I mean, do they "not know", or do they not care? 43% of Americans are either OK with it, or "don't know". What percentage of Americans went and pulled the lever for Trump after having lived from 2017-2021?They probably don’t even know enough to know that there is something to be concerned about.
That‘s a failing, and one that bad people can take advantage of, and when the bad people are getting close to having the numbers to do bad things it’s much more dangerous, but what good is it to blame people who just don’t know?
That's why I don't just pass them off as "bystanders". Most likely they're the kind of people who see how shit is going, and join the "winning" team to try to get credit for it. And in this case, the "winning team" is a bunch of fascists. So, how much is it that they "don't know", as much as they just "don't care" because they're probably automatic members of the in-group already?
Fair enough. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying I think it's a mistake to assume that the 10% you're talking about won't just be "Good Americans" once the fascists take power, the way millions of "Good Germans" just carried on with their lives in the mid 30s.Yes, it's terrible to be complacent when democracy is threatened. But 10% fewer who "support" means almost 25% fewer active supporters of it (43% v. 33%), be the support in word or in deed. Which is why I reject the notion of lumping them together. Because I'd rather have someone be complacent than to blather out conspiracy theories over social media or else do worse, like on 1/6.
Ideally in a democracy everyone gives a damn. But reality says otherwise.
