I notice with Win7 x64 Ultimate sometimes I have to completely exit the game and reload the game, reason being my draw attack button(middle mouse button ) and block (right button) does not work at initial loading of the game,so far its not serious but would be interesting to find out if its a bug ie Win7/Risen combo or driver issue,it did not happen in Vista x64 so not sure on the cause at this time.

Stability is excellent so I'm still enjoying and playing the game.

I can not remap any buttons through the game menu (running WinXP x64). Luckily I have a saitek control with an app to remap all it's buttons, so I got around that. That's about the only bug i've encountered thus far besides a stuttering glitch which was fixed by stepping back my nvidia drivers.

If the patch fixes the key mapping problem, great. If not it's not big deal since I have a workaround and it may be a XP x64 issue anyway. From what I read it appears the patch is a fix for those with GeForce 7 cards, but nothing else is mentioned.

Just finished - Awesome game [few minor bugs - nothing significant], not an awesome ending [boss fight was pretty easy]. Might replay it again just to see how much different the dialogue / story is when I join the order and being a fireballbattlemage [I've read the other 2 spells are lackluster] and to see if the mobs will use the same "avoidance" tactics or if they'll just run straight into the fireballs.

That was fast, btw I'm still in harbour town and I'm ready to join the order(Mage) however I'm still exploring and running back to bandit camp a few times to do some quests there(they are a lazy bunch lol).

I'd say I spent about 40ish hours of game play time from start to finish [I chose the bandit/fighter route, mastered swords, lock picking, pickpocket, smithing, and alchemy - learned a few +5 strength & +5 dexterity skills too]. Things really speed up once you start looting teleport discs and loot or "smith" powerful weapons/trinkets. I also didn't really pay much attention to what I looted [which was nearly everything I killed or found]...and I escaped through quite a lot of the dialogues [I'm a fast reader].

Suggestion - if you're building a fighter character - do not eat the +1 strength and dexterity plants - learn alchemy so you can make +5 potions. :)

Thanks for that suggestion, i'll remember to keep those around. I remember the dragonroot plants (or whatever they were) from G2 that you could use to brew into a potion that gave you more points. There were only a couple around in the world.

Wow, that was really fast play. Those 40+ hours, did that include side quests and exploration for the sake of wanting to see what is around the next bend, or did you pretty much stick to the main story?

I'm barley able to get an hour a night to play video games anymore. Kinda sucks..

I didn't get all of the teleport discs [I could only find 11]. But pretty sure I did all the quests. I was impatient with regards to loot and dialogue - so I'd guestimate maybe adding another 2-3 hours if you listen to all the dialogue and sort through the loot.

I did the same thing when I played WoW - I'd zip through the dialogue/loots and adapt my play style for speed and efficiency.

Never played Gothic series before - just tried Gothic 3 demo - holy hell - melee combat, combat animations, outdoors, and general look/feel of the game are terribad when compared to Risen :(

Gothic 3 was definitely pretty buggy whereas Risen seems very polished and thoroughly tested. I'm pretty sure JoWood rushed Piranha Bytes to get G3 out the door and that's why it was in the state it was upon initial release.

Honestly though, if you enjoyed Risen grab G3 for cheap and apply the latest community patch. It fixes the combat to a degree and most importantly, the performance, and many quests and random bugs are fixed as well. G3 has a bigger world which is not a filled up as Risen, but it's still a great game. Or even better.. grab G2 from gog.com. As long as you can get over the dated graphics you will have a blast with that one. Best in the series IMO.

Found Gothic Universe [includes 1,2,3] for $9.00 shipped [might have to play 1 and 2 on my win2k virtual pc as the demos didn't like Vista very well].

Tried demos for 1 and 2 as well - it's going to take A LOT for me to get over the graphics, lack of a mouse cursor, and odd keyboard actions and I'm hoping the community patch fixes combat [I've heard that Gothic 3 Forsaken Gods Improved graphics quality thanks to updated engine technology and Improves upon the combat system with new combat rules?]

The story line in G1 and G2 Night of the Raven will help you forget those graphics which IMO are still quite okay. By the way coloumb, try the Bloodfly Express in G1 especially under a full moon. You'll see... ;)

I'm still at chapter 1 and not even joined a side yet, however got over 10k in gold so I'm going to be a rich person in the game not matter what side I join, stability is still excellent and I feel the game was worth the money.

I don't know how many hours I have played, but have been running between the bandit and harbour city like a yoyo.

Btw this is still on Win7 x64 Ultimate RTM.

How did you get so much gold? So far I'm enjoying the game, never played Gothic before, it doesnt seem very buggy a couple of bugs, but nothing to diminish the game really, it is different than most other RPGs I've played, its relaxing in a way

Loot monkey I'm,get pickpocket skill, gutting animals skill, lockpicking skill and loot everything you find even plants outside ,plus do a lot of side quests and exploring.

Btw I been saving most of my LP points so that helps build your money up rather then spend them all until you got no gold left(or LP points).

So I did the demo, but was not that impressed with it. Issues with the demo (but maybe I missed some areas):

1. No place to try out a "market" for buying and selling. Only found the one farmer that did a barter.
2. No magic to test out.
3. No long range weapons to try out.
4. No ability to raise a level or two even though you earn experience for quests and kills.
5. Clunky combat style.

If I missed something, please let me know so I can go back and give it a try.

Problem with demo is its very short, the retail game has lot of areas where you can trade and buy stuff ie harbour town, magic you can use scrolls ,either find them via loot chests or pickpocket, buy etc...long range weapons again you can buy bows etc and get NPCs to train you ie hunters in bandit game, you do level up obviously so its down to the demo being too short.

End of the day the demo does not really show much compared to the retail version.

Finally have a free night to play, go out to grab it - and it's sold out everywhere in town.

Shit.

I want a box copy.

I got it from D2D, who I never usually buy from. This might preclude me from using mods down the road, but oh well.

I've put about 10 hours into this game and just barely started Chapter 2. This is going to be a long game.

It's pretty fun. I have fond memories of the original Gothic so this is kind of a flash back for me. Game runs smooth with my 4870 at 1080p.

One thing I am annoyed about is that I didn't realize until after I joined the bandits that I can't use any magic except for scrolls. I didn't want all the mage powers but I would have liked to use a little something. I'm also finding out that the game overall is not as satisfying or really meant to be played as a bandit, as the quests seem to favor joining the order and that is the way the game was meant to be played.

This has kind of pissed me off and changed my strategy to turn myself into a sword wielding tank, hell bent on killing everything that will die.

Is this because you take the time to do every possible side quest or was this just generally wandering, completing the "main" quests, and doing a few side quests? I'm very close to buying this game I just want to know the typical length of a play through.

This is by doing most of the quests, not all. And this is spending most of my time working on a quest at any given moment, not taking much time to wander or explore. This is the official game time via the save menu, so it doesn't factor in all of my quick loads to redo a fight. This game is pretty hardcore and realistically I've probably put 14 hours in.

I've only covered about 20% of the map I would guesstimate. Based on what I've read in other forums, if you try to accomplish most of what the game has to offer (as opposed to rushing through the main quest at full speed) you can expect a 40 hour game.
