I agree... as long as you are not "hurting" anyone else in the process... eat as much as you want, smoke as much as you want, drink as much as you want.

You'd be hurting those who care about you. Watching a person willfully impede their life's longevity on a daily basis can screw up those who care for them.

I agree that it is sad when someone is overweight because of extenuating circumstances, but 90% of people are fat because they lack the discipline to do something about it. I am sick and tired of people comparing obesity like it is a race or color division; it is not, it is a choice. It is a weakness, not an inherent trait. For those of you that are getting defensive because you are a little heavy and just can't lose weight no matter what you do....... you are not who we are complaining about. You might be the person that is uncomfortable in an airplane seat, but you are not the guy who's a$$ is creeping under the armrests and smelling like a dirty sock and moldy sweat. If that is still you, then get your thyroid checked OR put down that Twinkie and quit lying to yourself and others. People are obese (different than carrying a few extra pounds) for a reason and most of the time it is treatable.

Has anyone else noticed that obesity seems to be a larger problem the further down the social scale you go? Yes, there are obese people in ever social class, but the ratio is inversely proportional to the social scale. Why? Because food is relatively cheap and easy to access. People can comfort themselves with food more cheaply and quickly than they can go to therapy. It is less expensive and requires less effort to eat a twinkie than go to a movie, join a gym or take in a round of golf. If you wanted to argue that obese people are naturally less disciplined or are weaker mentally then maybe that would be comparable to being a minority or having some sort of real, persceptible handicap, but otherwise, it's just a matter of having enough discipline to take care of yourself and stop blaming others for your misery. I'm sure that fat people don't want to be fat. I'm going bald and I don't want to go bald. I don't think that I should be provided with a hat when I go to the zoo to protect my head from the sun. If I need some sort of special arrangement, I'll make it myself.

I am just tired of people who are unable to take responsibility for their personal situations. Everyone has a set of problems and it is our resonsibility to make the most with what we've got. No one else is responsible for making your life more comfortable. There is altogether too many people with a sense of entitlement and not enough sense of responsibiliy.

agreed... few of us are defending exceptions to the rule but i'm willing to bet that at least 90% of fat people are fat due to being lazy and having a lack of discipline.

Fat people are a disgrace. It can be nothing more than a sign of disrespect, both to yourself and those around you.
And all this crap about 'fat' genes? Bollocks.
People are just making excuses, as they are wont to do.

How come the "overweight" population in other countries is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than that of the US? Stayed in Montreal for a week last summer and it hit me when we hit the first rest area in New York that holy sh*t Americans are fat. It's the same way in other developed countries too...

Morbidly overweight people generally HATE themselves and are that way due to a psychlogical or medical reason.

It could be because we're spending 9 times as much time in front of the TV as we are being active: link. The fact that the average US worker clocks more hours than the average worker in other developed countries probably doesn't help to promote exercise either: "According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor, workers in the United States clocked in 1,821 hours in 2001, while those in Germany logged 1,467 hours."

Where does this leave us? It leaves us with a higher percentage of overweight teenagers than in 14 other countries: link.

None of these are the cause of obesity. The cause, as already stated, is a lack of motivation and discipline to restrain from eating way too much and to spend time (and calories) exercising.

The lack of time issue also contributes to more fast food and eating out at restaurants. I encourage all of you to look at the nutrition facts of a restaurant before going there, because the portion sizes are just ridiculous these days. I realized that my favorite meal at Chilis--the chicken crispers--is a cool 1,870 calories, and I used to eat it all. Now my wife and I split the quesadillas, giving us 860 calories each. I also now get a Whopper Jr. without mayo and small fries at BK, which is 520 calories. Not nutritious food, but the calories are way better than the Whopper with no mayo and large fries I used to get, with 1170 calories.

I'm lazy. I eat a lot. I eat 3 meals a day in college adn back in HS. People skip out on breakfast a lot, but I had the full thing, hashbrowns, eggs, fruit, blah blah. I was fat. I was like 175 at most at 5'9". That's nowhere near morbidly obese. I wore maybe 34" waist jeans. What the hell. I was lazy. I spent HOURS AND HOURS in front of my computer (I still do), and I wasn't that fat. I ate in-n-out from time to time. I don't see how you can hit 250lbs+ like some people.

