Who else thinks that the super skyscraper that they are building in Dubai will collapse once it's finished?

Parachutes should be included at all windows.

Taipei 101's elevator took ~38 seconds to get me up to the observatino deck.

In comparison, my old apartment (built in Aug 2004) took me 36 seconds to get from ground floor to the roof (6th floor).

Pretty cool huh?

I have tremendous respect for Dubai engineers and the vision of the people in control there.

They've built:

The Palm Islands
The World Islands
The Burj-Al-Arab

And plenty more.

These are the good guys, folks. I've been there and its a nice place.
The architects are American.

And the engineers are?
I don't know. But in a lot of the construction photos you can see large GE signs.

GE probably had a hand in the construction/engineering aspect. I don't think they do a lot of in-house architecture.

Towers? Get your double vision checked out, there's only one, and it's all ours. You should know this living in Illinois, but then again you probably went to or are still in our fine public schools.

I wonder the same thing...seems like some group of whackos will think of it as a great place to park a couple of 757's...or worse, since this is so close to that Terrorist Hotbed...Iraq...

I think the Freedumb Tower might be higher on the priority list for terrorists? Just a thought.

The Petronas Towers (located in Malaysia, which is 50% Muslim, and nearby Indonesia which is the largest Muslim country in the world) hasn't had any 70th floor plane landings since its inception.

OMG! I think I discovered the terrorist's pattern guys! First they bombed the World Trade Center (which is in America), and then they slammed two planes into the World Trade Center (which again, was in America). And now Iraq (which has 150,000 American soldiers and another 100,000 American contractors) is now a hotbed for terrorist activity.

The common thread? They hate freedum!

Was that really necessary? Of course I know that there is only one tower. I didn't realize that I had made it plural. Oh, and BTW, who the fvck are you?

ANYWHERE, ANY TIME! Keep your eyes peeled! Beware of tall buildings and taxi drivers!

Saddam's Scuba Assasins, lol

I'm amazed by the fact that its concrete for the first 140 floors or so, the bigt american skyscrapers are all steel frame which seems like it would be much much lighter than concrete. Dunno what Petronas and Taipei 101 are though.

What distance is required to reach terminal velocity? Maybe they could let the elevators freefall for a minute to save on energy and time.

And then the brakes fail. OMG BEST RIDE EVER! Until you hit the bottom anyway.

Na, I imagine the elevator shafts being air tight, so as they near the bottom, the pressure builds up and gradually slows the elevator until the brakes can safely engage at which time a vent is opened to release pressure from the shaft and normal progress is resumed.

I'm telling you, the cost savings would add up and people would get their daily dose of amusement park fun several times a day!!!

well they wouldnt just have one big elevator shaft would they

they'd probably have a few smaller shafts, means you gotta get out and get another lift, much like the WTC buildings.

look at the shape as well, http://www.burjdubaiskyscraper.com/

its got loads of different levels so, multile shafts stacked up is probably what they'd do, providing they are going with traditional cable operated lifts. a single lift that went 216 floors lol, the steel cables would weigh a freaking ton!

they have that rally driver dude with all the cool cars... CLK GTR with a one off tuned AMG engine (he asked for more power...AMG gave him it!), modified F40, jag Xj220....etc the dudes got all the best cars evar!

they are also planning an F1 ciruit.... which is perfect, F1 is a rich sport and deserves a rich race!

i think some arab family owns 5% of ferrari and actually have their names on the F1 cars this year, also they plan to build a ferrari world! lol! amazing.

They don't build things like that unless they know they won't collapse. Don't be weird. They are engineered by people who know what they are doing.

Fat chance. The upper-class of the Dubai population (lower-class won't be able to afford living in it) earn more than most ATOT members. Far too expensive as employees.

The sad part is it was our moeny that we gave them for oil. At least Dubai understands that the oil will run out and they are building a new source of revenue in tourism.
