I live in a red state and our city has proposed a 32% water rate increase this year and an additional 3% next year because they are close to becoming insolvent. I honestly don't think they know what the hell they are doing. There has also been great cost increases for things like chlorine, water pipe, labor, etc. These costs increases should be affecting all water treatment facilities nationwide.

I can only speak to the places I've lived. But I've seen water districts defer maintenance year after year when there is opposition to rate increases till it all catches up in a cataphoric manner. The sad truth is we under invested in our infrastructure for 50 years and the bill is coming due.

Agreed. The bad part is the water isn't drinkable without using a filter. It wasn't like that when I was growing up in the 70's and 80's.

The commonly cited number is 80% of water usage goes to agriculture. Even if we pretend banning car washes and lawn watering could save 25% that’s still 25% of the 20% going to urban/residential use so 5% overall.

But since there’s agricultural profits to be made you are just going to have be a little thirsty.

Or you can move here. Sometimes we go 3 months without rain, sometimes we get a foot and half in 2 hours. Sometimes we have boil notices because hurricanes or freezes have screwed up the water system.
Move where? I thought I said I was in CA. SoCal, technically. Fortunately I own stuff elsewhere or I'd be trying to find a way to bounce, so I'm not here all the time but I am quite a lot. I'm not the first person that's suggested water pipelines around here in SoCal. My idea was massive desalination plants powered with nuclear power. Waiting for climate change to turn around is not going to cut it, and nobody is doing fuck nor shit about anything that yields results. Failboat around the clock. Curbing wasteful water usage slows the bleeding if even for a tiny bit. California is so pretty and can be rad so it's a damn shame nobody will step up and do something ... I dunno, practical.

You think this place is extremist, you ain't seen nothin'
Calling for people to die / be killed etc. is pretty extremist. People think the Internet gives them anonymity, it doesn't. I doubt Future Publishing Ltd endorses the calling for people to die and be killed on their property. This forum section could get shut down so fast and it's perplexing to me how it has yet to be. I was compelled enough to report an incident here, like, just last week. It happens with greater frequency than it should.

You really need to start a thread and provide evidence. In my observation actual threats have been dealt with pretty quick, but this topic should be it's own thread, not derailing this one.

This place is an epic wasteland. I actually am surprised it hasn't become a liability issue for the company that owns Anandtech, there's a shit ton of extremist stuff in P&N -- which, typically points the finger at extremists on the other side of the road!

You know the place is rowdy when Democrats aren't safe from Democrats. It's typical to have your ass ran up a flagpole if you're a Republican but holy shit even Democrats are getting persecuted these days.

This forum used to be pretty balanced back in the day. I'm not sure what happened. I think when Anand sold out is when things changed for the worse. But that said, I can't even visit the site unless I have an ad-blocker because ads and other nonsense take over the page, I'm sure that also contributes to the epic wasteland. Doesn't matter. The forum/site will likely be done in the next few years if not sooner.

I mean you should see what their President Trump said, he literally sicced his supporters who were having fun with a gallows onto Congress. What do you think they would have done if they got their hands on AOC or Pelosi or even pence. You moron the entire Republican party is a bunch of violent pieces of shit.

Not to mention Trump wanted to kill border crossers from the south, And during the BLM protests in DC he asked if they could at least shoot the protestors in the legs. Who's doing most of the domestic terrorism in this country btw?

So seriously, fuck off

You're one of the extremists, I wouldn't exactly trust your opinion on when things were balanced.

SE TX.

So desalination runs about 3.8kwh-10kwh per 1000 gallons. A large nuclear reactors can run at around 1GW (some larger - some smaller) and cost about $5.4B ($5.4k per kw) while taking 5-7 years to build.

Nuclear reactors cost about $31 /MWH to operate. So $270M year.

Let assume break even at 20 years with water flowing in year 7.

Total cost (ignoring price of the desalination plant)

~$9B

At 5kwh per 1000gallons it would be able to desalinate 1.75T gallons a year or 4.8B gallons a day. (For comparison the largest desalination plant in CA does 50M gallons a day - 95% less than what we are talking about.)

Here’s where the estimate gets tough. That large 50M G/day plant cost $1B. To hit 4.8B G/day requires 96 times the amount a single plant can do. So $96B +$9B = $105B in constuction costs and power generation costs over 20 years. But we are still missing desalination operating costs.

The plant above runs about $2300/acre-ft of water. Convert that and it would cost $161B over years 7-20 to produce those 1.75T gallons/ year.

So a rough estimate would be:
7 years to construct our nuclear power plant and desalination plants

Construction costs of $100B over the first 7 years with total costs of $170B by year 20 to break even (this assumes the construction costs of the of the desal plants is captured in that $2300/acre-ft number other wise add another $96B to the total) resulting in a cost of:
$.0075 per gallon

For comparison CA averages about $.004 per gallon currently.

CA uses in the neighborhood of 14T gallons a year so this would offset 12.5% of the water used.

There’s probably efficiencies that could be done to maybe lower the totals. I leave it to you to judge whether this is a practical approach to water management.

Oh, but I don't WANT this place to go under. I've been here since I was a teenager, this is one of my virtual homes. I'm passionate about AT. Sometimes I might vanish for years at a time but IRL calms down and I return. Now I have kids telling me to fuck off and that I'm a moron etc lol, I guess they're clamoring for participation awards or something. You just have to ignore them though, not worth the time. I can appreciate hazings by the likes of iwvshane for example but as soon as you're cursed at it shows what level you are on and what level they are on. I talk like a sailor on the Internet and in real life, but I don't even address an enemy with fuck off etc., it's unimaginative and cheap. I would just like for this place to be cleaned up, I did extend myself and reach out in trying to get that done, but here we are.

I'll take my leave from the thread as brycejones was correct this is derailing (and FYI pushed that info through proper channels.) I had my say of water concerns, here and there.

Carry on. :)

There used to be more open racism and such so maybe that was more balanced for him. Most of them eventually got banned as they slowly said more and more racist shit, even then I kind of enjoyed seeing people like spidery07 get made fun of, things were a bit more interesting at least.

I always enjoyed spidery07 post because he would inevitably open his mouth and insert his foot. seems he could not help embarrassing himself.

I'd be interested to know what you base this opinion on, or perhaps what special dictionary you are using for the definition of "extremist".

I see some dipshits, maybe a few obvious bigots, but...extremists? I must be missing those posts, or using the wrong dictionary.

It's probably extremist shit like healthcare for all and not forcing 10 year olds to risk their lives in child birth having rape babies.

The rules are in a sticky at the top of the page, and apparently have been revised without updating the sticky. I don't much care as anyone that can't communicate without personal insults goes on the ignore list. Act like a rude child, get treated like a rude child.
My hunch is that the worst offenders are those that feel empowered by the ammoniums nature of forums, the internet tough guy is alive and well.

People who can't communicate without constant disingenuous bullshit don't deserve actual discussion and debate. If you want to waste others' time, and if you want to argue in bad faith, you get treated like the shitball that you choose to be.

Ignore the people who call you out on your dipshittery, that's obviously your prerogative. But don't act like it isn't because of the idiocy you post. And by idiocy, I'm not talking about simple topic disagreements or differing stances. I'm talking about how you lie and misrepresent damn near everything you jump into in P&N.

Keep playing the victim, snowflake.

By balanced you mean if someone posts a picture of a red circle but some say it’s green in order to maintain balance others need to just say green?

Interesting article detailing how Jackson got to this point and it’s been building since the 70s

Meanwhile what did the Governor get done this year?

Anti CRT
Making abortion illegal

The so called pro life Governor didn’t do shit for the Jackson residents
