Housing costs in CA are high largely due to Republicans voting for Prop 13 and boomers preventing the needed new construction for the past 30 years.

The state legislature is slowly but steadily addressing the second part of that at least.

Red states that are seeing a lot of growth are moving to cap property taxes now too so they're about to almost precisely replicate the same mistakes.

The "why" doesn't really even enter into my point in that post but completely agreed otherwise.

Attacking a person because they choose to retire in a place that has a lower cost of living then their current residence makes one look like a boob. (even if the person they attacked does have "unpopular around here" opinions like @Greenman)

It works better if folks stick to making points that MAKE SENSE. ;)

And you as well! :p ;)

If I really "missed the point" please do feel free to enlighten me? (I could have sworn you were just being a dick lol)

You DO come across as a bit of "agitator" for lack of a better term sometimes.

You think I give a shit what you think about me?. I really don't. Mississippi has the problems it does because as a state they refuse to pay to actually provide a decent quality of life for their residents and hope the federal government (who they love to hate on) picks up the tab. The South operates on low pay and hate. Fuck all of it.

Okay ROTFL.... you really are a typical P&N clown aren't you? :p

I USED to care about your opinion until the girly-man attempt at insulting me above..... you'll need to do better than that Francis.

How about you try defending that STUPID statement about retiring to a less expensive state making a person "fvcking selfish" ?? (I think we both KNOW the answer to that question!)

Well now that we've settled nothing. Have you looked into the decades of deliberate disinvestment by the state of Mississippi in its own capital that laid the foundation for this disaster?

Who the fvck are you even arguing with? :p ;)

I completely agree. (and THAT was my secondary point.... save the nonsense for folks actually ON the other side of the argument)

Also... and seriously.... lighten up Francis! :)

To be fair I've jumped down people's throats a few times when it was uncalled for after hanging in P&N for awhile then heading back to OT but not first "adjusting" my 'tude! (it can happen to anyone... this forum is fully capable of bringing out the worst of us)

I’m retired and still live in a highly taxed Blue state, I stay for the benefits the taxes I pay provide.

Well let's see, man. There only need be majority control but you know that. Every second of every day the ground beneath my feet, or ass, what have you, is literally sinking. We're averaging, roughly, around an inch per year or so. Policy around here with water is insane throwing away water on things that aren't essential. We'd rather wash state and city cars than give water to farmers. We'd rather have businesses water meaningless lawns than to ensure there isn't crop failure. People with means are bailing because the writing is on the wall, California is running out of water and millions upon millions of people are going to be flat-fucked. Thank goodness my base of operations isn't within CA or I'd be looking on how to get out of here. California is poised for one of the largest humanitarian disasters the world has ever known and it's teetering on edge. The state has lost people for two consecutive years in a row, prior to last year it had never lost population. The seams have cracked, the place has been on the road to hell for a long time and it has accelerated and I'm just talking about water alone. You know what's up with Flint MI and what party traditionally controls it and CA, one thing I believe is that you're not stupid and I doubt you're ignorant or will you prove me wrong.

Lol and unlike Mississippi, Californian politicians have been trying to address all those problems. Thanks for making my point even stronger. Democrats try to solve problems, republicans don’t. Had Mississippi politicians attempted to pass legislation to address this issue (an issue that was brought to their attention in 2016 after the flint incident) we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

Funny but I can't seem to recall ANYTHING even close to this wide-spread happening in any of the New England states.

Sure you'll see the occasional "boil-water" warning usually due to a water-main break but they normally only last hours to at most a couple days in extreme cases.

Mississippi's State Government is a bad joke and just like in Texas I have exactly ZERO sympathy for any adult living in that $hithole who voted Republican..... they made their bed have fun lying in it.

(and better hope the local grocery is stocked up on Poland Spring!)

I watched a docu-series called Wastewater on Paramount+, one of the episodes was in Mt. Vernon, NY. Apparently they are having sewer collapses and sewage backup all around the city due to failing clay pipes. Seems like they are scrambling to bandaid it all, with no money or time to actually fix it.

Perhaps a portion of the ginormous military budget could be used for instrustructure. How's that F35 doing so far, only 398 billion dollars spent, give or take a few billion. I guess that would be "unamerican" to want to get a little more for our money than boondoggle toys for boys.

