I didn't realize at first that I needed to shout right at him and knock him back. Later when I had to shout with both words it took me a bit to figure out that I had to hold the key down a bit. At least... I think that's what did it.

One thing that currently has me puzzled... the bullet-time animations that I drop into sometimes when I finish a mob off. Am I triggering those, or are they just candy?

Random eye candy. You can increase the odds by using a power attack while the opponent is low on health, but its not a guarantee.

++++++++++++

I fixed the 2nd thieves bug I had. Exited out, reset computer, went back in, all was fine.
That makes no sense, but I'll be damned if I question it. Got my fence now and am happy. Offloaded about 20k in stolen loot.

Heh, tonight I saw the upgraded version of the bullet-time animation when I finished a dragon off. Won't spoil it for anyone that hasn't seen it yet. Speaking of dragons... they're freaking easy to kill. At least the three I've encountered. I can kill a dragon but a Spriggon or Frost Troll or Hagraven owns me.

Is anyone else looking forward to the editor (supposedly in January)? I can't wait to mod the walking speed up by about 50%.

Last thing before I go back to retrieving old Noster's helmet... I never thought that someone could design a quest interface that would make the Oblivion journal seem like a masterpiece of software engineering. But it happened.

The Post Process Injector caused an immediate Skycrim crash upon launch.

And the "Realistic" Water MOD....is awful....looks like water from a 2001 PC Game.

I'm still having a little trouble with dragons, though I've only faced two after the first main quest dragon. Only one a beat was with the help of a nearby Imperial camp that the dragon also attacked. Couldn't defeat one that refused to land. Main problem is that so much of it is dependent on arrows when they spend so much time flying. I suck at the bow--though I haven't spent any perks on it.

Well, I'm only level 16, so that could be it. Currently focusing on one-handed, blocking, and heavy armor (wanted to go light armor, but the heavy perk tree looks far more useful. maybe that's just me...)

I've never had an issue with the FXAA Injector, are you sure you installed it correctly? Hell, these days I'm running the SKSE (script extender) to launch Skyrim for the FPS mod, which then loads up the ENB Series which then goes about calling the FXAA Injector. Haven't had an issue yet.

There are a number of different water mods, if you don't like that one, use another. There is no lack of water retextures on Skyrim Nexus. Personally I use Pure Waters in combination with Realistic Water (which I don't think you are too fond of). But of course, on top of all of that I do have ENB and FXAA injector mods.

Got everything to work, eventually. Loads of hassle. Need to remember to save once an hour.
Calling it a night. Will grind some more tomorrow.

Good God in heaven the more I fight the more I hate this abortion of an interface. I can't believe they paired such a beautiful, polished piece of work with this clunky nightmare. The whole 'Q' menu thing should be locked in a vault and guarded night and day by dedicated warrior monks to keep it from ever emerging again. I'm torn because I want them to fix it, and yet to fix it is to keep it alive, when it should be tortured to death. I haven't played it on a console, so I don't know if it actually works there, either. But if it does then there is something wrong with the fundamental balance of the universe.

Oh comon, it's really not that bad. I mean, you're not supposed to put every item, spell, or shout in there, just the major stuff you're constantly using. If you're scrolling through tons of things in that menu then chances are you don't need most of it to be in there.

It's pretty bad. The whole interface is a mess, but equipping and managing weapons, spells, powers, and shouts in combat really sucks, imho. I only have five or six weapons and spells in the list now, and it feels a lot less manageable than having eight in the Oblivion icon wheel. Not to mention that hotkeys just don't work consistently. Hopefully they can fix that soon.

Edit: oh, and basically I think you do need pretty much all your common combat spells and weapons in the Q menu, since the alternative is to drill in through the tab menu, which is even more cumbersome.

The only issue I have with the menus is how items and things are "focused" when the mouse isn't hovering over them. This seems to be the biggest issue with the inventory/menus that I have. If they could just make it so that only the item that I am hovering over with my mouse is the one that is focused, then I would be happy with the menus. It's obviously a result of the game being designed for consoles.

It's not the greatest, but I've managed to make it work with little effort on my part. I have all my hotkeys 1-8 assigned and use them constantly. (Unfortunately my primary weapons are dual wielding 1h, but as I've mentioned earlier I've learned to just accept it. Right now since I'm skilling other things it's not as much of a burden.) I only use the quickmenu for swapping dragon shouts and potions.

I guess it's not as big of a deal for me since I've never had a problem with my hotkeys not working. >.<

That's one of the little things that irritates me. It's confusing because the eye says that the items in the pane on the right are associated with the bolded/highlighted item in the list on the left. That has to be a console holdover of some kind. Or it's just stupid.

