How come the "overweight" population in other countries is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than that of the US? Stayed in Montreal for a week last summer and it hit me when we hit the first rest area in New York that holy sh*t Americans are fat. It's the same way in other developed countries too...
It could be because we're spending 9 times as much time in front of the TV as we are being active:

The fact that the average US worker clocks more hours than the average worker in other developed countries probably doesn't help to promote exercise either: "According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor, workers in the United States clocked in 1,821 hours in 2001, while those in Germany logged 1,467 hours."
Where does this leave us? It leaves us with a higher percentage of overweight teenagers than in 14 other countries:

None of these are the cause of obesity. The cause, as already stated, is a lack of motivation and discipline to restrain from eating way too much and to spend time (and calories) exercising.
The lack of time issue also contributes to more fast food and eating out at restaurants. I encourage all of you to look at the nutrition facts of a restaurant before going there, because the portion sizes are just ridiculous these days. I realized that my favorite meal at Chilis--the chicken crispers--is a cool 1,870 calories, and I used to eat it all. Now my wife and I split the quesadillas, giving us 860 calories each. I also now get a Whopper Jr. without mayo and small fries at BK, which is 520 calories. Not nutritious food, but the calories are way better than the Whopper with no mayo and large fries I used to get, with 1170 calories.
