I'm not sure how I feel about it so far, besides the graphics being great

I started on the "I want a challenge" difficulty but some of the enemies were just ridiculous imo. Even when I bumped it down to normal some of those rift challenges don't seem feasible for where I am currently. He's supposed to be a god, right? It seems like a choice between button mashing and tedious evading

The gameplay is my biggest issue so far. Some of it plays like Uncharted where it seems like the path of the game is too forced and mechanical, and some parts are too ambiguous and unclear. There are places where I want to explore, but I end up going one way without a way to go back. Do I really have to wait for a second play through? I just got to the part where you go to a new realm and things are even more confusing now. The balance between progression and exploring is not good, imo. And the story....eh

It's a good game, maybe a great one, but how much people are praising it seems overboard for me
I'm at the same exact part as you - last night I got to the new realm and after crossed the bridge turned it off.

Where did you get stuck without having a way to go back in the first/starting realm? I can't recall anything like that. Sure there was stuff you can't unlock yet, but I'm confident that later on you can go back to unlock stuff and open chests you couldn't previously.

I think you can go back in that bridge room and travel to the previous realm. But not sure what there is to do there as I didn't see any side quests except for realms I can't access yet.

You haven’t unlocked the abilities to explore most of the parts you probably want to yet. Keep going. Also they made it pretty clear from the beginning that the combat would be very different from previous games.

A few things will happen as you play more. First you will get more abilities that allow access to blocked areas you could not reach before. Second you will be able to explore the world more freely as you unlock realms. Third you will get a lot more experience points to unlock new moves and also materials to upgrade weapons and armor. You want to be a god you have to upgrade your stuff, trust me it will get better and you will have more combat options almost too many options. Fourth you will eventually gain the ability to more or less fast travel so back tracking won’t be as tedious.

One example was when you get to the big water area. Once the water goes back down I wanted to go back to the previous cave area which contained areas I didn't seem to be able to get to previously. Maybe I missed it, but I couldn't find a way back that way. Maybe it's blocked for now.

I guess I just need to look forward to what cmdrdredd says is ahead

I need to get this game. Reviews so far are awesome and it just looks fantastic. The only real decision for me is whether to play it on the standard ps4 with the 120" screen at 1080P and 7.2 surround or on the PS4 Pro and 55" 4k screen with high end stereo sound. I might have to do both!

PS4 pro for sure on 4k. Installed a firecuda 2tb sshd and now when I die I don't load anymore.

Go to the statue of Thor, take the boat between his legs, literally. The cave is there

That's another thing they should really tell you (or another thing that I missed them telling me)

My impatience is probably not helping

You learn about this once you get there. An NPC tells you about them and gives you ability to use these arrows. Won't tell you how or why because I don't want to spoil it but beforehand you are in for a fun fight 🙂

Yea all the areas you cant access early in the game you get the ability to later. through a single skill or a combo of skills you learned. Some people bitch about "backtracking" but this is literally the same way nearly all open world RPGs work. Same as Zelda/metroid/TR/HZD/whatever

Cleared all the valls + queen
Fully upgraded both weps
still need to grind Niflheim and muspelheim for armor upgrades, buyt im basically done unless i wanna get all the artifacts and crows for platinum

you can get to about 9.5 if you socket everything with lvl 7 enhancements

SO having played around with the combat more I feel like the stance change skill is pretty worthless. Most of the time you don't have time to be pausing after an attack in order for it to activate. The move set is cool but it leaves you open to get pummeled quickly. I'd rather be dodging or attacking. Unless I'm doing something wrong.

I'm fighting one of they Valkyrie that you find once you get the chisel that can open the magically sealed doors. Don't think I'm ready for this fight yet but I have had her health go down near half way. I'm debating continuing on instead and coming back later. But I may forget and don't want to miss anything.

I beat her easily but I kind of grinded for upgraded gear before I reached that point. The key is to dodge properly and counter but don't get greedy. Slow and steady does it.

Yea I gave up for now and contined the story. I'll try and get better gear and upgrades. Perhaps the blades of chaos will do a better job.

I almost had her but for some reason kratos is so clunky and sometimes when I would try to evade or block he wouldn't..he would just get stuck or stunned quickly. I'll probably go back and try again once I get better upgrades to my weapons.

Some of the valkryies later on are so cheap it's unfair. Unblockable moves and you can't see them when they swoop in and often even if you dodge they still catch you and take so much of your health. Doesn't help that they spam these moves all the time, like it's the only moveset they have. Seriously...screw that headache lol

Yea fighting her reminded me of fighting that one spider lady in Nioh. My goodness that took forever. I do like having the blades a lot more. Brought back some nostalgia when I got them.

click R3 to lock onto them. it makes dodging the air attacks SOOO much easier
and then its just memorizing the patterns, as some of the do 2x the air attacks where others do 1

the queen is even worse, she literally has 4x the health of the normal ones and can use the abilities of all 8 of them

So I finished the story and Kratos' story and character development is excellent as is Atreus' except
when Atreus learns he is a god and turns from inquisitive child to an arrogant a-hole in less than a minute with no development of that point. Just suddenly being a dick...was poorly done. Also Freya and Baldur were bland. Baldur had zero development and Freya goes from protector of all and a friend to being all "I'll kill you and rain down fire upon you etc" when you save her life by killing one dimensional boring Baldur who would have killed her and came for Kratos anyway. She just ended up being a stupid character in the end. Again poorly done...both of them. So while overall it's a good story, many characters are just shit. I was also disappointed that we didn't get more god fights. I would have liked to face Thor and/or Odin, even to a stalemate of some kind. I didn't expect Baldur to be the big bad in the entire storyline. Gameplay and Combat are an easy 9/10 for me and taking the story only based on Kratos' development with Atreus it's a 10/10 but the antagonist is so bad...I am highly disappointed there.
.

I've not really done anything in Nifilheim or Mephilheim yet. Probably put that off until a later time. The combat is lots of fun but I'm burned out after marathoning the game since 7AM (it's now 1:30AM here).

also Dwarves are awesome

that is one area the game really excels, keeping you playing for long periods at a time. it's a bit silly and obvious that everything you accomplish just leads to a new task or goal (I just reached the summit of the mountain. surprise!) but the pace and length of quests combined with a constant goal makes it hard to put down the controller

I think I'm close to the end. There are a few level 5 skills I need to unlock for the blades. There is a point I think which is where I'm at right now where it takes a while to get back to the lake of nine. I did most of the side quests except for defeating the valkyrie. Once I'm done I may play it again on the easier difficulty so I can explore some more.

I'm having a good time playing this game. I got used to the mechanics finally. Only problem is I have played HZD so many times I keep trying to utilize that control scheme. Even tho its a "railed" game for the most part I find the somewhat openness of the game fine. The kid is becoming a whining brat but whatever. I try to do all the secondary puzzles as I com across them to avoid a massive second play through.
