I don't really like the combat to be honest. Plus the game seems pretty stale...as in, seen it all before in the gothic games. Plus the world is tiny compared to previous gothic games. Hopefully it gets better.

At the lower levels combat wise you have to think and know when to block with shield, later on once you get more strength and better weapons plus sword skill if you go that route its gets a lot easier.
As a mage I have no real difficulty with any mob, only a little tricky if I get a lot of mobs rush me in a confined area.

What are you doing fighting farmers,stealing?..I suggest you get pickpocket skill and lockpick at some point maybe sneak if you really like stealing stuff ie thieft like.
Yes the world is tiny compared to Gothic 3 but I'm still on chapter 2 and I know there is at least 2 more chapters, also with this game I keep going back to the same areas and finding hidden doors, areas and even completing some quests that I missed.

Remember in this game you are a castaway survivor and a wimp at the start so can't expect to be GOD like going round killing things with ease, that takes time and effort plus makes the game more interesting and challenging.

As a level 23 mage myself I don't have much trouble but even I have to be careful ie with hidden traps in dungeons ,think before I act in some situations etc....

Story wise without any spoilers I feel the game got better once I went to the monastry and became a mage, quests were good and thats where the story sort of takes off.

Update on my mage,I'm now on chapter 4 with level 10 fireball ,basically no mobs are an issue for me so far.

I would say have at least 100 minimal for mana(130-200 is great) and strength you need about 70 str for best staff weapon in the game(80 damage).

It's still a very good game, not much I can say now without spoilers.

Compared to Gothic 1-3, combat is a lot easier [I just finished Gothic 1 and had to enable god mode because the combat was frustratingly terribad - not to mention the game required you to run all over the freakin map - reminded me of the low level quests in WoW - "oh yeah - you need to go get 4 more components which are scattered ALL over the 4 corners of the map - have fun walking for 15 minutes to each point!]

The key is to level up your weapon skills and then learn alchemy skills to make permanent strength/dexterity potions.

I'm 20 hours in or so and just started chapter 2. The story is starting to pick up now. Just cleared out the eastern temple and killed my first lizard with the demon 2-handed sword I found in that ruin, pretty badass. Can't stop playing. GOTY for me.

If the demo represents the quality of the final game, this may very well be the best game I have played in a long time. I really enjoyed the demo. They somehow captured the atmosphere. The voice over is done really well... But from what I have found in past games is that the demo is extra polished and the game kinda goes down the crapper from there, quality wise.

I am also extremely impressive with the performance and the graphics. I think I am going to pick this one up... It feels like Oblivion with a purpose... So, that alone makes it a better game.

I've always preferred the Gothic series games over the Elder Scrolls series. Morrowind came close, but nothing can compare to Gothic 2 IMO. Risen is really just Gothic 4 IMO.

If nothing else it's superior since the monsters don't level with you, first and foremost, and second, every cave, chest, ruin, etc, is hand built and not random like in Oblivion. That's what always bugged me the most about that game. Made exploration pointless.

I still haven't found a boxed copy; apparently they didn't ship many copies to my hometown:disgust:

I'm going to look for it again today.

One question:

I downloaded the demo a while back and it played fine. Since then I had to replace my HD.

I redownloded the demo to explore a little more and now all of a sudden I'm having problems running it.

It crashes often and stutter way worse than before. Could it be my GPU driver?

Back when I tried it the first time I was using an older Nvidia driver; since I put in the HD I downloaded the latest one. Could this be part of the issue?

Has anybody had driver problems running Risen? If so, which drivers do you use? I have some older ones on a removable disc.

There's a game patch out for Geforce 6/7 cards link. .
The game is excellent on stability with my 4870 card(9.9s drivers) and Win7 x64.

You don't say your specs, anyway might be worth updating your DX9.0c to latest version (Aug 2009).

Well I finally found one bad thing about this game, without going into details is the ending thats all I'm going to say, however its a good game and polished ,I'll be replaying it at some point down the road as a warrior, mage at higher levels is like GOD in this game.

Man, I just checked my order.

WTF - the estimated delivery date is fricking NOV 10!

Maybe I should cancel and keep looking locally.

Did they just not print enough copies to meet demand?

BTW - the ending of Gothic 2 wasn't exactly a gem, so if Risen delivers up till the I'll be ok.

Can't you just phone up some stores and see if they have it in stock?

Last time I checked no one had it (the closest was a gamespot about an hour away).

When I placed my order with Amazon they gave a delivery date of Wed next week; I was ok with that.

I'm pretty irritated it's been changed to that far away.

I guess I'll check again today.

