Exactly my observation. Sometimes people just want to sit back and talk in their native language, and I think it's easier to relax and joke around in one's primary language because one knows all the linguistic nuances.
I fall into the category of an Asian who speaks English as a first language. I always felt out of place hanging out with people who spoke nothing but Mandarin, and people looked at me funny when I couldn't speak Chinese with them. It's not my fault my parents are from Hong Kong and speak Cantonese!!!

Generally speaking, when I was at college the Asians who spoke English as a second language hung out with others who spoke the same first language that they did. Pretty obvious as to why.
