Why do asians only hang out with other asians?

it's not just an asian thing. i live in vancouver so there are all kinds of minorities here. seems like most races socialize with their own kind more often.

language is a big factor most of the time so it seems. a lot of people are more comfortable speaking their naive langauges even after living here for many years. of course it's not the only factor.

Generally speaking, when I was at college the Asians who spoke English as a second language hung out with others who spoke the same first language that they did. Pretty obvious as to why.

The Asians who spoke English as a first language hung out with everybody.

I have it on good authority that Asians are actually aliens. They hang together to plot the takeover of the US. At night they retreat to the center of the Earth where they enter a giant coccon and lay in a nudity pile to conserve heat.

I noticed the same thing in high school and even more in college. Like someone else said, the American born asians who speak fluent english will talk to everyone, while the ones who only speak engrish will mostly stick to themselves. I can see why, because I've talked to a lot of foreign-born Asian people and I honestly just can't understand what they are trying to say to me. There are a few people like this around town that I've known for years but they probably think I'm strange for always answering questions they never asked.

This is the case at my college. I see blacks and whites together all the time, but the asians never mingle. Why?

I generally hang out with..well anyone, really, but I understand exactly what you're saying.

They might be FOBs (fresh off the boat - immigrants) and FOBs don't feel comfortable around non-of-their-country because 1) difficulty speaking the language 2) total difference in culture. Also, you non-asians have a tendency to make fun of "engrish" and I think feel a small bit of superiority over the person who can't for the life of them pronounce "molarity" and "molality" differently. I think people are sensitive to that, or any kind of impatience you might express in your demeanor/word choice/facial expressions. Really turns people off.

Also, from my experience, whites and blacks really do not understand asian culture at all. The only asians I see hanging out with white/black non-studious/non-geeks people are usually twinkies. And by twinkie I mean there really is no asian left in them - they might as well not be asian.

I'm south korean, born in teh U S A. Of course, I have the special ability to understand engrish, since my parents have been speaking it to me all my life. partially fluent in korean - and personally, I'm more comfortable around mostly asian kids, although that is not always the case. (and by not always, I mean ~30%)

I'm korean, and I hang out with everyone.

My theory is asians probably only hang out with other asians because they're sick and tired of trying to say people's name in chinese. Just so much easier not to deal with that, and other stuff of that nature 😉

it's cuz u live in VA, there's not enough asians there 🙂

however, with the case of fobs, i'd say the majority of them only hang out with other fobs.

Wouldn't that depend on where in VA. the DC area has a really diverse population.

Btw, what is a fob?
