Originally posted by: RossMANCorrect. First you need to register a domain, I highly recommend NameCheap.com for only $8.88/yr which offers a solid service.

One note about Name Cheap, they are NOT an ICANN Accredited registrar. They are a domain name reseller. This means that if they want to they can take your domain name and never give it back. (I'm not saying that they will I'm just stating that it's something they can do since they are not bound by ICANN regulations.)

A list of accredited registrars can be found here:
http://www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html

Name Cheap is a reseller of ENOM.com. Enom is a pretty famous registrar since they currently have a lawsuit going against them for Domain name slamming through one of their resellers known as Domain Registry of America. Do a lookup on ICANN history or the BBB website about Enom and Domain Registry of America/Canada/Europe and see the complaints from various customers.

I would recommend Go Daddy since they are an Accredited registrar and are directly responsable to ICANN for any complaints that you have with your domain name (within reason that is. 😛 )

Haha! True. 🙂

Just putting out a warning for people who wanted to get with Name Cheap. I've worked as a web designer and a system administrator for a few different ISPs before the dot com burst and one thing I learned is to never work through domain name resellers. Hosting resellers are not inherantly evil for the most part. But 90% of domain name resellers are scams waiting to happen (the 90% that I've delt with at least 😛 )

Desturel - Thanks for the warning about NameCheap.com, I haven't had a problem with them and haven't heard of any but that's good info to know.

I've had the chance to work with most of the major registrars on one level or another. The ISP I worked for was linked to a major routing company in the Baltimore/Washington area so I got to hear many different complaints about many different registrars and resellers. That's the only reason why I brought up the warning. If you've been using name cheap for a least a year with no problems then most likely they are fine.

A quick tip for anyone looking to register domain names and isn't exactly sure wether they are a reseller or accredited, just look at the whois information. For example Network Solutions/Verisign. If you do a whois lookup on networksolutions.com you will see the line:
Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com

When you do a lookup on Enom.com you will see:
Registrar: ENOM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.enom.com
Referral URL: http://www.enom.com

And GoDaddy.com gives you:
Registrar: GO DADDY SOFTWARE, INC.
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com

On the other hand namecheap.com gives you:
Registrar: ENOM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.enom.com
Referral URL: http://www.enom.com

And domainnameregistry.com gives you:
Registrar: BULKREGISTER.COM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.bulkregister.com
Referral URL: http://www.bulkregister.com

If they are an accredited registrar, they will likely list themselves as Registrar instead of listing some other company as registrar. Many times going through resellers is cheaper than going to a registrar directly since they get large discounts on the volume of domains they register. The big problem comes in when something happens with the global database. Such as the recent transfer of all .ORG domain names from Verisign Global Registry to the Public Interest Registry. A reseller most likely won't have any information about the transfer unless they keep updated on notices sent from the main registrar. Thus they won't be able to update the customer when they are wondering why their domain name isn't resolving properly. Then there are the times when you have to transfer your domain name to another registrar. Or if you are a person who regularly need to make DNS updates to their site. Working through resellers always slows that process down.

I think the registrar that handles resellers the best is Tucows/Opensrs. Looking over their reseller policy shows that they allow clients of resellers to log in directly to the Tucows database which is a great help for many users. Stay away from Melbourne IT or Network Solutions unless you HAVE to get a domain from them. They are more expensive than they need to be (especially in the case of NetSol which is directly linked to Verisign and the Global Registry. They should be the cheapest but are instead one of the more expensive.)

I have many other domain name tips, but I'm sure that most of the people here wouldn't care. 🙂

Domain names are a once a year thing after all.

I'm not sure about making a new thread, but I give a few more more pointers.

Here is a list of some of the major Top Level Domain (TLD) Registry's. Registry's are the world database for all domain names. You don't buy domain names from most registry's Registrars do.

.com/.net domain names are all controlled by Verisign Global Registry Services.
.org domain names use to be controlled by Verisign, but are now controlled by Public Interest Registry
.biz domains are controlled by Neulevel
.us domains are controlled by Neustar. Neustar also controls the .com.cn domain name.
.info is controlled by Afilias
.la domain names were controlled by http://www.la/ however they were sued by the country of Laos. Since Laos owns the international country code of .la and Los Angeles was illegally using their countries TLD, all .la domains were placed on hold. That means that if you have a .la domain name, after it expires you won't be able to get it back. You also can't update any of the information on .la domains until dispute is settled.

