Hey I got burned by cyberwings, but once again if you are only going to loose $5 then why not give it a shot. You never know. I may even try it out.

I got burned by CyberWings also because of my own stupid greed and ignorance. However as Luden pointed out Alan also runs SplashHost.com which is an established and respected webhosting company.

CEO Shawn J White still owes me my $29.50 !!!

Here's another great webhosting deal but I'm not sure about this company as they aren't as established as SplashHost/RippleHost is. I tried searching WHT for hostingmountain.com and found ZERO posts so I dunno if they're good, bad or what not.

Anyhow the deal can be found here I posted some questions in that thread, let's see how quickly they responded and with what answers.

HostingMountain.com is offering 1 month and get 5 months for free. I have a friend who wants to put up a small forum and this plan would be perfect for her. Considering it would only cost $4.95 for the first month and the next 5 are free that's a pretty decent deal if they're still around in 6 months, so that's the gamble you're taking.

If you're an HTML n00b like myself you'll appreciate their Site Studio which is pretty cool.

$4.95 for 6 months gets you:
  • 200MB of web space
  • 3GB/mo bandwidth
  • Web servers using RedHat Linux operating system
  • Advanced H-Sphere control panel to administer your domain
  • Easy to use Site Studio website creation tool
  • FrontPage Extensions
  • Scripting Support: CGI, PHP, SSI
  • Unlimited Mailboxes with Auto-responders, Aliasing, Forwarding, Catch All Mailbox and Mailing Lists
  • Access mail via Web Mail or POP3
  • Unlimited domains (yourdomain.com) and sub domains (subdomain.yourdomain.com) with domain aliasing support
  • Unlimited Third level domains (yoursite.hostingmountain.com)
  • Unlimited MySQL databases and users
  • FTP and SSH access
  • osCommerce shopping cart
  • Web Statistics (with Webalizer and Modlogan)
  • SSL Support (An IP Address is Required for SSL, See Add-on Services below)
  • Automatic Daily Backups*
  • Apache logs: Transfer log, Referrer log, Agent log, and Error Log
  • Virtual and Anonymous FTP with sub FTP account support
  • MIME Types Management
  • Custom Error Pages
  • Pre-installed CGI Scripts (guestbook, chat, forum and counter)
  • Free Search engine submission
  • Free Script installation
  • And a lot more!

As a general precaution, do this only if the host you're going with has a reliable track record. If their server goes down for an extended time, you'll be without e-mail, and e-mails sent to you will be bounced back.

Good point and overall I prefer Yahoo's e-mail software which rivals Horde, NeoMail and Squirrel Mail ... the only other web based e-mail software which can rival Yahoo/Hotmail is HiveMail but that costs $$$

So, naturally, I signed up Sunday @ Ripple and today @ Hosting Mountain. Thanks, but could you ease up a just little bit with these killer deals RossMan?

ROTFLMAO

Are you kidding me? Sounds like we have the same strain of virus. Oh well if any friends including AT'ers need something hosted, I'm your man.

Already I'm hosting about 500MB worth of PHP tutorials for my own benefit and that of others.

I haven't signed up for HostingMountain.com yet, if you have signed up what do you think of the H Sphere control panel? Would you mind changing your password, letting me logon and play around if I promise not to break anything?

Thanks for the research, RossMAN. I don't know which of these two deals to choose. I'm a cheap SOB, so naturally the $5 annual plan sounds better. ;)

EDIT:
Will they temporarily disable your host once the "subscription" period has ended, or do they automatically try to renew by charging your CC?

Done.

But no can do at the moment since I'm waiting on verification (ancient corporate gold card, yet) in order to gain access:

Thank you for signing up with Hosting Mountain. We'll be able to complete your account set-up as soon as we have verified your credit card info.

You should go into profile and turn your PM's on (I turned mine off because I was getting bombarded with PMs)

Expect a mini review of HostingMountain.com in roughly 2 hours first gotta watch "The Shield", eat dinner then play around.

Do you mind if I upload a small file so we can test the d/l speeds?

I hate when that happens. PM is ON.

As long as she is over 18, I don't. But the engines canna take it Cap'm since I didn't change the separate FTP p/w.

Many thanks to sundog29 who let me play around with his new HostingMountain.com account and turned on his profile, you can change your password back, thank you.

Well here's my mini review.

HostingMountain.com is GREAT if you need the total package, I know that billing your clients (if you're reselling webspace) is built in, and even tech support. I liked some of the skins and even some of the info was easy to read.

However I still prefer cPanel (RippleHost) over H Sphere (HostingMountain).

The big question is what kind of download speeds you're getting, reliability, uptime, tech support (if you need it) and will they be around in 1 year? I wish it were 2004 so I could do a 1 year update but alas my time machine is still in the shop for repairs.

For those of you who have questions about webhosting, most of them can be answered by browsing the WHT forums.

I'm trying to decide which of the 3 hosting plans to choose just for some webspace. I post on a few forums (this and IGN both high traffic) and I would like something with pretty high bandwith.

Has anyone downloaded anything off of any of the 3 sites and tested their speeds? Right now I'm leaning twords hostingmountain.com ... but they only have two employees and are really small time. Like RossMAN said, will they be around to fullfill the year that I will be paying for?

I just signed up for Hosting Mountain and the cheapest (Hosting One) plan.

I was about to sign up for Ripple Host earlier tonight, but I balked because I have to commit to a hosted domain upon ordering.

If you're planning on signing up at Hosting Mountain, you need to do so NOW. Their server's clock is running fast and as of the time of this post, you only have 50 minutes until midnight mountain time.

First time I switched from cPanel to HSphere, I wasn't too thrilled. cPanel seemed a lot easier. But it turned out that HSphere gave much more control over configuring my site, and that cPanel was easier simply because it lacked the featureset that HSphere had. And HSphere felt just as easy to use after I got used to it.

This was over a year ago though, so things have probably changed a bit. I stopped using both of them simply because neither was able to accurately measure bandwidth usage when an on-the-fly compression technology was being used (mod_gzip, php's ob_gzhandler). Instead of measuring how much bandwidth was actually being used, their stats were based on the numbers before compression. This meant I had to pay for about 3x more bandwidth than I was actually using.
