Who else thinks that the super skyscraper that they are building in Dubai will collapse once it's finished?

I saw some show on Discovery channel that showed the beginning 30-40 floors or so. They mentioned that the building is going to be constructed so that it will always be the tallest in the world. They are going to be able to add floors onto it as the need arises. Imagine you are a sheikh and spent 50 mill on a 250th floor penthouse and now you are going to have some damn kids jumping up and down on their floor all night.

Peace

1 strategically-placed bomb will take that out. You know some stupid terrorist will perceive a plight against "Allah" and take that place down. I'm not stepping foot in it (but then again, I'm not getting near that thing... those people over there are CRAZY!

yes but if it's tall enough it will just orbit rather than being supported from the ground :D

Terrorism is non-existent in Dubai.

It's all about keeping your population in control.

And having plenty of easy American targets next door in Iraq.

What the hell planet do you live on? On this one terrorism is everywhere.

Na, I imagine the elevator shafts being air tight, so as they near the bottom, the pressure builds up and gradually slows the elevator until the brakes can safely engage at which time a vent is opened to release pressure from the shaft and normal progress is resumed.

I'm telling you, the cost savings would add up and people would get their daily dose of amusement park fun several times a day!!!

That would be awesome and suck at the same time.

Just like Iraq was an al-Qaeda breeding ground before the war, eh? Saddam kept his people under his thumb and had no issues with terrorism (he didn't want the competition).

Please show us how prevalent terrorism is in Dubai? Pretty please?

There are lots of mega-tall buildings all across the world. How many have been attacked by terrorists?

OTOH, Dubai is friendly to the 'West' and not a strict Islamic country. Islamic terrorists just may crash an Airbus A380 into the building for those reasons if they're stupid. (Stupid because such an act would provoke a backlash)

That is the correct question to ask. It's more likely it will collapse in a terrorist attack than an engineering failure.

Although, it would be extremely difficult to fell it with a terrorist attack...

As of 3/6/07, it's at 390m, already taller than the Empire State Building. And the site says:

A 960m tall skyscraper is being planned for Seoul, South Korea. The tower is going to have 220 storeys if it gets built

just think of all those north korean artillery shells...

lol that is pretty risky/silly of SK...

It really seems like a lot of these super-skyscrapers are getting close to the old SimCity arcologies, with the exception of the potential for self-sustainability. I expect to see a real one within my lifetime.

They need to build an earthquake resistant arco in Los Angeles. I'm getting sick of my 5 miles 1 hour commute.

Senseless, really. But just like momma always told me... It's your money... spend it however you want, just don't air your regrets to me about your dumb choices.

Should an absolute revolution in travel occur, Dubai will wipe vegas off the map.

I'd be their slave for a month of my life just for a helocopter tour of the city.

Were you born monumentally stupid or did you lose a bet and have to make a fool of yourself for today? Who cares how prevalent terrorism is in Dubai. It wasn't prevalent in the USA either, but I seem to recall a couple of tall buildings getting knocked down? Terrorists can strike anywhere at any time Skippy, that's the whole point of terrorism. If they keep to their own neighborhoods they're not much of a threat.

I've come to a conclusion, you can't fake stupid that easily just by losing a bet. You truly are stupid enough to believe that the building is safe just because it's in Dubai. Do the gene pool a favor, DON'T REPRODUCE.