What's the point of giving this information? Well if you do a normal whois lookup on a linux box, you won't be able to lookup the information for any of the domain names except for .com and .net since all of the other TLDs are controlled companies that aren't Verisign. Since Verisign/Netsol use to be the only registrar all whois programs were originally made to only look at the Netsol database for names and not any others.

It's easy to get the whois information from most of these sites. Just go to whois.us, whois.biz, whois.info and so on. Or you can use the Internic whois lookup located at http://www.internic.net/whois.html. There are also other websites for using whois, but Internic is pretty convenient.

Another thing about domain name registrars is that most times you get what you pay for. Go Daddy for example is very no frills. Their customer support department is a bit light because they run a streamline operation in order to keep their prices down. This means that most of the support you get is limited in hours or automated. For people who HAVE to speak to a real person Go Daddy isn't your registrar. Network Solutions is almost completely automated now. Even when you do speak to the live operators, they have a response form that they need to follow so no matter how upset you are you'll get the same answer as everyone else. I understand why that is though since Netsol is the largest registrar. Register.com and Melbourne IT aren't much better. Bulk Register deals with business accounts so most likely if you aren't a business and you are calling you, they will just refer you back to the business you originally bought your domain name from. This causes problems for people who buy cheap webhosting and the domain name is included free. Many times the domain name is from Bulk Register. Why does that matter? Say you've changed web hosting to a different place for whatever reason and you want to update your DNS servers to point to the new host. You have to contact your old hosting company since Bulk Register won't deal with you. Then if you contact your old hosting company they may not change the DNS services for you unless you pay some outrageous price. It's not a fun process. I could go over the good and bad points of all of the major registrars, but I think the listed ones are the ones I've heard complaints about the most.

Next tip, if you are going to transfer your domain name to a different registrar for what ever reason, do so at least two months before the domain name expires. Again I'm going to my favorite example, Network Solutions. There is (or was I'm not sure if it's still in place) a policy with Network Solutions to deny any domain name transfers that attempt to take place 14 days before the domain expires. So you would need to renew your domain with Network Solutions then pay the transfer fee to which ever registrar you are transferring to. Domain transfers do NOT happen instantaneously. They can take up to two weeks depending on certain circumstances. This is not the fault if your current registrar or your new registrar so getting angry about it won't get your domain transferred. Also be away that transferred domains are placed on lock by many registrars for upto two weeks. So if you are about to transfer your domain name, make sure to update the DNS BEFORE you send your domain out. If you don't you will be stuck without a domain name for two weeks until the name comes off of lock.

New domain names cannot be transferred to other registrars for 60 days. So if you Buy a domain at ... say joker.com and want to transfer the domain to godaddy you have to wait 60 days. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is for some people. An example of why it would matter:
Register your domain name at Cheap Names for one year at $8.88 and then transfer your domain to Go Daddy for $6.95. When you transfer your domain name to Go Daddy you get a year extension. The other way to do it would be pay $8.95 for one year a Go Daddy and then renew it for another year at $8.95. You are saving a whole $2 by transferring instead of renewing. But some people don't want to wait that 60 days to transfer it.

There is a new regulation for expired domain names. Before when a domain was expired or deleted, you could reorder the domain immediately with a new company. In an effor to stop cyber squaters ICANN (or InterNIC I'm not sure) has made it so that deleted domains are held for 30 days at the Registry before they are deleted. Where this becomes a problem is when people delete domains by accident. Then domain name is placed on hold on the registry level. if peopel want their domain name restored, they will need to pay the registrar to restore the domain which can cost anywhere from $100 to $200 dollars (depending on the registrar). This is because InterNIC charges for restoring domain names from Registry hold. The way to tell if a domain has been deleted and is on Registry hold is by looking at Status line of the whois for the domain. If the domain status says: REDEMPTIONPERIOD, this means the domain has been deleted and you need to pay to restore it. This is different from the status: REGISTRAR-HOLD or REGISTRAR-LOCK. Registrar Hold means that you haven't payed your domain name bill in time, but it has not been deleted from the registrars servers yet. Lock could be for a number or reasons including a domain dispute or if the domain was just transferred (I explained transfer lock before).

That is most of the things I can think of for now. There are may other things that happen with domain names, but I can't think of them right now. 🙂

hey rossman-

I eMailed your about registering a wrong domain with ripplehost... I eMailed and PM'ed you my icq & aim.
Let me know when is a convenient time for you.

