it'll be some time before we're as "integrated" other ethnicities who have been here longer
Not really. A higher percentage of Asian Americans are college educated than any other race.

well admittedly it should start now with asians in college being more open and trying harder, no ?

hell it wouldn't even be an active effort on any side, time will dissolve many barriers, our presence alone is enough for eventual integration, its simple thermodynamics

my point was that there hasn't been enough time for easy, painless integration

i'm not sure if our education alone determines our status

Actually, it's not "one circumstance." At my university, there was a campus full of Asians. Most of them lived there year around all their years there. But it's probably true that they stay in one group because of the language and culture. Though I knew exeptions... some had English as first language and still didn't mingle with others... that much.

Asians are everywhere they want to be. They dominate science and technology. Not business and culture so much, but that's not what the typical Asian wants to do. There's nothing that says insider more than affirmative action programs in education and business that would sooner take a white person than yet another well qualified Asian.

i doubt you can speak for such a large and diverse group no matter how you belong to it, your characterization of a "typical asian" shortchanges him -- this isn't a country that respects science and technology but business and culture, and for every asian who is where he wants to be there is another who isn't, pretty much the same for all people

i see every ethnicity mingling amongst their own, particularly so when the bunch are immigrants.

there are a lot less shall it be said, white immigrants these days.

the only ones i can think of are Russian based immigrants, if they are considered 'white?' and they do mingle in bunches as best as other immigrant ethnicities.

where whites mingle most amongst themeselves? perhaps in corp. america inside buildings and then bars which cater to the whitecollar crowd... country clubs etc.

blacks don't mingle amongst themselves? depends, I have seen both sides and it's not more or less than anyone else... they kind of have the same thing that Whites have, there aren't an awful lot of black immigrants (but more so than white)... so the ones that stay amongst themselves or 'don't mingle outside' depends on the neighborhoods they come from.

major immigrant groups are mexicans, dominicans, puertoricans, indians, muslims(i know, have to categorize by religion) and Chinabased Asians... all them mingle amongst themselves, it's natural.

Cuz we B keepin it realz......4 realz kid. iight

Truth is most asians since they're immigrants tend to feel insecure without 'their kinds' around because either their understanding of the English language isn't up to par or they can't score with the white ladies.

It's not my fault my parents are from Hong Kong and speak Cantonese!!!

i think in 50-100yrs, Cantonese could be dead.

Their personal preference?

I'm Chinese but the majority of the people I've hung out with and hang out with are white. (The past 6 women I've dated were all white) I grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood w/ white friends. My good guy friends now are mostly Asian but they're whitewashed like myself.

I have nothing against hanging out with groups of Asians, but I identify and get along with whites easier I guess.

Well one of my housemate during school was a multi-generation Asian and all his friends including gf are whites. But for me I speak fluent chinese and just ok english, and with a heavy dose of asian culture background, I find it difficult to hang out with Americans. When I was among a group of whites at school I really felt like an outsider.

I guess in general ppl with similar backgrounds will have easier time finding common topics and understanding each others. It's not limited to Asians, or color of skin, or gender or age. I bet if there is a white guy who speaks aisan language and understand asian culture well then you'll find him among the asians as well.

btw it still cracks me up when I hear the term "orientals" for "asians", kind of like "injens" for "indians".

East Asians are a tribal people. This is self preservation behavior passed on over hundreds of years of human evolution.

There is further separation within East Asians as well.

Bottomline: There is no problem with sticking to your kind. It has helped our kind to this point.

Eventually, intermarriage will diversify the gene pool.

dont know if that's the reason for the suggestion for not 'mingling' but that thought by itself i agree.

for Asians, who as an ethnicity have been in this country for over 200yrs, and the ONLY ethnicity for which a FEDERAL law was applied (talk about racist land of the free?) to exclude them from coming to USA after some had come and thrived... we have ZERO progress in culture and society (MEDIA) and law.

In business yes as in private business but not in Corporate America.

Here's a point...

A black friend of mine bashed a TV show that's about a Spanish family (GeorgeLopez) and said hey, what's this show on for that NO ONE CAN RELATE TO....

I'm like whoa, perhaps Spanish people can relate to it, but if your point is that whites and you-black can't thats fine... because in that train of thought then there is Friends, Wings, Frasier, GoldenGirls ('White shows') and there was Martin and a bunch of 'black' sitcoms etc.

But for you to say a Spanish show shouldn't be on cuz no one can relate... guess what, an Asian cannot relate to ANYTHING ON TV.

And why, because we have no influence in writing, scripts, screenplays, editors, directors, production houses, nothing.

Asians need a 'MEDIA MOGUL' like Russell Simmons or a pioneer like SpikeLee.

It doesn't help that stiffs like Vera Wang or Connie Chung have done ZERO for Asians.

Heh heh, for us to 'take some time' to get integrated.... Sad ain't it?

It hasn't taken Puerto Ricans very long, the influx came in the 1950's, along with Cubans etc, not 200yrs ago like Chinese (orginally from Canton etc.)

Now you have people like Jennifer Lopez and Lantina magazines, TV shows on Sunday talking about Latino culture, annual Parades down 5th Avenue in New York... Well, the Columbus Circle parade molestation thing a few years ago sucked.. but.
