The Uniform Vehicle Code states:

Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic ...

Note that this law refers to the "normal" speed of traffic, not the "legal" speed of traffic. The 60 MPH driver in a 55 MPH zone where everybody else is going 65 MPH must move right.
I agree the cut-off/brake check is a poor idea, and isn't likely to get someone to move over, but tailgating for a couple seconds does seem to get the message through to some people.

If the person in the left-most lane is speeding, then that's their problem. However, it doesn't mean that the person in front of them still shouldn't move over if being passed. Passing on the right simply isn't as safe as passing on the left, largely because many people don't expect it.

And if you are in the left lane, and multiple drivers are passing you, then yes, they might be endangering themselves and/or others, but so are you by essentially presenting a moving roadblock. It is not the responsibility, nor the right, of the average citizen to enforce traffic laws.

Are lots of people inconsiderate and dickish while driving? Of course. 95% of the drivers I see around here fail to use turn signals, fly through school zones at crazy speeds, etc. But do I go vigilante and try to FORCE them to follow the rules of the road? No, because it's not my job. Things generally tend to go much more smoothly if certain courtesy rules are followed, regardless of the legality of other actions. Some of those courtesy rules are listed in the OP.

Yeah, brake-checking is definitely a bad idea, as is tail-gating in most situations. Sadly, that's often times the only way to get someone's attention when they've gone off into la-la land and are driving on autopilot. I'll usually (very briefly) flash with my high beams to get the point across if possible, but even that doesn't work very often.

actually in many places you can be ticketed for obstruction of traffic even if you are doing the speed limit.

It's more a crime to piss off 6+ cars behind you then them going 10mph over the limit which has been proven one of the safest speeds to travel at.

Doesn't make speeding any more legal, but please GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY!

I don't understand why this is so hard of a concept to grasp. 'slower traffic stay to the right'. If you're going slower then I am you need to move over so I can pass you. Simple. In fact, in normal conditions the only times you should be in the left lane is when you are passing someone or moving over to pass an emergency vehicle stopped in the breakdown lane.

Haha yeah, it usually results in the same thing happening here, but to me it just seems a safer option than tailgating, so I still do it. Not sure why someone would take personal offense to it, but oh well.

Oh, and for the record, in my experience, the state with the most drivers--per capita--who are guilty of cruising in the left lane is Mississippi. I'm generally ready to rip out my steering wheel by the time I make it through there..

Ugh, I've actually had a couple people honk at me at a stoplight when I'm turning right, and they're turning left from the other side of the intersection, and I go first when the light turns green (no turn arrows).

It's more of a rule of the road, even though there is an underlying law. Stay to the right and let traffic flow, damnit.

SLOWER TRAFFIC STAY RIGHT.

YOU SHOULD ONLY BE IN THE LEFT LANE TO PASS OR AVOID ACCIDENT.

IF TRAFFIC IS FASTER THAN YOU, AND YOU ARE IN LEFT LANE, IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT SPEED THEY ARE GOING, YOU ARE OBLIGATED TO MOVE OVER IF YOU HAVE A REASONABLE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO. IT DOESN"T MATTER IF THEY ARE SPEEDING, YOU ARE NOT TO BE IN THE LEFT LANE UNLESS PASSING.

In Illinois, I believe you have up to 1/4 mile to be in the left lane for a pass otherwise you can be cited.

I usually find it amusing when I pass a slow person (one a two lane road in a passing zone, of course) and the guy seems to either get angry that I passed him or finally realizes that he's going so darned slow. But honestly, I'm thinking it must be the prior, because if the person was consistently going slow throughout multiple speed changes shows that it's more of a choice.

Tailgaters are also kind of annoying. Along with people that pull out in front of you when they really should have waited because they're just going to slow you down. I saw one old guy pull out in front of a crossover SUV the other day and he barely had the room to pull out. The SUV had to put his brakes on almost immediately to avoid rear-ending the guy =\. Worst off, there was no more traffic behind the SUV.

i dont do that either, i just think its a bit too much to get all bent out of shape and try to force someone to change to the right so you can fly by. especially when that person youre trying to push is actually passing cars. just because it isnt as fast as you want doesnt make them in the wrong.

i had a guy literally hold up his hands in the shape of "6-5" when i was passing a semi behind him. he laid on the brakes on a turn going downhill to slow everyone down to 60 to make his point. i almost rear ended him, the prick. but i didnt flip him off, yell at him and follow him to his house and shoot him with toothpicks either.

USING ALL-CAPS MAKES YOUR POINT SO MUCH MORE VALID!!

While I agree that the left lane should be used only for passing, if I'm in the left lane at 70, passing the cars in the center lane...I'm NOT gonna move over into that lane just for those who want to drive faster than me...until I can do so without having to slow down myself. Once I pass the line of cars who are slower than me, yes, I'll move over and let your impatient ass by, but not until then.

If you brake-check me, I'll definitely drop a dime and call the CHP on you for aggressive driving...and, with a bit of luck, I'll see you on the side of the road participating in the "Autograph Exchange Program."

People who brake-check are the ones who are more likely to cause accidents. Those who drive slow in the fast lane may be in the wrong...but it's the morons who insist on driving unsafely to get by them are the ones who may cause the accident, not the slow poke...

here in Kahleeforneeya, you may indeed get a ticket for "Impeding the Flow of Traffic" for driving the posted limit, but if you cause an accident by brake checking, odds are, you'll get a visit to the local cross-bars hotel for negligent driving or worse.

Brilliant move.

Some of you commute daily? Learn to relax. I nearly get run off the road 2 times a day and run into all sorts of idiots. If I was as hell bent as you to prove a point. I'd go through a set of brakes a week and probably have a heart attack and die from the stress.

No worse than the asshole crawling along in the left lane.

I get as irritated as everyone else by this, but really, there's no difference in the level of asshole-ness between driving slow in the fast lane, and intentionally cutting that person off and hitting the brakes? Actively making the problem worse makes that person the bigger asshole by a mile, and they deserve everything coming to them if they cause a crash.

I see a lot of people in this thread that need to exercise some stress management on the road. "Whoo-saaahhh..."

its not "going slower than you are" its going slower than normal traffic. if im passing a group of cars and you think i should be doing it faster, fuck you. ill get over when im past the cars im passing. and if you tailgate, it may take a few seconds longer.

I agree with the OP. People who drive slowly in the left lane deserve to be lined up against the wall and shot. They are absolutely useless to society and the world is a better place without them.

actually im the douchebag driving in one of the lanes to the right. but go ahead and misconstrue it all you want, i dont care. even the right lanes here on us60 are doing 73 usually, so i dont worry about getting to the left much. i just hate all you self important pricks that think you have the right to tell people they have to move just because you want to go faster.

On a 70MPH limit road, people who go 60 in the far right lane pisses me off more than the people who do 70 in the far left lane.

While I'm always conscious of my speed and follow the written and unwritten rules of the highway, I normally don't get pissed if the slower car is at least doing the speed limit. And if I do lapse in mind and do not get over when I'm driving slower, if you get right up on my bumper while we're going 75 down the highway and start flashing your lights, that's a surefire way to get me to set the cruise at the speed limit and stay in my lane. If you treat me like I don't pay taxes for that road, then I'll show you that I can use it however I wish, just like they are. Most of you will disagree with this, but it will not affect me in the slightest.
