Designers fo mass transit don't care about you. They care about moving people. They shoot for averages, not exceptions. They build in ADA compliance and that's it.

People who are obese should lose weight. Not for reasons of saving space on planes or buses, but for their own health. The fact that obesity is a problem is sad... People need to do their part to be healthy for them. 1 hour of exercise extends your life by 2 hours.... Obesity simply shortens your life and wears on your heart and joints.

my wife is a bit thick...so she should loose weight, maybe by exercising and eating right...

tell her that while she munches a carrot stick and runs past you doing a 5K.....some people ARE bigger, it's a fact of life. My wife can run 5K's, and I'll bet most the pimply faced skinny pasty geeks on here couldn't do that....

She just needs to take in less calories than her body needs per day.

Uh....yeah, Did I not mention she has dieted and not lost weight? That was counting calories, and ensuring that she has less coming in then going out....didn't help. Thanks for that useful idea, we never would have thought of it ourselves....

has she tried weight watchers? i know some women have a hard time losing weight. i had a couple female coworkers who were like that. they tried everything and nothing worked. then they got on the weight watchers plan. one lost 67 lbs, another lost 25, and the other lost 32. the one that lost 67, i hardly recognize anymore. she looks so different now.

if nothing else works, there is always surgery. my friend's dad is a gastric bypass and lapband surgeon and the before and after pics i see in his office are astounding. but surgery is only for extreme cases.

im no expert in this field by any means. so take what i say with a grain of salt

Why should we feel better about a drunk than a fat person?

Maybe you have a hard time accepting fat people! Do you feel the same about minorities?

What fuels your hate and misunderstanding?

fat people eat a lot and get little exercise; skinny people eat less and get more exercise

you're a doctor and/or scientist?

I have a friend who doesn't drink water and only drinks coke. He has also been known to eat McDonalds 3 times in one day occasionally. He does not eat any form of veggie and is 6'0 and 170 pounds and he gets little or no exercise. Explain that.

Also, I only take up one seat, but the guy in front of me is probably not pleased at having my knees in his back, maybe all tall people should have there legs cut off. After all they are hurting others with they way they are so they should fix it.

High Metabolism. Their body burns more calories per day, so they eat more.
I know people who have been known to pass out if they miss a meal. It's crazy.
Most of the time it catches up with you in the end. Heart disease can kill skinny folk too.
Kidney stones? That's what you get for drinking cokes like water.

That's what I hear, but how does that give them the moral high ground to call someone else fat.

Moral? Ha!
There is no morality when it comes to being judgmental.

I'll tell you one thing though, I would think much higher of someone who was obese and is now cut, than someone who has always been cut due to genetics.
I only take pride in things I have earned. And I think highly of people who have worked their way up.

Comparing someone's height to someone's weight is stupid. People who are not malnourished have absolutely no control over their height. The VAST majority of overweight people could control their weight if they wanted to and had the willpower to put down the bon-bons.

Yes, it's sad that there are a very small number of people who have medical issues that affect their weight. Yes, there are people with wide shoulders and waists who are more likely to be "stocky".

However, to apologize and make excuses for every overweight person is stupid. It's just PC crap that we shouldn't even hope that people would be considerate of others and themselves and stop eating junk food that makes them excessively fat.

LOL, and on top of that, he gets an attitude when you have to get up and go to the restroom, as if someone just asked him to climb up a mountain.
I have to admit that these two things get on my nerves when they happen to me as well. The exasperated little sigh I got last time from the guy blocking me from the aisle actually made me start to laugh at how ridiculous he was being. Vishnu forbid I try to leave when my bus stop is coming! Ah well.

I eat 1000x better than this guy but most people would say I was fat at some level and call him skinny. So why is that fair? I have noticed that vast majority of "skinny" people have a genentic predisposition for it on some level (in other words most of them eat far worse than I). Not saying that overweight people shouldn't do something to take care of it, but implying that all skinny people are "considerate of others" and "have self control" is stupid.

I'm close to the same, I'm 6' 3" @ 225 and hate going on mass/public transit.

Even going to the movies sucks unless I can get into a row with extra leg room.

