Why do asians only hang out with other asians?

It's not just asians that do this, it's {pick any group of people with similar interests and background}, and it's not all asians, and even asians who generally hang out with other asians will not only hang out with other asians. I'm sorry but I can't help but interpret this question as extremely biased and strongly indicative of racism. Maybe if you tone it down from a global generalization to a specific question about your school, ... maybe then the question would at least be remotely valid. Maybe.

I feel more comfortable around other Asians. I don't think it's abnormal. If you're white and find yourself in a group of predominantly black/Hispanic/Asian people, would you not feel self-conscious? Sometimes it's just easier being around people who share the same background.

That being said, I don't necessarily like hanging out with people just because they're Asian. I can't relate to a lot of them, even my cousin, who's into the whole gangsta/ricer thing. Most of my friends are Asian-American young professionals.

Really, I think using asian when you mean oriental is hilarious. Asia is the largest continent on the planet. Asian can mean Israeli, Persian, Arab, Pakistani, Indian, mongol, Siberian while oriental means someone from the orient which is South East Asia. You know, korean, Vietnamese, Laotian, Chinese, Cambodian. Oriental is much more specific then Asian. Of course, if you really wanted to be accurate you would take a couple of seconds and actually find out which country they are from. That way you won't have to use Asian or Oriental. Instead you can say things like "My Korean friend said..."

From wikipedia: Oriental in its most literal form means of or from the Orient (East), as opposed to Occidental meaning from the Occident (West). In more general usage, oriental means of or from the east, and has been applied as an adjective to both objects, places and people. In North America the usage of oriental as applied to people may be considered to have racist connotations and the terms Asian or Asian American are used instead, although this terminology causes some bemusement outside of North America. The British usage of "Oriental" usually refers to the "Near East" and Western Asia.

Personally, I don't find being called Oriental "racist" ... just annoying.

Wikopedia isn't a real source. You have no idea who wrote it or what their background is.

It's a huge conspiracy. They are planning on taking over the world. They have what, like 1.3 billion people in China and are just buying their time until they haul out that ninja and samurai suits and give us all the beat down. All the other asians know that if you aren't with them, you're against them. I'm hoping that as a white ninja they will spare me, but I'm not 100% confident.

I'd have to also say I agree with the OP. I haven't really gone to much into the situation because with me if someone is rude and/or very xenophobic thats pretty much the end of the interaction in my book. I'm usually out at that point.

Also its orientals people. Stop taking Asian for yourself and being so whiney. Like smc13 said Asian can mean Indian, Pakistani, Persian, Arab, Russian or anything. Its not fair for one group/race of people to take the classification for themselves.

It's not fair, but widely accepted. When you think Asian, it's going to be Jap/Chinese/Korean/Viet/Flip. SOUTH Asian, it's brown - Pakistani, Indian.

When I think Asian, I think of my Indian brother-in-law and my Pakistani friends. then I think of my high school friends from laos, vietnam, cambodia, and korea, then I think of my college friend from Burma. Btw, are my philipino friends considered asian or pacific Islanders?

I was FOB ten years ago. When I just came to America in high school year, I tried my best to fit into white classmate's circle. there are smart whites people who simply are polite to me but keep me a distance ( they know I can't help them with thier career in footall , cheerleader , or anything at all 'cause I don't speak well English). And there are hippie type of white groups. I try to fit in with them, they make fun of me and mock at me. That 's fine. I look at bright side, friends do those to friends. But after teasing me, they ask me to leave them 'cause they think I am not cool. Well fine... And there are some immigrants just like me that no one else wants to hang out with. So of course we hang out together. Yes that sound sucks but everyone does not create equal. FOB need to strive to be equal .

I also think there is a lot of division in the asian community. If you are an asian living in North America and have been here for more than 10 years, ask yourself how many friends do you have that are asians but have lived here for less than 5 years?

Just look at the term FOB. It has become the asian equivalent of the N word. A phrase that is accepted if spoken by an asian but somehow not okay if used by another race.

I see a general divide between recent asian immigrants and asians born in this country.

I won't even go in to the divisions stemming from old feuds (taiwan/china, korea/japan, etc...).

It is usually imported Asians. Most US born Asians don't group with foreigners. I guess many are just shy and feel better in their own group but it is something that I have noticed.

I hung out with either sex and/or any race when in school. But I am very open minded person.

I am dating a Asian girl right now (I am white) and she was from a strict asian family, no dating boys, when old enouhg to date (college years) only asian boys from OUR country etc...

Well after having cancer and having her future "husband" cheat/dump her she meet me and I told her about dating, as before you just found someone that you had some stuff in common and get married then get to really know each other. I told her no to that but I still wnated to see her.
She also has not, and will not, tell her parents about me as she was raised to make her parents happy and dating a white boy is a probable no. So unless I ask her to marry me I might never meet any of her family.


And this is from a woman that is 30 years old, makes about 80K in NC, and owns her own house by herself.

Of course there are a lot of whites, blacks, etc.. that only hang out with those of thier same type. But I think strict asian familys keep asians close to each other and also spread a LOT of stereotypes (don;t get me started on the questions my asian girl has asked me) about others.

Best thing to do is be nice and see who is open minded.
