Water already freaks me out in games, so I don't need slaughterfish underwater that I'm completely defenseless against. Every time I find myself near water I spam the shit out of my detect life spell. The last thing I need is to suddenly get attacked while swimming underwater when I'm already stressing out.

I've seen a couple of spots that I would like to go underwater but didn't because they were surrounded by slaughterfish and I just can't get myself to go in the water if they are there.

What I need is a mod that gets rid of slaughterfish, or at least swaps them with something like that spider->bear mod.

Do you have some sort of fish phobia? Slaughterfish don't actually hurt that much (this is coming from a cloth wearing mage that never uses protective magics). You have more than enough time to get yourself up on land, at which point the situation is reversed. You can kill them, and they can't attack you. Mudcrabs rarely attack you underwater, and when they do you are often mere steps from land.

Really don't know why several people are so upset about not being able to attack underwater. I mean, it makes sense not being able to use weapons while submerged. Go try to throw a punch while swimming - now try unsheathing and swinging even a dagger, much less a large two-handed weapon or a one-handed/shield combo. Considering the types of magic in this game, for the most part spells would be useless as well. Fire? The problems here should be obvious. Ice? You are attempting to shoot a temperature sensitive projectile through water - it won't go anywhere fast, and is going to melt quickly. Lightning? Sure, I suppose you should be able to use this spell underwater, but it should discharge in an aoe effect immediately, centered on you. It will hurt you a hell of a lot more than the slaughterfish heading towards you. You don't want to create lightning underwater.

Where can I store stuff? I'm level 13 and have about 12k gold. Do I need to buy a house? By this time in Oblivion I would have found a place, but I haven't come across any opportunities to snag a hideout lawfully.

Become a thane with a Jarl in one of the major cities and buy a house. I held off on buying a house for a really long time and just stored all my stuff in one of the barrels at the smith shop entering Whiterun until I was about level 25. The only problem was if you accidentally grabbed everything out of the barrel, but that was easily remedied by reloading the autosave when you enter the town.

The whole "your stuff will disappear if you don't visit said zone for a couple days" is invalid. I was out adventuring for 8 gamedays and returned and my stuff was still there (I purposefully tested it to be certain with saves).

I have a video game water phobia, especially around underwater enemies and large hulls.

I hated the mission in San Andreas where you had to swim out to the freighter and climb up the hull. One of my least favorite levels in one of my favorite games.

Don't even get me started on submarines...

When you say video game water phobia, do you mean you don't actually have issues with water in real life? That would be particularly strange, I think.

At any rate, I wonder if it would be possible to mod all the water out of Skyrim (I assume it is/will be - textures to visually remove it, then allow you to use weapons/spells underwater, and remove the swimming effect so you walk like normal)... then you might have flying slaughterfish, but hey, at least they wouldn't be swimming right? :p

As others have said--work with the Jarl and complete main missions for them. The one in Whiterun is rather easy, and story-necessary. I did that rather early on--maybe by level 10 or so? Then you can purchase a house. The one in Whiterun is the only one that I have, though I've only unlocked three other Holds, of which, I think you can't get a house in Winterhold (I became Thane, but the missions are short and easy--though, I did notice that he requested for me to retrieve his helmet, again, after I had finished that quest long ago. :hmm:) and maybe Fealthern, or whatever it's called. I don't see an empty house, anyway.

Or, do what I do. open up console on startup with "~" key, and type "Player.setav carryweight xxxxx" xxxx whatever being the weight that you want to have. ....Problem solved! :D

Honestly, If I had to truck back and forth to unload every time I filled up, I would have ditched the game after 5 or so hours. that has always killed me in these games.

I did notice a floating deer skull out in the hot spring/salt flat area in the south east part of the map. But that was over land...and I don't think it was supposed to be floating. :hmm:

I think i asked this before; but did anyone find all 24 gems to complete the thief quest ? I only managed 18 (level 61; and all other quests done). I hate to use a faq or cheat - just kind of curious if i should have been directed to them all or if i royally goofed somewhere.

That depends. What kind of resources would I need to get immunity to disease, poison, paralysis, fire, ice and thunder?
Seems to me it would be easier to just play the damn game and not waste so much time digging up all the spells and items I'd need.