Or perhaps we could roll back that tax "reform" pushed through during Trump's administration along with rollbacks to every environmental protection he could get his hands on. Especially anything done by the brown man in the office before him. Look up the list of congresspeople at that time and how much that "reform" benefitted each of them. All while Paul Ryan trots out his story of how it helped some lady pay for her netflix bill, Senators suddenly were saving millions of dollars...nice work if you can get it.

There is money to be had. There just has to be the will to redistribute it. The people with it are sure happy with the status quo. It isn't their water going bad, and if one of their mansions gets damaged by strong storms, no biggie.

And when was the "infrastructure" in Mt Vernon NY (founded in 1664) built again? (I'm going with a LONG time ago)

And Jackson MS? 1821. That's 157 years difference.... Mt Vernon had running water before Jackson even existed.

Further the ancient plumbing/sewers in Mt Vernon NY even with those issues are still working if a bit poorly.... those folks still have drinkable water coming out of their taps and can crap indoors without using a bucket.

It's not the same thing at all.

EDIT: I still have Paramount + for the moment and will check out that documentary re: Mt Vernon.

This place is an epic wasteland. I actually am surprised it hasn't become a liability issue for the company that owns Anandtech, there's a shit ton of extremist stuff in P&N -- which, typically points the finger at extremists on the other side of the road!

You know the place is rowdy when Democrats aren't safe from Democrats. It's typical to have your ass ran up a flagpole if you're a Republican but holy shit even Democrats are getting persecuted these days.

A bit of an exaggeration but I agree in principle.

Too often in this forum people viscously attack anyone who doesn't completely agree and "toe the line" so to speak... it cheapens the entire forum.

And since MANY posters are actually "sensitive" and have "feelings" (/s) that results in some of them getting bent out of shape!

If everyone simply embraced "IDGAF" as a personal philosophy as I have things would run FAR more smoothly!

;)

It's almost like there's some kind of infrastructure problem in this country that could use some addressing...

Man, if only Mississippi didn’t have to rely solely on the federal government when democrats hold a big enough majority to passing meaningful legislation.

Of the states that the debt cancellation could be taxed, NY State announced it would not tax the debt forgiveness. Mississippi is the first one to state they will indeed tax the debt forgiveness.

Far as I know Connecticut will be following NY in this.

This is true! Also true the mayor of Flint was a Democrat, typically it is a Democrat.

This is true! But it doesn't help the water problem is exacerbated by fuck it let's ignore it and continue to use water as normal, because lawns need watered, so on and so forth. There are millions of state and city automobiles that don't NEED washed and even when you're using recycled water there's evaporation to take into account and it gets ever-living hot-as-fuck here, evaporation is a legit issue. You can hose down a sidewalk and it'll evaporate in about 10 minutes since it's hot and it's a rare day there's clouds in the sky.

There are so many things that California could do, but you know, perhaps an insect or something might become extinct, or swap crops. The two best reliefs I would propose are build a water pipeline from the Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio or all of the above and work something out. Or build a nuclear plant to power some massive desalination plants. None of this will happen to get some semblance of immediate relief, instead we'll pitch climate change and hope we're making a meaningful impact while things die of thirst.

It really pisses you off when you're here and you can drive around and somewhat regularly see water running out into the middle of the road and sidewalks as the ground beneath you is sinking.

I believe it's said this is "based" if I pretend to be a youngster.
The commonly cited number is 80% of water usage goes to agriculture. Even if we pretend banning car washes and lawn watering could save 25% that’s still 25% of the 20% going to urban/residential use so 5% overall.

But since there’s agricultural profits to be made you are just going to have be a little thirsty.

Or you can move here. Sometimes we go 3 months without rain, sometimes we get a foot and half in 2 hours. Sometimes we have boil notices because hurricanes or freezes have screwed up the water system.

And how much water-waste and runoff-pollution are the rich folks golf courses responsible for again?

Food-production may be the number-one usage BUT its food production so NOT a "waste" an essential. (although more efficient crops would certainly help!)

To me that seems a bit higher priority then hitting a little white ball around. (also that's racist! /s)

For Tucson, the number is 1500 gal/golfer/round. Most of the ag water use is for growing cattle feed in the desert, followed by growing subsidized cotton in the desert.