I signed up for ripplehost a few weeks ago and have a problem.
Maybe someone can give me an idea on how to correct?

I had another Hosting service I was using and changed to ripplehost.
I decided to deversify and start with a main page (and a whole new domaine name through godaddy)and have all my smaller businesses as sub-domains.
I set them up on ripplehost through the control panel function under sub-domain and can view the pages.

My question is...
How do I get my old website to be redirected to the corresponding sub domain at ripplehost.
How does the old site know where to go?

I currently use Network Solutions and went in and changed the server info to...
server1.ripplehost.com
server2.ripplehost.com

it still does not work.

What am I doing wrong??

hEELLLPPPP !!!!

Jesse

You have to contact Ripplehost for them to add an entry into their nameserver. If you want, you can always signup with MyDomain.com (free) and use their redirector service...

I've called godaddy several times, I got a person within a minute every time And godaddy offers 24/7 support.

and I just now PM'd you back.

AddAction.net is definitely the best hosting option right now especially since they recently DOUBLED the bandwidth from 5GB/mo to 10GB/mo, w00t!

Any recommendations for this _today_?

Also, looking for a FAQ on exactly how I should setup the different options when I do take the plunge.

boggsie - TODAY AddAction.net is still the best deal if you want quality, it's not the cheapest but it is the best.

What do you mean by a FAQ for different options? FTP, e-mail, PHP, MySQL, Perl, webmail, forums, chat, file manager, web site stats can all be accessed and managed via your custom cPanel control panel. Are there particular functions you're wondering about?

Does RippleHost offer JSP support (via Tomcat or something like that)? If not, can anyone offer some advice on a host that offers JSP support?

Thanks beforehand!!!

I've been using www.8-95.com for my hosting (at $3.95 / month) and I've been very happy, I've been with them for 6 months now. This weekend one of the servers had a hardware failure and it was fixed within the day. (With a new server I believe)

You are correct on both accounts.

Also just an FYI dahthorn.com will begin accepting new customers soon but the new server is likely to SELL OUT FAST.

dathorn.com's reseller accounts are AWESOME, everyone knows what a resellers account, WHM and cPanel are right?

Using the setup guide on gottadeal.com i managed to get everything done and am waiting for the nameservers to update.

Once curious note, when updating the nameservers, there are five fields. I pasted in the two nameservers from the AddAction welcome message into the first two of the five fields at NameCheap. But when the page updates, the first field is accepted, but the second field reverts to the original nameserver, while the third field updates to the nameserver that I had pasted into the second field blank. As long as the two nameservers are in the list of five, I should be OK, right?

You'll know soom.

FWIW, I pointed NameCheap to ns1.addaction25.com and ns2... a while back, but had to re-do a change several times this weekend. S/W glitch. Keep trying.

That shouldn't be happening, wait until Wednesday morning and go back to NameCheap.com, login, modify your name servers, make sure to select CUSTOM NAME SERVERS from the drop down list, copy/paste in order the first ns and then the second ns into the second box ... the other 3 should be blank then click update/save.

Let me know what happens tomorrow morning when you attempt this.

Do you still believe that AddAction is the best deal around? I saw another thread about e-rice.net. Trying to set up a small business web site for a cousin - traffic will be viewing pages (3-4), occasional e-mail and possible download/viewing of 10 page report? No good grasp of what kind of bandwith/month that equates to. I don't want to underestimate because I don't him to be charged if there is an overage. I'm willing to recommend the extra $5/year over Ripplehost to be conservative 🙂. TIA for any help.

PS - I'm assuming that AddAction is reputable and will be around in a year.

In today's economy there are sure things, so AddAction could go out of business next month, I'd be really pissed for sure and a lot of AT'ers would also.

However they have been offering webhosting for over 2 1/2 years, have actual professional tech support staff who man their help desk 24/7 and their servers are fast, reliable and best of all CHEAP.

So yes AddAction is still the best deal. 500MB/10GB, custom bluetrix cPanel with auto installers (which e-rice.net does not offer), and a very nice affiliate program. Refer 10 people, your webhosting is FREE FOR LIFE!

I went back this AM and this time, I put in the two addaction nameservers in the first two fields and I removed the namecheap servers from the other three fields, leaving them blank. When I clicked update it worked as expected.

Thanks again, RossMAN