The mouse buttons. I still don't get this. In the Q menu you click the right button to set the left hand, and the left button to set the right hand. When you have one-handed weaps/spells equipped you click the left button to swing/use the right hand, and the right button to swing/use the left hand. You can swap the assignments for 'M1' and 'M2' in the control settings, and then left == left and right == right. Wonderful. Except now you click the right mouse button to draw your bow. Sigh.

Oh well, awesome game with some rough edges. Not like any of it will keep me from playing six hours again tomorrow. Thank God for vacation. I leave you with the following questions: did they have to use Arnold Schwartzenegger as the model for the male Nord voices? Is Belethor in Whiterun really Brent Spiner?

yes, it's pissing me the hell off. it makes me want to commit murder. seriously--how hard is it to create weapon sets, simply click a button and boom! a weapon set that is actually saved! oh holy fuck!

how about this:
F keys = 4 different weapon sets.

1-8 keys = hotkeys for spells/potions/items.

it's really damn simple. then again, ES has always had this annoying (to me) mechanic where spells have to be equipped to use. that is hyper obnoxious. and really fucks things up.

yes, it is bad. I shouldn't have to access 2 different menus in teh middle of battle to fix every set that I've tried to save--its' a god damn abortion of game design, and quite shameful that it exists at this release level--much less that it has failed to be fixed in a a patch. Is there not one designer on this staff that doesn't realize how broken it is?

more recently--I now have 2 skyforged steel swords. I want to dual equip them--can't do that. not a chance. only one weapon (meaning--identical name and damage) can be equipped at a time. I can't assign one of them to a hotkey with shield because they are stacked, and it completely refused to recognize this now. holy fucking hell.

and no--it's not about the q menu existing, it's that hotkeys aren't saved. If it would actually let me save a dual-wield hotkey, then when switching to a magic hotkey and back, actually keep that set, it would be fine--but it doesn't do that. it unequips weapons and replaces shield or offhand with a fucking spell.

it's fundamentally broken. I'm trying to switch between bow, spell, one-hand/shield, dual wield, and 2 handed in each dragon battle. it's a disaster, because you end up spending half your time re-assigning weapons to your hands on every fucking switch. It shoudl not be that way.I've never experienced a game that fails to do this extremely simple mechanic properly.

I definitely had to swap the mouse buttons. My brain kept saying it was wrong.

I think most of the Nords sound like Vladimir Kulich in The 13th Warrior.

this fuckin game has taken over my life. geezus. its pretty great, in the reviews, explaining how awesome it is to "wander" the country sounds pretty stupid. but its actually pretty awesome. I wasn't sold till I started playing, now im stuck.

on another note, I am playing on a PC with a xbox controller. I am experiencing sometimes strange stutters while walking around. I am not sure if it is the framerate dropping but the game will start jolting around alittle bit and it seems like my guy is walking strange.

or it could be rocklimb or whatever its called?

A holdover from the console roots. Bethesda was too lazy or cheap to make a decent interface for the Windows version.

That would be fine if manually equipping spells and items through the menu werent such a hassle, especially bad cuz theres no way to sort your inventory. Too complicated for the console crowd so they gimped everything.

I have to agree that the journaling for quests is nice. Be warned though that your "miscellaneous" level will eventually be replete with broken quests. I currently have more than half a dozen in there. I wish i could delete them.

If you remap your keys it kills all the "favorite" and "quick menu" stuff. I map movement to asdf, and neither of these "features" has ever worked for me. Total game play changer...

That's Because ES games have dozens of spells. Far too many to hot key all of them.

but not all spells need to be hotkeyed, of course. Just those used most often for battle--going right along with this silly "Q" interface thingy. :\

Two more things that drive me nuts: 1) the tab key doesn't always take you back a level. For example, open quest journal, hover on quest, hit 'm' to show in map, look at map, hit tab, the whole interface closes and you're back in the game.

But my favorite: ever since Morrowind it has been the same key to open and close a container. Hover on book, hit space, look at book, hit space again, done. Now you have to press 'e' to open the book, and tab to close it. Press 'e' again while looking at someone else's book and hey! presto! you're a thief!

Since just about everyone at work is still on vacation, I've had nothing to do this week...

... In other words, I'm hooking up a third monitor to play Skyrim with some Eyefinity goodness. :D

Did anyone complete the thief guild quest - it seems to me the major quest I failed to complete was finding all 24 gems; I only found 18 of them :(
-
I've done everything else - no clue where to find the other 6. Seems kine of lame to use a cheat.
