the tallest buildings rankings are BS anyway. Sears Tower should still be #2 (behind Taipei 101 only). They count the spires on top of Petronas as part of the building, which finish higher than the ceiling of the Sears Tower. The Sears ceiling (actual non-ornamental usable space) is higher than the ceiling(s) of Petronas. The antennas on Sears are also higher than the spires on Petronas. But since the spires are considered part of Petronas' structure, albiet ornamental hogwash, and Sears' antennas are separate entities...Sears gets the shaft :(

Same thing with Freedom Tower. Isn't it supposed to be ~60% spire? No matter...once Caltrava's spire gets built, Chicago will be on top again (although, it may sitll be smaller than the Burj-not sure)

They should build a spire on top of the Sears Tower... It's kind of an ugly building anyway. While they're at it, maybe they should rename it to KMart Holdings Plaza :)

O RLY?

Frank Lloyd Wright designed a mile high building. I believe it also went 1/3 of a mile into the ground for the foundation. It was pretty much a self contained city

Yeah, it also had plans for atomic powered elevators as well... as if a mile high building wasn't good enough of a terrorist target on it's own :)

Because it's not classified as a building? Free Standing Structure, yes, building, no.

Dubai is a much easier place to build compared to Taipei. At least you don't have to worry about earthquakes.

Man, the environmental system on these things and the modeling of it has got to be a giant headache.

True...I believe Sears moved out of the building several years ago anyway.....

Yes, and like all muslim structures, it will be built with nothing but sand and dirty bombs.

Im pretty sure it will have 40 + elevators so no one will be taking the stairs. Elevators will be super fast just like the CN Tower, or faster. It won't collapse, but if it does then I hope they catch it on video.

Double tallness not found?

And to think, that still costs $100 million less than the new Yankee Stadium.

cheap arab labour for the win :p

Most of the labor is probably heavily abused & mistreated immigrant labor from Asia.

Thats pretty much almost everywhere in asia. Who do you think works labor jobs in Singapore, Malaysia, China.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has four criteria for the tallest building in the world:
- Architectural top (spires count, antennas do not) - Taipei 101
- Highest occupied floor - Taipei 101
- Roof height - Taipei 101
- Pinnacle height (including antennas and anything else they want to stick out the top of the building) - Sears Tower

Unrelated to your post, but the CN Tower is not considered a building because its primary purpose is as a communication tower and it only has a few floors.

That would be awesome and suck at the same time.

That was the original concept for the John Hancock building in Chicago.

I have tremendous respect for Dubai engineers and the vision of the people in control there.

They've built:

The Palm Islands
The World Islands
The Burj-Al-Arab

And plenty more.

These are the good guys, folks. I've been there and its a nice place.

dubai rocks, i will holiday there one day. theyre crazy!

they have that rally driver dude with all the cool cars... CLK GTR with a one off tuned AMG engine (he asked for more power...AMG gave him it!), modified F40, jag Xj220....etc the dudes got all the best cars evar!

they are also planning an F1 ciruit.... which is perfect, F1 is a rich sport and deserves a rich race!

i think some arab family owns 5% of ferrari and actually have their names on the F1 cars this year, also they plan to build a ferrari world! lol! amazing.

you gotta hand it too them, they have great vision and the money to do it.

The sad part is it was our moeny that we gave them for oil. At least Dubai understands that the oil will run out and they are building a new source of revenue in tourism.

I dunno about you, but I find that oil pretty useful.

Anyways, that building looks pretty killer. Im guessing they need to seal and pressurize the top floors?

Can you imagine a brand new Airbus A380 filled with fuel for a flight to NYC from Dubai hitting that building!! Anything that big would surely be a huge target

What distance is required to reach terminal velocity? Maybe they could let the elevators freefall for a minute to save on energy and time.

And then the brakes fail. OMG BEST RIDE EVER! Until you hit the bottom anyway.

Na, I imagine the elevator shafts being air tight, so as they near the bottom, the pressure builds up and gradually slows the elevator until the brakes can safely engage at which time a vent is opened to release pressure from the shaft and normal progress is resumed.

I'm telling you, the cost savings would add up and people would get their daily dose of amusement park fun several times a day!!!

well they wouldnt just have one big elevator shaft would they

they'd probably have a few smaller shafts, means you gotta get out and get another lift, much like the WTC buildings.

look at the shape as well, http://www.burjdubaiskyscraper.com/

its got loads of different levels so, multile shafts stacked up is probably what they'd do, providing they are going with traditional cable operated lifts. a single lift that went 216 floors lol, the steel cables would weigh a freaking ton!

Actually, a single lift that went 216 floors, with cables that only weighed "a freaking ton" would be an absolute miracle of strength to weight ratio.

;)

This isn't "top of Mt. Everest" high. But, they might have to add an extra egg, one extra tablespoon of flour per cup in the recipe, and cut the baking soda by about 25% - if they're baking a cake on the top 3 or 4 floors.

Sometimes I get vertigo in really high buildings; as cool as I think this building is going to be I don't think I could ever bring myself to go that high and look out the window . . . as if I could ever afford the chance to do so.

Poll?

And to answer your question; no!
