cliffnotes:
secret service detain a foreign looking(sikh wearing a turban) student taking pictures on campus
secret service we're given room and board at said campus
the slightist education and background check upon the secret service part would have shown the student to be harmless
after 5 hours(so says the SS) of questioning and even insulting they let him go without so much as an appolgy

question:
is it bad for the SS to profile?
or is it bad that the SS doesnt know its ass from its head about this world and the people in it.
would he have been detained had the secret service not been staying at the campus?

Section 412 of the Patriot Act permits the attorney general of the United States to detain aliens he certifies as threats to national security for up to seven days without bringing charges. The standard to establish grounds for detention is the familiar reasonable suspicion standard enunciated by the Supreme Court in Terry. The certification by the attorney general must set forth that he has "reasonable grounds to believe" the person being detained will commit espionage or sabotage, try to overthrow the government, commit terrorist acts, or otherwise engage in acts that would endanger national security. At the conclusion of seven days, the detention may continue in the event the alien is charged with a crime or violation of visa conditions. But if circumstances prohibit the repatriation of a person for an immigration offense, the detention may continue indefinitely so long as certified by the attorney general every six months. Under the USA Patriot Act, the prospect exists that a person who is confined for a violation of conditions of entry into the US, but cannot be deported to his or her country of origin, may be indefinitely confined here without criminal charges ever filed against them.

Here's an interesting read as well.

that article states only one hard number that has actually been researched, and that number is wrt drug use. it draws no connections to any studies regarding terrorism. IMHO without adequate statistical support, that paper is nothing more than an editorial. it means nothing to me.

Ummm...yeah. That's why I called it an "interesting read", as opposed to a peer-reviewed statisical analysis.

that is a ridiculous statement. u should be ashamed to be you.

You are taking my comment totally wrong. He is the one who is talking like the entire country of Iraq is against us so I told him to go join the military which is his only way of killing the people he thinks are against us not that the U.S Military goes and kills innocent Iraqis for fun. I have friends in the military and a brother in law there. They've all killed and continue to kill, I talk with them via AIM. It is what they got to do, but I was simply putting it in a way to go with his hate.

I guess you can get away with it in some US cities, but it?s nearly suicide to use that here in Toronto and (like someone said) UK (and other areas with a lot of south asians).

I am also brown and am offended by that word, but I won?t go in to a hissy fit if people here use it. I know people also use Japs to describe Japanese people, even though many have pointed out that it is not a polite word to use.

Well, Bush used it in a speech once when he was talking about India/Pakistan :D It caused a little ruckus over in the UK because they thought he was using it as a slur. Even Pakistani-American groups dismissed it as not being a slur here in the US.

Ignoring the Bush incident, beloved patriot is not a racial slur because it?s a short word for Pakistani, it?s a word used by the British in the old days, to call Indians in a demeaning way.

EDIT - I should add it did start out as beloved patriot/pakistani, but it applies to pretty much most south asians now.

Ignorant people like you should be banned instantly off this board.

We are not "occupying the land of the arabs" you stupid dork. We are helping them to make their miserable country less f-ed up.

Your comments would be more welcome on a pro-jihad website.

Hey dumbass that is your opinion that we are there to help the people of Iraq now isn't it. Millions of people in the U.S think otherwise as well. Just because you have a different political view doesnt make my comment pro-jihad. Get your head out of your ass.

Yes, I know. It's just not a slur in the US according to most people including South Asian organizations.

You can't weasle out that easy. LOL Besides, whites are still the only race that nobody minds anybody making fun of because it's not really racist to make fun of the white race.

And as stereotypical as it sounds, how many "white" "hispanic" or "black" people are were there on the planes, or are portrayed as terrorists? That is why people of South Asian and Middle Eastern backgrounds are questioned. I'm not saying I agree with this practice at all, but it's going to happen.

Glad that the college is behind him though, an apology wouldn't hurt, but isn't necessary IMHO.

EDIT: Btw, this is more then likely going to get moved into the sewer known as P&N.

The Dirty Bomber (Padilla) was Hispanic
The Shoe Bomber (Reed?) was Black

This kind of makes the other guy's point. (to a degree...) There have been non Middle Eastern terrorists, but the fact that you can count them (at least the known ones...) on one hand while the movement is made up of tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands that are Middle Eastern backs up the idea that looking at Middle Eastern people with more suspicion than others is understandable.

I do condemn authorities abusing their powers and mistreating innocent people without much cause.

For me it's a mixed bag though. I can understand the "better safe than sorry" approach and risk bothering innocent people in an effort to prevent any real threats from going unnoticed. I also think that innocent people should not be harassed without good probable cause.

FBI just came to my door and arrested me as well as 100 million other Americans including John Kerry for using the term occupation for our forces in Iraq. Looks like Bush is going to get 100% of the vote.

I think it depends on the person. Personally, I won?t stab anyone who uses that word on me. I know most Asian people avoid conflict as much as possible. But there?s a new breed of idiots with the thug mentality that will be offended by those words. So it goes for any ethnicity I guess. Hmm... I think I need to sleep.

Oh, when I said ?ignoring the bush incident?, I just wanted to point out that the word goes beyond Pakistani people, so I don?t care what the Pakistani-American coalition of something has to say.

OMG... are you serious?!... dude its VERY easy to tell a sikh person apart from a muslim person... if they are going to racially profile atleast they should know how to tell the race apart from other races...

Hey I see muslims, indians, beloved patriot's and several other middle eastern decent people every day and I can't tell who's who.
Obviously you can tell since you're of middle eastern decent.