Bit confused -- was curious about your note so I checked bestbuy and they list the release date as 10/27.

I thought the game had been out for weeks.

Did I break the plot in Risen somehow?

**************************SPOILERS********************************

I saved Patty and gave the map to Romanov (I think I've overpowered myself with permanent strenght potions; the ghouls are pretty easy now).

Romanov leaves and says he doesn't want to see me or Patty ever again, and tells me where Patty is. I go to free Patty.

She calls me an idiot and tells me to hurry and intercept him; she'll meet me at the Don's tunnel. So - figuring it might be some sort of timed puzzle -I teleport to the Harbor city and run down there. No Patty.

Romanov attacks me on sight. Since I'm so strong I kill him and his guys fairly quickly, except for Vasilli (I think that's his name). I pounded and evaded that guy for a few minutes before he finally started taking damage. So now I'm thinking - did I just break the plot?

Anyway - still no Patty. Finally, I go back to the place she was being held and she's still sitting there. I talk to her and tell her about Romanov. She says she's going back to the city. But she still just sits there.

So I ask her to join me and she does. I figure I'm going to try to run her abck to the city. On the way we meet some lizard guys and she kills them by herself. They have some teleport stones on them; neither the teleport stones nor the lizard guys have been referenced by any NPC so far. The only Lizard guy I've seen is the priest in the eastern temple.

By this time I'm really starting to think that I've messed up the storyline somehow.

Should I just keep going or should I load up an old save? I'm pretty sure I have a save from right before I enter the cave where the 5 graves are.

I would reload simply because that is an odd/crappy way of doing the puzzle. However, I don't think you've broken anything. Unfortunately, the quests at the end of Risen are very poorly implemented, Often you don't know who they originate from or how to complete them, you just get the middle. Such as killing the Lizard Leaders.

I just love this game.

I keep finding myself running around the harbor town, talking to people to settle disputes, investigate crimes and then sneak into peoples homes at night to steal stuff and not worried about the action stuff so much. It's pretty wild. It's nice to see a game utilize the day and night cycle (people go to sleep) to the point where it affects gameplay.

I think what prompted me to go back to this game was Divinity 2. I have it, but 5 minutes into the game I started reminded myself that I need to wrap up Risen before getting too deep into it.

Also, I love the voice acting in the game. :)

I just finished the game about a week ago. I was about 99% through it a few months ago and then picked up a PS3 and Demons Souls.. lol

I really enjoyed it and I hope they make an expansion. I know others have claimed that the ending sucked, but I didn't think it was all that bad.. I mean, what were you expecting to happen?

I can hardly believe I'm typing this after being such a staunch supporter of PB over the years, but I'm almost to the point of giving up on Risen.

I don't mind anything I've encountered in the game. I actually think it's a diamond in the rough that could easily be built upon in a sequel, much like Gothic 2 expanded the original Gothic. And for me the story is more than servicable.

It's the crashes. Ever since Act 3 my PC has been crashing at least every ten minutes (I mostly can't get even five minutes into a game). Occasionally I can play up to 15, 20 minutes before lock up.

I'm not only having trouble with simple crashes. One in three or four of these incidents immediately bluescreen, restart my PC and, for some reason, erase all of my saved internet info. It's a huge pain in the ass to dig up all of my passwords every time it happens.

I've tried everything to solve the problem, including:

Lurked every Risen related forum to try suggested fixes
Updated every driver
tried every suggested Nvidia driver
tried disabling Physx
messed with every possible video and audio setting

I haven't left a stone unturned. There is no pattern to when they might occur; as a matter of fact, they frequently happen during dialogue trees.

It's too bad, because until I entered the temple Risen had been pretty stable. I would estimate less than 10 crashes overall.

PB still deserves a LOT of credit for Gothic and Gothic 2, and I'll always love and defend those games.

But they are no longer a release date must-buy company for me.

I use an 8800 Ultra with Windows XP, in case anybody had something else to try.

It really sucks that you are having all those issues man. I have an 8800GT and I did have to step back a driver version to get the game to run smoothly at first because of stuttering, but after that I didn't experience a single issue. You can see my computer specs in my sig, it's the 939 system listed there.

Do you have the latest patch? This page might help you out: http://www.gamebrood.com/2009/10/05...audio-issues-screen-flickering-fix-and-fixes/

I played it on Win7 x64 with my 4870 card , its was very stable,I did have latest DX9.0c installed so have you checked your DX9 is updated to latest version?..You can get DX9.0c here http://www.filehippo.com/download_directx/ ,btw anything overclocked that may cause issues?
