The only thing not funny about this thread are those poor bastards without water. Democrats pointing a finger at Republicans regarding water is pot calling a kettle black. From Flint Michigan to California where I am no Democrat has any business pointing a finger about this one ... it makes you look uninformed, at best. Making light of the issue in general when there's a humanitarian crisis is lacking and there's no amount of excuses nor justification to make it any less so, such as my joke to HomerJS. I own that, I doubt many here will own theirs.

Ivwshane,

I completely disagree with you. Showing sympathy for the death of someone close does ease mental anguish for some.

Stop with this insane nonsensical crap of accusing me of being a Republican. I'm a Dem, but one who simply refuses to pick up a torch and carry a pitchfork with some of the furious.

And I saw your post as I writing mine, Zor Prime. Lambasting Republicans for this is cheap when people are dying.

I've said it for decades, that state needs to go. Sure the price of shrimp will skyrocket and college football will suffer, but I'm ok with these ramifications.

I honestly believe the USA should split, with the original Confederacy being joined by many of the western states. There are fundamental differences in how to govern, why force the two sides together? Abortion just being one issue. Call the new country "Jesusland", let it form it's theocracy without pesky interference from the other half of the old USA.

I'd need to move, as I'm in a purplish island in the rube sea of Florida but I'm good with that. As things stand, you won't be able to get home insurance soon here, many companies have already left the state. I won't miss the (growing) heat and (increasingly stronger) hurricanes ether, just some of the people.

And yes there are many who can't move that might want to. I'm sure the blue states could sponsor some help for that, and Jesusland would applaud and maybe kick in some too--they do have money after all-- as it gets them closer to their white Christian paradise from 1955 if the brownies leave.

What about flint Michigan and California? Put up or shut up. Show us a direct line of complete democrat control in those states that clearly show a self created humanitarian crisis such as this.

IronWing,

I've been quite consistent. I am just not what you call a Socialist or a Progressive. And I refuse to personally attack people, call them names, attempt to strip them of their humanity and such.

I thought this forum was different.

But be as it may: I'm a Biden fan.

For some? Who? I can throw out generalities too but it doesn’t make it true.

As far as I’m aware I’ve never accused you of being a Republican so I’m not sure what your rant is about as I couldn’t care less about your party affiliation.

But just so you can feel better about yourself, I offer my thoughts and prayers to those suffering. If you have a ribbon or some bumper sticker you’d like me to wear I can, it’s the least I can do./eyeroll

I was not accusing you, ivwshane. I'm just flabbergasted because I've authored defenses of Biden.

Began eschewing political and social bumper stickers in 2012. I read about too many cars being scratched, dabbed with paint and, hammered over political choices.

Journalists are supposed to be even-handed unless they've cleared not to be so. But I was not all the time in my classroom.

Hasn't Jackson been under a Democrat mayor since the 1940's? The current Democrat Mayor in office 5 years? Maybe I'm not grasping how this is a specific party issue?

The people who will suffer the most in Mississippi are not the ones in power. Whites comprise 55.3% of the state's population. Blacks make up 36.4%.

I know the leadership of Mississippi is conservative and as some say, backwards. The capital of Jackson, Miss., is 80% Black. If you don't have a car or someone to help your family, what chance does one have?
The right is blaming the city of Jackson where 25% of it's people live in poverty for not funding the entire nut for replacing their water system.

MS ranks 48th in infrastructure yet you claim it is a Jackson problem? Also 25% of Jackson residents live below the poverty level. Think they have that kind of money?

Yeah, moreover, any attempt to blame democrats for the water shortage out west is laughable. That shortage is caused by climate change, which republicans have consistently opposed taking any action to prevent.

So far as this case in Mississippi, the city of Jackson is run by democrats, while the state is run by republicans. We'd have to take a closer look at whose incompetence is responsible for the problem before laying any blame.

As homerjs pointed out, the solution costs more than the city can handle. When a city can’t provide for its citizens then the state should step in. This isn’t s problem that suddenly popped up or one that the city of Jackson has been downplaying, it’s an ongoing issue and it looks pretty obvious to outsiders why it hasn’t been fixed.

It’s just another example of a red stare waiting for the federal government to step in and fix the problem and once again it’ll be the federal government that does just that.

So looking back at the Mississippi state legislative session for 2022 the state government passed three bills affecting drinking water:

2 for grants to fund rural drinking water projects and 1 to use COVID funds to provide grants for water projects statewide.

None of those seem to be quick response actions to improve the reliability of Jackson’s water supply.

It’s not clear to me what level of government was aware of the potential issues with the water system but state government definitely did not do anything during the 2022 legislative session.

The rich continue to get richer, the poor get poorer. The pandemic was a boon to the ultra-rich. Hell even Mississippi has two billionaires apparently. I'm sure the tax "reform" during Trump's first term helped those poor 1% out when they really needed it.

It doesn't take a genius to see that this trend has an end somewhere. Personally I think it ends with walled compounds and private armies for those who can afford it. That's already happening in various places around the world and we aren't far behind.

I pointed out to someone MS passed tax cuts at the expense of allocating money to fix Jackson's water system. Answer they gave "tax cuts were passed to help poor people fight inflation"

I just facepalmed

That does not surprise me. The lack of sympathy is appalling. But this is everywhere
It's an opportunity to offer "prof" that democrat control is superior to republican. Clearly the idea is that this wouldn't have happened under democrat control.

I've spent a fair bit of time studying the state as it's on my short list of retirement locations. They have some serious issues in some areas as do most states.

I’m willing to bet every state on your list is a ‘Red’ State...for tax reasons of course...

I think taking a shot at Republicans for this is not only crass, but maybe an example of an individual's lack of compassion.

No one is asking anyone to do what actor Sean Penn did in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. No one is demanding anyone donate money. The precursor was torrential rains which caused rivers to overflow.

And innocent people are losing their lives, homes and possessions. Some people enjoy being cruel to others.

Yes, a look at the state's budget for clean water, clean air and disaster preparation is sobering. But I doubt anyone hangs for it.
