Viet/Flip. SOUTH Asian, it's brown - Pakistani, Indian.

Amongst Orientals in America it is. In Britain, Asians actually means Persians, Pakistanis, Indians etc.

From wikipedia: Oriental in its most literal form means of or from the Orient (East), as opposed to Occidental meaning from the Occident (West). In more general usage, oriental means of or from the east, and has been applied as an adjective to both objects, places and people. In North America the usage of oriental as applied to people may be considered to have racist connotations and the terms Asian or Asian American are used instead, although this terminology causes some bemusement outside of North America. The British usage of "Oriental" usually refers to the "Near East" and Western Asia.

Personally, I don't find being called Oriental "racist" ... just annoying.

Lemme guess, you were trying to hit on an asian girl but she didn't want to hang out with you. You then noticed she was hanging around several asian guys and you rationalized your rejection with the conclusion that asians only hang around other asians.

I think I'm a genius.

But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And if you hatin you're bound to get irate
Yeah madness is what you demonstrate
And that's exactly how anger works and operates
You gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love y'all

Hey, it was worth a shot. I still have no idea why someone would feel the need to make such a large generalization.
