As I've said, the story has its problems - however it is in tone with the universe following Alien and Aliens.... A:R, however is pretty much: "what if Jerry Lewis directed an Alien film..."
It's not just the story, it's also the "tone." This is on a planet full of prisoners? Monks? Men with a specific genetic mutation? All of the above? "A WOMAN! WE CAN'T HAVE A WOMAN HERE!"
There's simply no question that, between
A3 and
A:R, the "tone" of
A3 is
far more removed from the first two movies.
At least
A:R was in space. At least it had aliens learning and demonstrating intelligence. At least the aliens revealed ever-changing traits and skills, just like the first
Alien movie kept viewers frightened from scene to scene by barely showing the creature, and changing the appearance drastically each time (egg > face-hugger > chest-burster > adult). Like the crew of the Nostromo, the viewer never knows what to expect.
Hmm,
A:R had a
lot more going for it compared to
A3.
