So its kinda a sci-fi show that has some people who played roles in Star Trek in it and brought the Borg in for...a cheap attention grab? I waited for that to really matter. And the Romulan Samurai. And...well a fair number of things. And while Star Trek was never completely about the starships at least give us something better than a glorified shuttle craft and two copypasta armadas. And that many ships commanded by a Captain they yoiked from retirement? Uh...ok.
yup.. borg was just to attract us viewers. but it's star trek. no need to go down that gimmick!

the ninja elf dude was useless. you could have removed him completely and it wouldnt have affected anything.

yes capt riker commanding that fleet after being out of picture for so many years.
might as well put Picard in charge of that fleet. same principle.. tactics/tech have all changed since they retired.

also, the Romulans are a broken displaced empire since their sun went supernova and destroyed their homeworld.
how the hell do they have 200+ armada of ships just lying around the borg ship?

After having to force myself to finish ST: D S2, I passed on watching this.

I just watched RLM's reviews instead. The Plinkett review just came out, and it's probably more entertaining than the show:

These shows are so bad. CBS just has no talent to work with apparently. They look expensive and slick, but the actual shows are terrible. Tried watching it with my family who are all Trek fans, and we just ended up making fun of them until it became too embarrassing to keep watching. The second episode of Picard is one of the worst episodes of television I have ever sat through. I'm out, but I still have to keep CBS all access because my fiance loves Blue bloods, Hawaii 5-0 and Melrose Place so I guess CBS wins in the end.

I enjoyed the series very much, which is a rare thing in this "EVERYTHING SUCKS AND YOU'LL NEVER PLEASE ME" culture we live in.

Remember the same people having the same gripes about The Orville.

And about Enterprise before that ... and about Voyager before that ... and about DS9 before that ...

All of those series had their flaws for sure, but overall they were at least watchable.

The worst thing by far about Alex Kurtzman's Trek is the writing, which is consistently terrible. It's just one facepalm after another.

I liked those 3 and still do. Well I though DS9 started a bit slow. But this? Oof. It only feels like Star Trek because they roped the same actors into it and used the same words for things. And the writing is just so very bad

Overall I was pretty happy with Picard and I am excited about another season. Picard is not your typical Star Trek series but still sort of fun.

Come on guys it is star trek all of them have continuity or simple things that don’t make sense. This is supposed to be entertainment.

I'm not that worried about continuity, I just found no fun to be had in either show. They both feel like chores to watch.

I agree about cringe-worthy script moments and although I did like Picard I did not love it by any means. Discovery on the other hand I like a lot despite similar dialogue issues.

My point in bringing the older trio of series up was that each was on the receiving end of a bunch of strident criticism at the time it was released not to imply the newer shows fully measured up to expectations.

What did you like about discovery? It seems even worse to me. is the second season better? Maybe I should just skip the rest of the first season. Does Tilly die? I kept rooting for her to die somehow.

Discovery season 2 started off well.
the mysterious Red Angel (which kinda looks like the God in the Diablo II video game).

then went off the rails when, from left field, it added Skynet trying to take over the universe.
it didnt need to add skynet.
the Red Angel storyline was nowhere near running out of steam.

i like Tilly. She's not a Size 2 eye candy supporting cast member.
it's refreshing.

I'm not worried about what she looks like, I hate her personality. She reminds me of Nelix from Voyager. Another horrible character.

Stopped midway season 1. Maybe I'll catch up with it and Seasons 2 and 3 when they come out.

Lots of ST:TNG fan service, but I don't care. I love TNG.

Series was fun (not perfect) but clearly the writers had no idea how the land the plane for the ending. Lol.

i like it.

engage.

Exactly.

Too many years without any decent Star Trek to watch. Please keep something going.

There is just too much to say why Discovery frustrates me.

Yes, graphics and production value make TNG look so so dated now, but the stories and episodes can't hold a candle to it.

For me, it boils down to a few things.

1. Too much drama. Everything turned up to 11. Trying way too hard every scene. Everything is a razor thin near miss, every relationship is epic conflict, every clock is ticking almost to zero. It just gets predictable and laughable. Kills any fun or real suspense, unsophisticated.

2. I don't like the continuous, serialized format.

(So far, S1 and S2) There are no breaks, there are no interesting side missions. No interesting mysteries. It's just go go go hurdling towards the monster of the season.

Where are the trippy spacetime anomalies? Time travel? Lost memory mysteries? Unique new alien encounters? Q punking the capt? Even a fun, change of pace holodeck episode?

Star Trek is supposed to be about exploration, new frontiers, new civs... Do some of that. There is no mystery what the next episode(s) will be about.

Leads to missed opportunities for character development too.

Who the F is the robot chick? It's season 2, she's on the bridge, I have no idea WTF you are! I know more about Data's cat than a routine bridge member.
Lots of time spent in wardrobe for a throw away redshirt.

Yeah, one thing I liked about 90's Star Trek is that each episode told a unique story. Even if that story was lame, you didn't have to worry about it ruining an entire season.