Agreed.

sikh

muslim

Now you seriously can't tell the difference between the head dresses?

man how the hell am I suppose to know where they're from by the head dress.
If you ask an average american to identify where the person is from by the headdress, they'll have no clue.

average american is f*cking ignorant then. hell my parents taught me this when i was little, and i'm chinese for f*ck sake. learning about other cultures that hard? :p

bah, in cananda in some places they have these cultural festivals things u can go to learn about stuff too:p not so much here.

Most Americans know very little about other cultures, and most don't really care.

that sounds just like mccarthy commi red scare bullshit america was fed 50 years ago.... there was no mass majority of communist trying to take down america. and theres no mass majority of muslims trying to take down america either. it was the government spreading FUD trying to justify its action when encroaching on peoples and the worlds freedom, just like our government is doing today thanks to george, the patriot act and mass media playing off fears of america people.

if it was the arab world occuping the US kkk members would be over in the middle east trying cause as much havoc as they can. thats exactly the situation now. basically muslim EXTREMISTS(in the way kkk are extremists) are waging a war on us.

and a war on terrorism can not be won. the only way to makes things better is for the US to start making friends of everybody and stop oppressing them. there will ALWAYS be terrorists, in no way can we stop someone from trying to terrorize. there is a changing face of terrorism in that we can never stop one group, it will never work. a war on terrorism is just like a war on drugs, something that can not be won.

i think that some very careful racial profiling is ok and i'm indian. i've been racially profiled before (i was going to an engineering conference with 14 of my engineering friends who were white / black / asian friends and i was the only person to get pulled aside and be personally searched (pulled aside, frisked, and they made me take my shoes off and scanned through the x-ray machines) as well as have my pack-away (not carry-on) bag fully searched - this happened at all 4 of the airports where we were boarding planes) which is really odd cause i'm south indian. the difference between just south and north indians is really obvious, let alone the difference between south indian and middle eastern.

any kind of race-based profiling needs to be done with careful thought. "brown" is NOT a valid criteria for racial profiling. you need a smart racial profiling system that looks for patterns. the reason i think careful racial profiling is ok is because i don't believe in looking at the world through black and white blinders. shades of grey are important as well.

what i don't agree with in this guy's experience is the lack of apology. i don't care if they're doing their frikkin jobs. if you expect me to get harassed because my skin is brown, i very damn well expect you to at least apologize when you find i'm clean and am not carrying any nefarious substances. it would not kill or shame the secret service to apologize to this person for the grief they've caused him.

Why would you assume without question that this account of what happened is in fact a true account of what happened? How do you know any of this even happened or if an apology was in fact given?

Has it occurred to anybody that this could just be a case of some dumb kid pulling a troll on ATOT?

I require proof where are others feel free to run with undocumented BS. I calls em like I sees em.

Obviously you can tell since you're of middle eastern decent.

Agreed.

Can you tell a Cuban from an Argentinian, Peruvian, Chilean, Columbian........ etc...? (maybe you can, but I'm betting you can't)

I wouldn't get so enraged about it. If a person is not exposed to other ethnicities/cultures very much, I wouldn't hold it against them for not knowing the subtle (at least to them..) differences. Also, studying about different cultures and actualy living amongst them are very different things.

Of course being out right racicst is not accetpable either, and I do think that if it's a person's job (secret service...) to deal with people of different ethicities/cultures, they should learn about the differences to prevent from making blanket assumptions.

"Ignorant people like you should be banned instantly off this board.

We are not "occupying the land of the arabs" you stupid dork. We are helping them to make their miserable country less f-ed up.

Your comments would be more welcome on a pro-jihad website. "

Crazyfool, you are by far one of the most stupid, ignorant and (obviously) brainwashed people I've ever seen on this board. Everything you spew is some incarnation of a mediablurb, likely, from the OReilly Factor.

You then have the nerve to suggest the banning of ignorant people? This suggestion is an ATOT version of what your ilk are trying to do out in the real world. You take you 5th grade understanding of the world and threaten to "ban" all those who disagree.

You REALLY need to go back to school middle school.

I require proof where are others feel free to run with undocumented BS. I calls em like I sees em

My god. This is just too much. But thank you for proving my point. Your very existence in this thread stands as testament to the unwashed masses of America who neither comprehend nor care to understand the rest of the world.

Crazyfool, my fellow ATOTers, is middle America. He's the average moron that takes heart in Papa Bush's bedtime stories, and actually believes that peace is obtained by alienation and agression. And as shocking as it may be, his brainless vote counts as much as yours. God save us.

oh, don't be silly, this isn't about something fluid like race at all. its about culture, well really more religion then culture. its not pretending you can reliably tell whos japanese from korean just by looks. this is like seeing a catholic church and thinking its a muslim mosque. or seeing a buhdist monk and thinking, oh hey.. a christian:p these are things that are rather well defined and reasonably consistent.

That's not what I meant.

The differences between the countries I mentioned are much more cultural than physical looks (looks are slightly different but the major differences are dress, customs, accents, etc...).

I do agree that not knowing anything about other cultures is kind of ridiculous, but the examples you gave are very extreme.

Even if I knew nothing about Catholics and Muslims, they're still different enough that I would not associate them as being the same group.

Anyways, I don't disagree with you, I just think you're being a bit too critical of American ignorance.

I've been around many people that were from other countries that were very ignorant of American culture.

To me, it seems like there's a double standard. Americans (dumb rednecks excluded... every country has a lower class of the uneducated. It's not only an American trait...) don't seem to mind when others don't know or understand us, but when an American doesn't understand some one else's ways, it seems the American is given a much harder time for it.
