Anyone using dual-wield?

It's COOL, but I can't get over the fact that I can't block (unless it still does it on its own?).

Using two-handed right now just because I'm an HW whore in all games.

Have you tried adding the skills under 1-hand combat?

I've yet DW, i'm going range/sword+shield melee hybrid.

ya I meant the dark brotherhood.

I remember that not only did monsters level with you, but so did some special arms and armor. And you never had a chance to upgrade them. Really damn annoying.
The dark brotherhood outfits were the worst, cuz theres like 10 different levels of them, and the low level versions are basically useless garbage, but by the time you are strong enough to get the high level version, you dont need it.

Fallout 3 was a great deal better by not having that nonsense.

is the leveling system in skyrim the same as other TES games? honestly that's what really killed morrowind/oblivion for me.

This game looks absolutely amazing with NVIDIA Surround. Climbing up on top of mountains and looking out over the panoramic vistas is unreal at times.

That said, the game has broken menus in surround and eyefinity (they're really zoomed in and unusable). Some awesome guys over at Wide Screen Gaming Forum at working on patches to fix it. For the most part they work except that you can't read books in game, which sucks. But for now just being able to actually play the game in surround is awesome.

It still sucks that developers still ignore multi-monitor setups these days. It seems to have become a lot more common over the years.

Btw, you can change the speed of the day & night cycle. Just like you could in Oblivion.

Currently the timescale is set to 20. That means a full day in-game last slightly over 1 hour in real-time. I think that is too fast. You can't get much done, or it's night again.

In the console, type "show timescale" to see the current timescale. Default is 20. To change it, type "set timescale to 6". That will make an in-game day last 4 hours. More manageable, imho. I think this setting is saved in the save-file, not in an ini. So after making a change, save your file, and don't use older save-files.

Thanks for this.

Still getting a LOT of crashes to desktop I'd say one an hour or more. :( Have to constantly save. Anyone else?

Still, it's lots of fun.

Game is so much fun.

Good:
- executions are cool
- weapon enhancements and upgrades = awesome!
- same for armor
- perks really make a difference and are really nice!
- load times from SSD = not really there :D

Bad:
- crashed to desktop 5 times in the last 7 hours - no error or anything
- sometimes textures don't get loaded - stuff is blue then. happened once to the skill constellations, saw some trees like that, armors on people...
- horrible shadows, blocky and distracting

Now the shadows I can live with, but the crashes are really annoying. And they happen anywhere, out of the blue. I may be climbing a hill, want to turn around and bam, back at my desktop. I enter a building - crash. Change weapons - crash. Running the newest Catalysts 11.10 - any idea how to improve that?

Ahh good to see I'm not the only one.

I'm playing at 2560x1600 on a 30" screen. Jelly too? :D

Actually I'm barely getting 30fps right now on high settings. Can't handle Ultra. Still it's enough.

Also textures look even worse on a screen of this size. But the increased level of immersion more than makes up for it IMHO.

Still very early in the game. Just finished the Golden Claw quest and got my first shout word. Also cleared out a local mine.

I wish you could carry more stuff with you. I'm the type of player who would like to take everything that's not nailed down and sell it for gold. The 300 weight limit forces you to be really choosy.

Also anyone else love taking everything they can (without stealing) in each town and selling it back to them? :D I'll even take pots and pans, bread, anything that has any value.

In Oblivion, there was a console command to disable it :p

No crashes yet, but I haven't been playing for extended periods, only like 1-2 hour sessions probably. Tons of little bugs, though, like plates, food and other items falling off/though tables and shelves, there were tons of issues like that in Oblivion as well IIRC. It's a Bethesda game after all.

Nothing game-breaking, though. UI is kind of clunky but I can deal with it. Other than some minor issues like that, am having a blast. About 10 hours in and I feel like I've only scratched the surface, I'm sure between the main quest and all the side quests there are hundreds of hours of gameplay, just like Oblivion and Morrowind think I'll be wasting a lot of time with this. The new things they added like mining, smelting, tanning, smithing, etc. are really cool, cool to build and upgrade weapons and armor and actually have a use for hides, pickaxes, and some of the other items that were available in previous games but had no actual uses.

Anyone know what guilds and factions are in the game? I didn't really want to Google it and maybe run into guides and spoilers, but wanted to get an idea of how much stuff there is to do. Sounds like there's a mages guild/college, and don't think I've heard anything about thieves guild yet but I'd assume it's there. There's the Companions, and is there fighters guild as well or is the Companions supposed to fill that purpose? Sounds like you can choose to join either the Imperial Legion or the Stormcloaks. There's a bard college. Think I read/heard something about the Dark Brotherhood. And are there any factions related to vampires and/or necromancers? Sounds like there's going to be a TON of stuff to do and explore in this game.

I've put a solid 4-5 hours in so far, and I gotta say I love it. I tried getting in to Oblivion like 5 or 6 times over the last few years and I never could get far before the boredom forced me to put it down.

The graphics look great to me (though admittedly I haven't played many recent PC games with really good graphics, like Witcher 2, Crysis, etc), the combat is fun, the skill/level system looks really well done, the voice acting is passable to good, and best of all there seems to be a huge mountain of content available. I have yet to try the magic system, but that may have to wait for a separate play through as I'm really enjoying my hybrid stealth/bow/1h+shield build that I have going at the moment. I am running everything at ultra settings with great fps, and I have not run in to a single bug, glitch, or crash yet. The only strange thing is that when I alt-tab out of the game, the only way I can get back in is to click the Skyrim icon in the task bar which brings up a black screen, then I have to alt-tab and just click in the blackness and the game will come back up. I've done it at least a dozen times and its never caused a problem so I'm not worried about it just yet.

I really dont understand the complaints about the UI. Everything you need to do can be done easily with the mouse or with pre-assigned hotkeys (and most actions can be performed with whichever one you prefer), and all of the menus are simple, logical, and easy to understand. I will admit that the first few times I tried to loot a container I became incredibly frustrated because I couldn't figure out how to close the damn thing, but once I realized you can close pretty much ANYTHING (menu's, containers, books, dialogues, inventory, crafting menu's, shops, etc) with the Tab key (conveniently located right next to your WASD keys), I have been cruising along with no issues.

Ya, after Fallout and Deux Ex - both with experience point related leveling - I'm a bit miffed at Skyrim. Having it all skill-use based kills the incentive to do a lot of quests. It didn't bother me that much in Morrowind or Oblivion, so just a matter of getting use to. Ya, there's still the reputation/faction aspect.

Companions pissing me off. I got one "forced" on me, apparently, and now he's missing. I had to clear out a pretty hard dungeon without him, and left a lot of loot behind due to weight restrictions. Grrrr...
