According to the CompUSA website the Vacaville store is gone. :( The stores shown closest to Vacaville are are about 45 miles away.

Crap my stores on the list

Well, consider yourself lucky.

QFT!!! I have a Microcenter 4 miles from my work. I just wish I had a Fry's. I can only go there when I am in Atlanta on business :(

My store isn't on the list. Just as well, there have been times when a customer or myself has needed something now, not the next day and it's handy to have a Compusa nearby even if they are more expensive.

I visited Framingham just last year... Nice area... I did a network install at the Adesa Auto Auction. I am sure you are familiar with it... It used to be a huge GM plant and is next to a "female only" prison IIRC.

BTW - The COMPUSA there was really small compared to the ones in Minnesota.

Well, I can say I'm sad to see mine in Jackson,MS go. I went there frequently for more obscure stuff I needed to complete some customer work.

However, I rarely went there for myself because I could wait for better deals even after paying shipping. I buy my hard drives at BestBuy because they are ALWAYS cheaper. Also, when BB has a sale, they have the item, not like CompUSA which sent like 1 of each sale item to each store.

CompUSA has had shady sales practices, inept sales & support people, and nothing special price wise for years in my area. Maybe this is what put them out of business in so many locations.

I'd LOVE to see a Fry's come into the area.

They are taking all the ones in very urban areas out. The one at the Oakland Mall gone and the one closest to my house at 75 and Baldwin is gone. These are very populated areas but leaving the one in Lansing open.

I talked to a couple of employees and they are shocked. They were given no reason as to why they are closing or so they said. They are promised 60 more working days and a severance package of something like one weeks pay for every of service for full timers, at least thats what they told me.

As for hot deals there is nothing yet. I just got back from the one at 75 and Baldwin and the liquidatiors were there making copies of price signs. Stuff like 10% off computer acc. and such. Nothing really special yet.

What kind of magical land are you from? Are the streets lined with thinkpads and a quad core in every pot? A t-3 for every home? Some sort of techie wizard of oz?

I stopped by a Boston store at around 10am. There was no sign of anything happening. After roaming through the store for about 15 minutes, I finally saw some employees with a huge stack of clearance signs that they started to hang. The signs said "entire store up to 20% off", which as far as information content goes, lies somewhere between 'mostly useless' and 'completely useless'. I talked to a couple of people there and this is what I learned:
1) today is the first day of liquidation
2) they don't know when the actual closure is
3) discounts are not marked and will be taken at the register
4) the liquidation company is very efficient and has everything worked out in the computer already.

Aside from the 10% off notebooks that one of the people mentioned, I asked about cameras, blank DVDs, and ps3's (yes, I'm dreaming). Of those, I learned that the DVDs (and all storage media) are 10% off. The I did not get a clear answer on the others, although I'd imagine it would be an even lower markdown than the DVD's (and the guy was still under the illusion that ps3s were going for 1k on eBay). I'll probably try again in a week to see if I can score some cheap component video cables.

Nothing at the Arlington, TX store that I could tell. All I could see were the usual overpriced stuff...

This is ridiculous, they dont need 2 stores in NYC. Especially not within 20 blocks of each other. Besides, the BB at Chelsea is way more fun, especially if you go in there wearing khakis and royal blue shirts...

When the store closes a liquidator actually BUYS the store, all the CompUSA employee's are fired, and the liquidator hires back a few for almost minimum wage. First thing they do is mark all the prices back up to full list, and bring in a load of junk that didn't sell from other liquidated stores, then the LIQUIDATION SALE starts with a big sign and 10% the marked up prices with a handfull of leader items cheaper. Then 20% after a week or so, down to about 40% then they move on to another location and take what didn't sell with them or unload it via a quick wholesale auction. Almost a total waste of time for any normal consumer.

That's just got to be one of the most inane comments ever made. Ever been to a Fry's? Do you realize they sell more than just computer bits? Ought to see the telescopes they sell....fair selection of appliances.......lots more DVDs than Best Buy ever hoped to carry....and LOTS more bits of fluff that's just fun to browse, esp. electronic bits.

But, since you've obviously never been to a Fry's in your life, I guess liking a Fry's makes you live in a magic land with a T-3 line to your house.

Went by my closest store (Bryant Irvin location in Fort Worth. In the DFW area, 7 of 9 stores are shutting down). Most stuff wasn't really marked down. The Apple guy told me that Apple computers were 5% off. Mostly I just walked around shaking my head at how unbelievably overpriced their merchandise still is. Every once in a while they had a good sale on a hard drive or something (I remember getting some 250GB drives for $80 a couple of years back), but overall their prices suck, and I'm completely unsurprised that they're having to shutter so many stores.

Did you read the entire post? You have to admit though that having 3 Fry's locations within 10 miles of your home is fairly extreme. And for those without a Fry's nearby (I live in a Fry's-inhabited area now, but I used to live out in the boonies) the stores take on an almost mythical quality. I had read about the deals for YEARS on this forum before I finally went to the one in Las Vegas and bought a new CPU/mobo combo with some of my winnings from the craps tables. Now that I've moved to the DFW area (4 Fry's locations) I visit Fry's regularly. And, last but not least, Firechicken does indeed live in Silicon Valley.

Anyway, no need to be such a jerk in your response. The guy was making a joke.

Just stopped by Princeton NJ store during lunch.

Their liquidation team was busy yellow-tagging all LCD TVs (10% off), Computers (10%) and Notebooks (5%). Rest of the store was not being discounted at the time. I spoke with the manager and he said:

1. All CompUSA and Manufacturer rebates were NOT VALID for purchases made in all closing stored; and
2. Told me to stop by every couple of days to see the prices going down.

Even with 5-10% off, I didn't see anything of interest.