Heck in Oblivion and Morrowind I didnt even bother with that nonsense. It was much easier to make the items in the Construction Kit and stick them someplace in the game world.

Enchanting is very easy to level up,just loot bodies of low level gear ie items that weigh 1 in weight and loot every gem stone you find, enchant the items when you get back to town and you soon level up,make sure you have soul trap spell as well for filling up the soul gems while exploring and fighting mobs.

It's 100% valid. Skyrim just bumps the cell reset timer up to 30 days, where in OB it was only 3 days.

If you drop your stuff in a container that you don't own and then don't visit that cell for 30 in game days, you WILL lose everything.

Thats such a minor thing I dont think I'll sweat it. I love my Solitude home and visit it frequently to drop off loot. And since they are better about making larger areas, I no longer have to visit each bedroom separately. As soon as I set foot in the door thats the whole cell taken care of.

You didnt goof, you just havent found them.
Use a FAQ, theres no cheating in knowledge. If you open up the console and add 6 gems to your inventory, THATS cheating.

A cell that you own, like a house, doesn't reset the containers. He was talking about just using a random container in a city.

I haven't found all 24 yet either. I kind of like that. I think the nirnroot quest was too easy I found them so fast it was over too quickly.

If you want to easily fill up a bunch of soul gems have Aela the Huntress as a follower (or anyone with a bow) and give them a soul trap bow and a bunch of empty soul gems.

hmm, now I feel like I should have been paying attention to soul-trapping. I've been putting some points into enchanting to compliment my smithing, but neglected soul trapping since early in the game. I still have a very early-on-acquired steal great sword for soul trapping (dinky 3 seconds), so I don't really use it anymore.

Is there an easy way to acquire soul gems, other than random looting from corpses and tables, and purchasing from merchants? I have these soul gem fragments from that sunken castle, though I suspect there is no way to put them together?

What I meant by goof; is that does the other quests lead you to find them or are some of them just not gonna be found unless you check every corner of the skyrim ?

First, it's been in the game for a long time. Exploring underwater environments was a blast in Morrowind and Oblivion. In order to make those environments scary and interesting they had to have enemies, and that meant you had to be able to fight the enemies. Second, it's not that unrealistic. Divers have used knives to discourage or fight off predatory sea life in the real world. Fire and shock spells? Long blades? Yeah, not so realistic... but then this is an RPG with supernatural elements, so I am not so tied to realism. Lastly, it's just one more dimension of the game that has been boiled away to make it more streamlined, I guess, for a new generation. I liked exploring underwater. I liked the fact that the coastal areas out to a certain depth were another extension of the game world, full of dangerous creatures and hidden areas. I'm just sad that didn't make it into Skyrim.

I'm a thane in Whiterun, and nearly so in Solitude. But I am near Whiterun at the moment so I will head over there tonight and see what the deal is.

Yeah but I'm pretty sure I dont own the three barrels in front of my house, and I do use those to store special things, like stolen items I intend to sell later, or crafting junk so I can grab it quick on my way to the blacksmith in town. Even so it doesnt matter, if I go 30 whole days without popping into Solitude, something is seriously wrong.

The Jarl's assistant will allow you to purchase housing, and all the upgrading. The one in Whiterun is a great location--though I wish it had an option of an enchanting table. :\

Anyone find that the Jarl's No.1 (can't remember his name) no longer offer's house upgrades after a while? I'd like to purchase some furnishings for my house in whiterun but he is no longer offering it as an option. Broken quest?

If you hit up the Skyrim Nexus a buttload of people already made some modules which will help you.

i'd like to share with you the joy of playing my type of character build: the Heavy Armor Destruction Mage.

what i did was get 100 Smithing and Enchanting. i made a full set of Dragon Plate and dual-enchanted it with Mana-Regeneration (70% with potion of enchanting) and Fortify Destruction (reduce 27-30% of spell cost with same potion) on helmet, armor, necklace and ring, and now i'm running around like freaking Zeus with dual-cast chain lightning that costs me 11 mana! (for single cast)

research note: i must find a way to not kill my companion Lydia every time i cast chain lightning!

my armor rating is ~350 (heavy armor skill not very high) and +70 HP +health regen on gauntlets, +40% shock and frost resist on boots keep me alive.

next up i'm going to start using more Conjuration for complete epicness! mwahahahaha.
