I stopped by a Boston store at around 10am. There was no sign of anything happening. After roaming through the store for about 15 minutes, I finally saw some employees with a huge stack of clearance signs that they started to hang. The signs said "entire store up to 20% off", which as far as information content goes, lies somewhere between 'mostly useless' and 'completely useless'. I talked to a couple of people there and this is what I learned:
1) today is the first day of liquidation
2) they don't know when the actual closure is
3) discounts are not marked and will be taken at the register
4) the liquidation company is very efficient and has everything worked out in the computer already.

Aside from the 10% off notebooks that one of the people mentioned, I asked about cameras, blank DVDs, and ps3's (yes, I'm dreaming). Of those, I learned that the DVDs (and all storage media) are 10% off. The I did not get a clear answer on the others, although I'd imagine it would be an even lower markdown than the DVD's (and the guy was still under the illusion that ps3s were going for 1k on eBay). I'll probably try again in a week to see if I can score some cheap component video cables.

which boston area store? There is no Boston Compusa so i willa ssume you mean Brighton or even Woburn or perhaps Natick?

All the stores in MA are going except one in the western part of the state. I hope they have good deals cause I have one near work and another near home to check out.

Yeah - they're taking out the one in Framingham - I can't believe they're keeping one in HOLYOKE, but no where else..like...say near BOSTON???

What a joke........

here's hoping FRY'S will come..oh please...come..please........

Please....I hope Fry's does come here. We need some company that sells more stuff than radioshack, but cheaper than You do it.

When the store closes a liquidator actually BUYS the store, all the CompUSA employee's are fired, and the liquidator hires back a few for almost minimum wage. First thing they do is mark all the prices back up to full list, and bring in a load of junk that didn't sell from other liquidated stores, then the LIQUIDATION SALE starts with a big sign and 10% the marked up prices with a handfull of leader items cheaper. Then 20% after a week or so, down to about 40% then they move on to another location and take what didn't sell with them or unload it via a quick wholesale auction. Almost a total waste of time for any normal consumer.

The liquidator didnt buy all of the merchandise in the store in this round of closings. Compusa still owns the product. The liquidators are just "consultants" and still work with the store management as to what needs to be done. None of the employees were fired - they're still making the same wages. For most of the stores, 1 rep from the liquidation company is working 2 stores - so they spend half their time in 1 store, half in the other....

FYI, Well the Washington Post just indicated that the stores in the greater DC area will close giving Bestbuy and Circuit City control of the area Tyson Corner, Fairfax, Woodbridge are the VA stores closing and in MD - Rockville and Gaithersburg. I'll check this out tomorrow and see whats being discounted and advise.

Figures - we got a TigerDirect a few years ago and now they've killed off CUSA. Other than the local guy and the big boxes our choices are shrinking.

That's just got to be one of the most inane comments ever made. Ever been to a Fry's? Do you realize they sell more than just computer bits? Ought to see the telescopes they sell....fair selection of appliances.......lots more DVDs than Best Buy ever hoped to carry....and LOTS more bits of fluff that's just fun to browse, esp. electronic bits.

But, since you've obviously never been to a Fry's in your life, I guess liking a Fry's makes you live in a magic land with a T-3 line to your house.

^ this has got to be one of most inane forum responses ever made. ever been to the internet?

Just went to the one in Totem Lake, Washington State. The clearance had begun but there obviously wern't any actual good deals. Good thing theres a Frys in Renton.

Checking the one here in Buffalo, NY, they were having 20% off deals on very select items. It ranges from unexciting (cables and whatnot) to decent with 20% of cases and PSU's, which still does not put them on par to prices offered on say, Newegg.

There were also 5% off of every laptop, but again, not exciting.

The Sugar Land Tx CompUSA is closing as well. Spoke with staff today. Nothing excitingly low priced yet. They said prices will be dropping this weekend and next week...will continue to check out hot deals and pass em along...

50% off proccesors and motherboards.

i got an AMD 4200+ X2 for $125 instead of $192 at newegg. not bad. the good core too.

also i got wii play (hard to find anyway) for 30% off.

all xbox360 games were 30% off too.

i think everything in the sore was at least 30% off that wasn't a computer or a monitor.

i was at the WOW in long beach ca.

I believe the Long Beach WOW started its store liquidations last week - as it was one of the 4 stores announced first to close.

I worked at the Buffalo store, the hearsay around the store is that they're just going to discount the peripherals and such, then send any big items to the Rochester store. When I worked there I got the cost price + any mfr rebates, but even with that, the online deals were much better unless it was a massive case/PSU with some hefty shipping charges. Cables had the most markup. I got a $21.99 usb cable for $3.50ish. The only good deals I found was a router, some cables, new games for a few bucks off, and my monitor for ~$25 cheaper than Newegg. I hope fry's buys them out once they slim down and pay off some bills, at last then they'd be in the North East.

I just stopped by the store in King of Prussia, PA. Signs outside say 20% off entire store but all the good stuff, games, tvs, computers, etc. are only 5 or 10% off. I didn't see a single thing worth buying...

I remember the CompUSA store near my place in Torrance, CA closed a few months back-nearly everything in the store was 60% off. I bought about 5 games, a few case mods, and a new headset for half what they were worth. Its sad that they are closing, but then again, this means savings on your part. Definitely worth checking out.

I'm not too sad though-I got a Office Depot, Staples, Officemax, Best Buy, Circuit City, PCMall and a Fry's all within easy driving range.

Correct me if I am wrong, but most if not all of the stores were also former ComputerCity stores that CrapUSA bought out, and I expect the same crappy "liquidation sale" to be only a bargin when they are a week away from actually closing the stores. Other times, it is MSRP - 10-30% which can't match most online places (which is why they are getting rid of the stores in the first place.)

Closest store here was 60 mins away...now it will be 3 hours away. Oh well. No love loss here.
