I know a number of people in New England that haave smashed a 17" wheel on the awful potholes in the area.
A taller sidewall 235/75R15 passenger car tire sustained no damage at any speed, he added.
...personally I'd go with 17" wheels since it still looks good and give you enough sidewall that if you do hit a pothole, you'll be less likely to crack your new wheels.