Even now in college, I don't eat AS HEALTHY as I did before. I got fat before because I ate a LOT, and my parents would shove food on my plate. Now I still eat out, if not more, it's just that I starve sometimes because I'm too lazy to pack lunch or I need to run off to the library. Yea, I'm a 155-160lbs at 5'9" with somewhat of a tummy. Even when I worked out and ran for 4 months straight, I built some muscle here re and there, but there was still fat.

If you're morbidly obese, you're disgusting. I'm sorry. You must be really fvcked up to get to that state or you just have really really really really really bad metabolism, but considering my metabolism is roughly average, I don't see you can get so fat when I participate in In-n-Out 10x10 eating contests, ice cream eating contests etc....

I'm gonna laugh at you in ten years when you're fat.
Then I'm gonna eat you, with a side of bacon.

I'm 6'3" 205 and I'm a bit overweight. I'd like to be 190 or so.

The people who are saying that all the fat people just eat too much and don't exercise and don't care really I don't think really have any idea what actually goes into being overweight. Yes, there are a good amount of people that simply eat too much, don't exercise and are overweight. They're the ones that usually take those carts in the big stores and use those, instead of walking around and when they get home they immediately go to the fridge and start eating again because the trip to the store was so much work for them. But there are others (myself included) that can eat as little as possible, drink 8-9 bottles of water and try to exercise when time allots because of very busy schedules who are overweight or obese. If anybody ever told me I'm overweight because I eat too much, look at my intake for the last few weeks. I'll admit, I don't work out 5 days a week and starve myself just to lose weight but there are legitimate reasons to being overweight OTHER than eating too much and not exercising.

Geez, can I park my car in your garage? You can't violate simple thermodynamics. If what you said was really true, you'd put $5 in gas in your car and it'd last a month of daily commutes.

Go exercise and eat less you fat asses. It takes more than a few weeks to lose weight, it's more like a long term process that takes up to months before you see great progress.

it's not "OK" being overweight. it's ridiculously unhealthy.

making people feel okay about being fat will just be counterproductive in making people lose weight.

Well I'm a twig. 6'0, 135lbs-- I've actually lost weight in college. Entered freshman year around 142lbs. I am "active" I guess you could say... I play racquetball twice a week for an hour, in addition to walking probably a mile a day in getting to and from classes that are freakin far. I don't eat healthy-- usually 2 meals a day of fried greasy sh*t from our cafeterias. Anytime in between doing anything I'm usually sitting on my ass on the computer.

I guess my point is, I guess I'm lucky in the sense that I have an extra super fast metabolism and I'm sure if it was slower I'd be fat. I guess it all does depend on the person with regards to how much they want / have to work at staying healthy.

Aren't you hurting your family, loved ones, friends, etc. when you die of a heart attack at 40 years old? That's my biggest problem (aside from just being sorry/lazy, excluding medical conditions) with obese people. If you don't give a crap about how you look or your health, at least care enough to not die or have bad health problems when you have a spouse or kids.

I have a coworker who is overweight and she obviously doesn't care based on all the McDonald's combo meals I see her enjoying every day. But she has a husband and a teenage daughter. When you know the statistics associated with being obese and eating poorly, with ZERO exercise, why would your family not become an incentive to better yourself?

Maybe her family inspires a desire to die?

I find gay people offensive.

Just kidding. Lots of fat people can be annoying when it comes to airplanes, movie theaters, restaurants, etc.

I hope that I am not stuck next to a fat person on my flights this summer to China and Eastern Europe..3 hour domestic is bad enough!!

I'm basically the same way. I was just on a plane yesterday and let me tell you, it has gotten to the point when even medium sized people (people significantly smaller than me) have trouble squeezing in those seats. I always try for the aisle, just because if I'm in either the middle or the window I feel like I'm pushing too far into the other seats. But, I also have really long legs (which has nothing to do with being fat, by the way), and it's basically impossible to sit comfortably. With the person's seat in front of me back, I cannot have my legs in front of me, it's impossible. So, what am I supposed to do?

basically coming to that :/

You god-damn small people-you have not clue.

I'm 6'6" 250lbs and I don't feel comfortable sitting on a bus with someone in the next seat-an airplane is even worse unless it's buisness class or first class.

Smallies 😉
