I'm glad I went with the default difficulty, I almost went with the 3rd one. I've died quite a bit already, I would probably be frustrated had I done the harder difficulty.

Does anyone know if there is anyway to "un engage" enemies? Like this big boss, it's forcing me to focus on him and locks onto him so I can't like run away or turn the camera angle until I'm far enough away. it's kind of annoying when I'm trying to run and grab health orbs but can't get there fast enough or see the exact direction I have to go.
To unlock from an enemy I think you click the left thumbstick. Or it could be the right one, try either of those. I usually never lock on to enemies anymore. I too took the normal difficulty and restarted the game today because last night I realized I missed some of those health apples and some other treasures.

You're gonna have a blast. I played some more today then took a nap after the gym so I could play it again before going out tonight. I haven't even opened up the areas fully.

enjoying to so far

Yep, went with the challenging difficulty and I'm getting pretty wrecked but it'll force me to get better with my attacks.

there's a setting in the options that enables auto focus assist I think; other than that it's just the R3 button AFAIK

Such an incredible game so far and I’m barely a few hours in. I really like that blacksmith’s vulgar humor. It was a bit unexpected but really makes me laugh. The combat is really well done and I like how Kratos moves like a big guy and feels powerful. The graphics...I mean what can I say just wow. Playing it on a PS4 Pro and LG B7A OLED TV in HDR is just amazing. The atmosphere, the music, the sound effects...I don’t think I can think of one complaint. There seems to be just enough areas off the beaten path to find chests in to keep things interesting as well.

Yup I feel the same. Haven't played a game this interesting in such a long time. I don't think I've enjoyed something as much as the last of us and this is filling the gap. The blacksmith brothers are hilarious and I keep trying to find all the treasures even though I can't access most of them. Still need to make it to the top of the mountain. So I've barely scarstched the surface of the areas. It's just so much fun to play but I do forget a lot of the combos. I'm getting better and it takes time to get used to it.

Tried to game in 1080p mode and on my 4k tv the difference wasn't that bad, some far away items look duller but close up detail is about similar. Movement felt the same to me so I switched it back to 4k mode.

I like experimenting with combos. Start with heavy attack, knock enemy in air, two light attacks and juggle him, throw axe, then punch enemy, then retrieve axe(which also does some damage). You can put together some nice ones and if you are lucky finish it off with a stun attack that is pretty brutal looking. Once I start unlocking more skills it will be lots of fun playing around with possible combos.

I also like how you can direct Atreus to shoot arrows at enemies which distracts them. A lot of combat potential.

Do you have to unlock these combos? There's a lot of upgrades and I'm running out of xp points. Once I'm free to travel wherever I want within the world I'll take more time to look at my upgrades. Once you make it to the top of the mountain, are you allowed to go where you want or is there still an objective you have to go towards? Doesn't feel very linear but I've just been following the main quest from point to point. It's a bit confusing as to when you can actually go an do the side stuff for more experience/lore.

I kinda miss the longer and faster ranged blade combat but I am getting used to the somewhat clunkier and focused fighting.

When do I get to unlock some upgrades?

As you go through the main quest, you will gain xp points and get the ability to upgrade your weapons. By the time you meet the first blacksmith guy, Brok, you should be able to upgrade your axe with one or two runes. When you meet his brother a little later, but still in the beginning of the game, you have more available upgrades for your axe and your son's bow. Then I noticed you can find upgrades in the relative area after defeating certain enemies. But you need xp to upgrade so continue with the main quest until everything is opened up for you to travel about. I'm still not there yet but I think I am close to the top of that mountain.

I'm playing on Pro @ 1080p on 'performance' mode. Looks fantastic, even blown up to 120".
According to Digital Foundry, who I trust more than regular gaming outlets when it comes to this type of stuff, performing mode is not preferable for this game because of the variable unlocked framerate. You do get a boost in framerate but it's not stable which makes it actually worse to play than the locked 30 you get with the resolution option. That's how I play.

The one I mentioned is available from the start. You just have to use the right combination and string it together.

I heard there are some frame pacing issues when you use unlocked frame rate. Did they mention that? Not sure if that’s what they meant on the forum post I read.

Freakin love this game so far! And I'm getting much better at the combat now too. On this harder difficulty every encounter seems like a real fight and it's a lot of fun when you really earn the kills.

That heavy cleave attack is really helping me out.

I realized that and at first you are missing some items like the decoder and other abilities to explore some of the closed off areas, like the witches cave. Got a bit further now and the game difficulty is picking up. But it's gradual as you meet new enemies and they are all pretty cool to fight. This game is a great example of a nicely packed single player game. I think they got the linear part of it done correctly. It's open enough that you can explore but also just enough to keep you engaged in progressing the story. I've also heard it's about 25-30 hours which is rare these days for a single player game.

What the hell am I supposed to do for the chest puzzle near Brok's brother's workshop? I gotta spin the stupid things, and one is shrouded by poison fog, but they don't control single symbols. I was probably just tired around midnight last night but I refuse to progress until I open that damn chest lol.

Also, I hate Revenants

You have to match each symbol on the chest to one of the totems by throwing the axe at it to spin it around. The one with the poison you throw the axe to spin the symbol then recall the axe and throw it at the thing that spits the poison so you can see what symbol it is. Just match up the symbols to the ones on the chest. They are not in order and if I remember right, one has two correct symbols but if you choose the wrong one you won’t be able to find the correct one on another because it has only one correct symbol.

Revenants are easy. Keep distance, have Atreus shoot it so it materializes, sprint up and smash it a few times, dodge away again and repeat. You can’t do continuous combos on them, just a few hits then back off.

Both of those

also if you do bare fists you can just get the stunned and then do the insta kill

Anyone else really impressed with how quickly this game loads? I'm on a launch console with 2TB HDD upgrade and it gets me into the game in under a minute. Compared to HZD which took up to 3 minutes on my console. SMS really puts a lot of R&D into their game engines but this is by far the fastest-loading exclusive that I've played on PS4 this far.

To be fair horizon is loading a much larger world with no load times between zones (not the cauldrons for the override upgrades). Though yes it loads very quickly.

I'd like to get a 2tb hd to replace the 1tb one I put in there. Off topic but which one did you go with? The game loads much quicker for sure, especially when you die a lot it doesn't feel like you are stuck there waiting.

I think it's the Seagate ST2000LM007 7mm drive. I'd opt for an SSHD now though since they're so cheap. Though I'm quite positive that 7mm is required, super easy to swap out though.

HZD was definitely a lot to load but God of War is extremely dense too. I'm guessing that with a totally open world though like Horizon that the engine has quite the task of populating the world with all of those machines and human NPCs; not to mention all of the loot and seemingly endless supply of resources.

Nice so if I'm going from a 1tb to 2tb I have the option to save my saved games at least on a USB..I'm guessing. I also debated just getting an external and letting that stay connected. I'd have no use for the current hd that's in there now.