The people who are saying that all the fat people just eat too much and don't exercise and don't care really I don't think really have any idea what actually goes into being overweight. Yes, there are a good amount of people that simply eat too much, don't exercise and are overweight. They're the ones that usually take those carts in the big stores and use those, instead of walking around and when they get home they immediately go to the fridge and start eating again because the trip to the store was so much work for them. But there are others (myself included) that can eat as little as possible, drink 8-9 bottles of water and try to exercise when time allots because of very busy schedules who are overweight or obese. If anybody ever told me I'm overweight because I eat too much, look at my intake for the last few weeks. I'll admit, I don't work out 5 days a week and starve myself just to lose weight but there are legitimate reasons to being overweight OTHER than eating too much and not exercising.

I didn't say that all skinny people are anything (though many middle-aged people no longer have a metabolism that will keep them skinny so they DO have to work to stay that way). I said that most grossly overweight people are inconsiderate of themselves and others, and it's true. Making excuses for people in our society who lack self control isn't helpful to anyone.

I am sure the large majority of them feel bad and very self concious about it.

I dont have any sympathy and ahve a little disgust for the people who are massive and are that way out of total laziness and over eating.

BUT

There are a ton of people in the world who have serious medical problems that make them that way. Some bodies dont know how to store things correctly, some have physiology problems, and some are just big people. I have a friend who I know for a fact makes it a point to go for a walk or kind of jog everyday, eats low fat stuff and stays on a weight watching system and yet she is still overweight. Some people are just big...

My mom was always thin when I was growing up. She got cancer in 1989, and the medication she had to take was a steroid. She quickly put on about 80 pounds from it. Because she was sick, she couldn't exactly exercise for hours every week. She had the extra weight for about 4 years, before they came out with a non-steroid medication that could replace hers. Within 6 months of switching, she was back to being thin again.

My point is, as many others have stated, that you can't tell by someone's weight what the cause of it is. I dislike obesity as much as the next person, but I try to not be judgmental, at least until I know the whole story.

I would like to add the i judge people more quickly when I see them at the store buying stuff thats obviously bad for them, while in a driving cart, and yelling at their kids in the most hick voice possible.

I agree that it is sad when someone is overweight because of extenuating circumstances, but 90% of people are fat because they lack the discipline to do something about it. I am sick and tired of people comparing obesity like it is a race or color division; it is not, it is a choice. It is a weakness, not an inherent trait. For those of you that are getting defensive because you are a little heavy and just can't lose weight no matter what you do....... you are not who we are complaining about. You might be the person that is uncomfortable in an airplane seat, but you are not the guy who's a$$ is creeping under the armrests and smelling like a dirty sock and moldy sweat. If that is still you, then get your thyroid checked OR put down that Twinkie and quit lying to yourself and others. People are obese (different than carrying a few extra pounds) for a reason and most of the time it is treatable.

Has anyone else noticed that obesity seems to be a larger problem the further down the social scale you go? Yes, there are obese people in ever social class, but the ratio is inversely proportional to the social scale. Why? Because food is relatively cheap and easy to access. People can comfort themselves with food more cheaply and quickly than they can go to therapy. It is less expensive and requires less effort to eat a twinkie than go to a movie, join a gym or take in a round of golf. If you wanted to argue that obese people are naturally less disciplined or are weaker mentally then maybe that would be comparable to being a minority or having some sort of real, persceptible handicap, but otherwise, it's just a matter of having enough discipline to take care of yourself and stop blaming others for your misery. I'm sure that fat people don't want to be fat. I'm going bald and I don't want to go bald. I don't think that I should be provided with a hat when I go to the zoo to protect my head from the sun. If I need some sort of special arrangement, I'll make it myself.

I am just tired of people who are unable to take responsibility for their personal situations. Everyone has a set of problems and it is our resonsibility to make the most with what we've got. No one else is responsible for making your life more comfortable. There is altogether too many people with a sense of entitlement and not enough sense of responsibiliy.

The women in NAAFA may act like they "love themselves completely the way they are" and are "comfortable with their weight", but if a genie told them that he could make them skinny with no effort or repercussions, I would bet a million dollars that 100% of them would say yes very enthusiastically.
Excuses, excuses...
