I do not think REC'd items work in Port Olisar. By lore, REC'd items are ROMs you plug into your sim pod when you run AC or Star Marine.

However, I've heard talk that they might allow it - for testing reasons.

I've run into a bad bug on 2.1.......Quantrum Driving anywhere results in a permanent blackout. I arrive out of QD, see my destination, and then the screen fades out (like when you black out).....still hear everything going on.....but I never come out of the blackout.

Strange.

I haven't seen that particular bug but I've seen a few people talk about getting stuck in the QD state in 2.1.



Afaik REC items are for AC only.

So none of you own a rental ship?

I rent a Gladiator. Nice ship. Restricted cockpit view. I was able to call it up (it's in the list) and, after fumbling around ( since I never had to get in it manually before) get in and fly it around Port Olisar. This is in 2.0.0 of course since I am citizen #123456789.

REC ships work for me.

I don't have much REC so I never tried renting.
 
I'm likely going to buy in once I get paid on Jan 1.

Would like to just 'gain access' and am not looking to make a large investment.

Are the $45 options ok? Or is there something more wise to get that's worth a few extra coins?

The $45 options are just fine. There are a bit better options at $50 for specialized ships like the Reliant but overall the $45 will give you the ability to do a wide variety of things.

Absolutely. The $45 packages are a great place to start. Everything can be earned in-game once we go live.

Right now the $45 package will get you Star Citizen and Squadron 42 (single player game) when released, 1,000 UEC (in-game credits), and either an Aurora LN or a Mustang Alpha. Both are capable ships. Most say get the LN since it's better armed, but that's primarily because most of what you can do right now involves combat. The Mustangs are more agile and speedier however.

If you get and LN and don't like it...you can easily convert to a Mustang. And if, once you get involved, you see a more expensive ship you like, you can purchase an upgrade to that ship.

If you haven't already, scan through this thread and find one of the referral codes....using it will get you an additional 5,000 UEC when you buy your package.
 
I've got a referral code also if you want mine.

I bought in with an aurora ES, and while it's not good for much right now it'll be better in the full universe. You may want an upgrade later, but they're good packages to start with.

I don't think the Reliant is a game package. The $50 gets you a standalone ship.

This correct.

Also according to this post on Reddit it looks as though none of the Tier 1 (Aurora/Mustang) or Tier 2 (Reliant) starter ships will be coming with Jump drives by default.

"(All) - Will Reliants have a jumpdrive. The current design for any Starter ships, including the Reliant, would be to start them with just a Quantum Drive installed. This drive can absolutely be upgraded with an attachment into a fully capable Jump Drive. It won’t be a massive time-sink or expenditure, but for Starter Ships, it will be one of the first equipment-hurdles you’ll be overcoming in the full universe."


One of the $45 packages is fine. If you like it a lot, you have a good amount of room to upgrade to something nicer for not much more money. If you don't like it atm, you've spent $45 on two games that you may enjoy much more when they are finished.
 
That's interesting info. thanks for posting!

It makes your choice of where to place your hangar (when the 'verse goes live) that much more important.....because you could be "stranded" in that system until you earn the funds for a jump drive.

Just be cautiously optimistic. I joined when they had that $30 starter pack deal when 2.0 was demonstrated. At that point I was somewhat more confident they might be able to pull stuff off.

Guess what I'm saying is it comes down to what they are promising to what they can deliver. Frankly, if they can deliver on 50% of what they are promising the $45 is a bargain for basically two full games.

But at the same time, spend judicially. It's easy to get to wrapped up looking at cool ship pictures and spending cash like a politician at a whore house. They've said again and again that the ships will be able to be earned within game. However, and I would love to have a good discussion about this...they really do have a great track record of breaking promises.

What promises do you think they have broken?

I would say they have a great track record of missing stated delivery targets (i.e. the infamous "Star Marine will be released next Tuesday" statement).

And I know the old-timers continue to say that they have rapidly gotten away from the initial vision. This is my concern. $20 million allows you to build a space sim appealing to a pretty core, defined group of fans who are looking for a pretty defined (hard-core) experience. $100 million allows you to build something with more wide-spread appeal and the core mechanics get 'easier' to appeal/appease that bigger audience.

I think there is some of that going on right now.
 
They're building a game with a scope larger than any other space sim ever made, pushing current game engine tech past its limits.

Sh*ts gonna break and it's going to get delayed.

I don't really care about the delays, as long as they keep expanding the modules and improving the experience. It's obvious they're working very hard on this project and they're not willing to go second-rate anything.

I really don't think people who don't have some fundamental insight into what it takes to develop a game, let alone a game like this, understand the monumental technical and content creation hurdles this project is undertaking. With each release, especially past 2.0, they're proving they can accomplish it.

Yes - you can certainly see some of it creeping in. A certain contingency wants to completely nerf ship mav thruster levels. They want to see "get on his 6" planes-in-space fights like their favorite movie.

I think they listened and went too far in 2.0. The lack of thruster power and the very slow rampdown is making it very hard to outmaneuver fire by any method other than running away at high speed.

The good news is Calix Reneau said he's tightening that up in the next flight balance pass in January, so it doesn't look like they're going to go any further down that path, but perhaps somewhere between 1.3 and 2.0.

I remember when Elite Dangerous first came out I hated the flight model. Over time I learned to appreciate it and while I don't think SC needs to copy it outright, I do think that ships move a little too fast in SC, specifically with stuff like vertical thrusters. IMO ships go up an down a tad too quick, it makes it look like these spaceships have no heft to them. Also I think one thing Elite really got down well was the visual stuff like the throttle. Sure it looks exactly the same for every ship, but you can clearly see your speed, and what level you have the throttle set to. In my Hornet this is not so readily apparent but admittedly I have spent many more hours flying around in Elite than I have SC.
