I'm looking to buy a *RELIABLE* NVME-USB external adapter, that doesn't disconnect randomly, can keep up the close to 1GB/s speed.
So far all adapter's reviews contain frighteningly high % of reports of malfunction, random disconnects, sub-par speeds, falling to even under USB 2.0 speeds, etc.
There are 3 main chipsets in the market: JMicron JMS583, Asmedia ASM2362, and Realtek RTL9210 (no product has surfaced with the latter yet, so no REAL reviews, experiences yet UPDATE: it is on the market already).
Also ASUS has a new product, ROG Strix Arion, but there isn't enough feedback about it yet, and I mean real life feedback not just being able to run a few benchmarks, but real stress test to see if the device (adapter) can keep it up, without disconnecting or slowing down hard.
I would really appreciate any feedback from those who have GOOD experiences during stress-tests, like tons of random 4k writes with a stable speed, cloning 100's of GB-s at a stable high speed close to 1GB/s.
I know SSD's very well, so please stick to the point and don't start to educate me on how their speed falls after some writes, etc. I'm aware and this is NOT the point.
You can help if you can point me to a STABLE and RELIABLE NVMe-USB-C adapter that WORKS as expected.
Thank you in advance!

I have one laptop with a USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port. Neither RTL9210 nor JMS583 work well with him. Constant disconnection, sometimes with damage to disk partitions with any cables. Works only through one cheapest cable. :)

Yes. Or DISK_IPS_THRES = 5.
0x means hexadecimal value. 0x0a equivalent 10.

I don't see any problems.
Thank you.

I'm looking at a new rtl9220 enclosure as well, running at 10gbps for now, with the idea of using it with a 20gbps compatible laptop in a few months. I have already found the firmware for it.

If it runs at 10gbps on my current 10gbp PC usb port, does it produce less heat, roughly the same as a 10gbps rtl9210 enclosure?

Or does it heat more because it is 20gbps, regardless of the usb PC port speed?

Thanks

Perhaps its working as usb 2.0 ? Did you check with the flash tool to see what speed its getting detected as ? By the way.. I am an engineer from PiBOX, the enclosure brand out of India. We do testing of our units. I saw this and thought of exchanging information.

For ther display enclosure - i disected one today and found some simple ic with the name at U3 - 3124 4?J1 that does the job. I wonder what the complex ic's does.

It produces the same heat. 9210 and 9220 does not have a big difference in heat levels. We tested this docks as well. If the docks keep powered on depending in firmware it can keep heating the enclosure even when idle. I have seen this with ASM2464 units quite a lot.

No. Works as USB 3.2 Gen1 (5 Gbps). And this problem most often occurs with AMD processors. I have 5700U and I know someone who has a laptop with 2500U, 5800U and it doesn't work very well there either.

I wonder what the complex ic's does.
This is a cheap DC-DC converter. Which can easily burn out if you install a disk with high power consumption.

Ok thanks, i’m glad they’re similar. I’m going with the 9220 and setting sleep low then.

Thank you.. Then i wonder what the chipset is or a micro controller that helps get the data from RTL9210 to the display drivers.. Perplexity thought it was the IC at U3 that was doing the job of taking data and displaying on the screen which is a 128x64. I am curious what the chipset is and what code it has. Not sure if its out of scope for what we are dealing with here..

I cannot see any display related controller on the RTL side.

Of course  Any case with OLED display SSD1306 directly communicates with RTL9210 via bus I2C. All the images you see on the screen are stored in the firmware. A separate controller is installed with customized displays. You asked where he is:

I have a western Digital nvme 4tb and I may have damaged it.

I was copying a lot of files to test a cheap 9210B-CG enclosure.
When I stopped the copy and the nvme went idle, temp showed that it started raising up gradually until it reached 90C (!!!) so I unplugged it straight away.

I won't be using this enclosure anymore, which appears dodgy.

Any chance the nvme got damaged?
The operating temp is up to 85C.

No problem. SSD drive throttles at high temperatures. What case?
Thanks. https://amzn.eu/d/bVeKNvE
Vention rtl9210B-CG enclosure with latest firmware.

I’m thinking of getting this 20gbps enclosure rtl9220 for the wd nvme, it’ll run at 10gbps on my current pc. It’s not going to draw more power than the 9210 version is it?

I have the same one ORICO on ASM2362. It has very thin and light aluminum. Lots of air inside. And it is necessary to select thermal pads according to height.
Honestly? ORICO and maybe UGREEN has a very high price for such products.
This is not mine but inside it is like this:

what model is your orico enclosure? I would like to get an asm2362 but it's hard to figure it out from the seller's websites. What's the autosleep?

I was going to get the 20gbps just for future proofing since one of my computers already support it, but I don't know if 20gbps requires more power compared to the 10gbps on a 10gbps usb port.

@Stasiz I just ordered the Orico 20gbps M233SV. The 40GBps are still too expensive here, and the exact model you have wasn't available. We'll see what I get soon; it should hopefully come with the ASM chipset but I'm not sure which one. Hopefully, the ASM chipset won't draw more power than the realtek one.

Could you tell me the steps necessary to change the sleep timer using mptools?
I downloaded MPTools.6.6.9.Setup_.rar but I'm not familiar with this tool at all.

Thanks
