2. I don't like the continuous, serialized format.

(So far, S1 and S2) There are no breaks, there are no interesting side missions. No interesting mysteries. It's just go go go hurdling towards the monster of the season.

Where are the trippy spacetime anomalies? Time travel? Lost memory mysteries? Unique new alien encounters? Q punking the capt? Even a fun, change of pace holodeck episode?

Star Trek is supposed to be about exploration, new frontiers, new civs... Do some of that. There is no mystery what the next episode(s) will be about.

Leads to missed opportunities for character development too.

Who the F is the robot chick? It's season 2, she's on the bridge, I have no idea WTF you are! I know more about Data's cat than a routine bridge member.
Lots of time spent in wardrobe for a throw away redshirt.
the old star treks had ~25 episodes per season.

discovery and Picard have 10.
wished it was also 25 so they can have a story arc plus some fluff in between those arc episodes.

Yeah, I don't know all the reasons behind it, but I would guess cost for the high production value efforts are a main driver.

You could see that even in TNG. A few lost cost/story building episodes like "Data stays in his quarters and tries to optimize his cat Spot's food replicator recipes and learns a valuable lesson on humanity" before a big space battle/ large cast away team episode.

The current series only values the latter, so only builds a few characters in between the pew pew, and even then it seems only about their cringy love lives.

IDK, otoh, I'm four episodes into 1883 and Peacemaker, and both have done far more character building than Discovery over two seasons.

The series just lacks writing and producing talent to pull it off.

I'll watch Picard, but damn, if the writers were only top shelf like he deserves...

Picard Season 2 turned out to be alright and I'm hoping that SNW will not disappoint either.

Season 2 was better than season 1, but it's still pretty bad. I'm not quite at RLM levels of disdain for it, but close.

I looked forward to Picard when it was first announced, because Patrick Stewart was a great actor that carried much of TNG on his back.

But I forgot, that he was no longer a healthy middle aged, Shakespearean actor with a powerful stage voice. Instead he's now a frail, and wheezy 80+ year old. It almost feels like elder abuse having him working at this. Like an aging boxer that should have hung up the gloves years ago.

So it'd be kind of sad watching this even if the writing was good, but bad writing on top of a feeble Patrick Stewart just makes this an all around sad experience.

I like it a lot, but honestly, it's largely due to nostalgia. Taking it on it's own, without any back history, I doubt I'd bother. I think Stewart does fine. He sounds old cause he is old, and he's playing old. It's a perfect match for the character.

I completely agree about Picard.... if it wasn't for Patrick Stewart I wouldn't watch it especially with the ULTRA-lazy plot of season 2.

It's a sad mish-mash of several old TOS episodes and one of the movies forced together in a process that makes very little sense ESPECIALLY considering how many 10's of THOUSANDS of original sci-fi stories there are out there to potentially adapt!

I hope to see it today. I loved Pike in STD, and can't wait to see what adventures awaits.

Pike leaving Discovery was when it started really "tanking" IMO.

In retrospect I also sorta liked Tilly (yeah I was the one!) ;)

SNW = last chance for me to keep paying $10.99 per month for Paramount+ (no ads) for any Star Trek series.... I hope it turns out to be good too but my expectations are low.

I like Tilly, but thinks she needs more screen time. STD had a few episodes I didn't care for, but I still enjoy the show. I'm going into SNW with an open mind, preying that I won't be disappointed.

Completely agreed.... they REALLY need to get back to the formula that made Star Trek shows so successful in the past.

Seriously TOS can still be compelling even by today's standards despite the complete lack of any decent special effects largely because the list of famous/classic sci-fi writers whose stories and ideas they used for episodes is quite extensive.

Finally convinced myself to wrap up season 2. Relatively boring and predictable script although that whole drone scene was unexpectedly bad

"I have to hardwire the subroutines" Yeah ok. I'd have been happier if they angled a deflector dish to reverse the polarity. And glad to see we're still dealing with tiny wires. I half expected her to debate between cutting the red wire vs the blue wire.

Only thing that was a big surprise was
the random 'major' crisis at the end that turned out to be NBD. "It'll destroy the entire sector!.....With a tiny line of energy that wouldn't bother a solar system and is easily defeated by a handful of ships...."

What is SNW?
Strange New Worlds is the new series that shows the enterprise under captain Pike with Spock as science ofc, Una as first officer, nurse Chapel, and dr M'benga (characters from the original series).

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" ;)

It's a "throwback" to TOS show-concept and is set prior to Captain Pikes accident which left him the cripple we first met in "The Menagerie".

What's going on here? Why are people discussing SNW like it just released? First episode was in May 2022!

This thread dates back to 2019 and not everyone watched from the beginning... in fact MANY people like to wait till the entire series is released so they can watch at their own pace.

Also speaking for myself I'm still at least partially "reserving judgement" until I see some more episodes.

I enjoyed season one thoroughly despite the haters!

Premiere episode was good. Wonder how the rest of the cast get brought into the storyline.
Agreed on both accounts. Only thing that annoyed me was the pump action phaser. The design of everything there, esp the audible out of charge warning was cringe
