Okay, so I bought the DVD this afternoon and loaded in. I am using Windows 7 64 bit, and all my specs exceed the recommended specs. However, when I try to start it through the shortcut or through Autoplay of the DVD, I get "Please Insert the Original DVD for Risen" Error that seems to be plaguing this game. I have tried the international patch, the Trage updater for DRM, uninstall and reinstall, rebooting, running in compatability mode with XP, etc. and nothing is working. Has anyone figured out a solution for this yet?

That's a bummer. Not that it helps (or perhaps it does?), I have it on Steam and it, apparently, as applied the appropriate patches to make it work.

You've probably already tried this but have you messed around with the compatability tab?

I'm not sure what your problem is ,anyway all I did with my retail version was install the game and it ran fine,I did not need to run or use XP compat mode or run as admin,I did however have latest DX9.0c version installed for my Win7 x64.

Btw some tips at their forums here to get it running http://forum.deepsilver.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47424

Try the suggestions on this link [deepsilver forums - risen technical support] - lots of suggestions and fixes for your issue:

http://www.forum.deepsilver.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43489

"I had this problem myself when trying to start the game from the DVD, but I was able to avoid it by starting the game by making a shortcut to the exe file of the game (C:\Program Files\Deep Silver\Risen\bin\Risen.exe) and starting the game using the shortcut."

"One possible solution is to make an image of the disc with a program such as ImgBurn (free) and then mount it in a virtual drive program. This worked fine for the pirates (the pirate releases don't include cracks) so it should work for legitimate players too. Note that running from an image does not bypass the copy protection, it just provides the disc data in a manner that is more compatible with Tages than some real drives are. You will still need to have the Tages driver installed, so if you are stuck at the Tages installation step this won't get you any further."

"It was "fixed" when making a new shortcut to the risen.exe file."

Contact Tech support for the game [should be in the game manual] - "I finally got a solution from support. They sent me a zip archive which when unpacked in to the game directory changes the game to the download version. They gave me an online activation key to run it"

Copyprotection Problems with ToshibaDVD Drive
Uninstall all Virtual Drives and best if also you uninstall all software belonging to it.

Yes, I have read through the above posts and links with all of this and have tried it with no success (minus the mounting of a virtual drive), which I will not do as this is utterly ridiculous to play a game.

I did do the reply to their technical with the scan that is attached, but have not heard back from them. What a waste...

Eh.. /shrug. Don't know what else to say [maybe this is why people prefer consoles - none of this idiotic "it might work" on your pc]. It IS a fun game...once you get it working.

Maybe I will be ok, and if I am I guess I have to apologize to PB for bitching about the crash issue.

I haven't played Risen in a while and I redownloaded Far Cry 2 to give it another shot. When you first start FC2 the settings are set to mediumish and it had run fine on high for me previously, so I set everything to high.

Well - about 2 minutes into the opening cut scene my PC had a blue screen/restart crash, just like in Risen. So I opened my PC up to see if anything was wrong.

It was burning up in there; shit was almost too hot to touch right away. I clean my PC about once every 2-3 months and I never smoke around it, but I always use the desk lamp I have on when I game for light when I'm cleaning. This time the desk lamp had just burned out it's bulb, so I was using the ceiling light.

With the ceiling light on I was able to see underneath the CPU fan more clearly, and it was clogged with dust. My poor X2 6400+ must have been severly overheating when being taxed during games like Risen and FC2 (especially when combined with the 8800 Ultra furnace). So I blasted it with air until it was clear.

I only had time to play Risen for about 10 minutes after I put everything back together, and it didn't crash. I'll spen more time with it later to see if it remains stable.

Lesson learned - from now on I'll clean my PC with the ceiling light on.

Glad you got it working. It's a great game.

I hear you about dust and whatnot. I use a mac mini that's a few years old as my main machine and the fan was kicking into high gear constantly and shutting down while playing videos. I took the thing apart and the insides were covered in dust. I cleared all that out and it runs super quiet now and doesn't crash any longer. It's crazy how dust buildup can effect your system..

heh..I was actually going to suggest that [check the inside of your pc]. My PC recently died - the power supply decided it didn't like all that fuzz dust inside [thankfully OCZ is replacing it under warranty]. I think the last time I cleaned out the PC was 6 months ago - it amazes me how freakin dusty it gets inside - I should clean out the computer as often as I'm suppose to change the house furnace filters [every 3 months]. :)
Glad you got it working
