I am shooting for the longer distance though. I should probably think about the sprint distance. My run times are better the shorter I run. 4 seconds off the WR in the 400 is a lot better than several minutes off the WR in the 5k, let alone the 10k. Thats not to say I cant beat down most people in a 10k, I am just more dominant the shorter the race is.

What sort of strength training do you do? A strong upper body, especially your lats and arms, will really help your swimming.

I'm curious to see how fast your tri time is as I may do one in the future (probably a medium length triathlon though). However, you have a lot more basic leg speed than I do so you have a much better base to work from (my best 400 m is only 56 seconds).

I do a bunch of push-ups when I get up in the mornings, and I also have a pull-up workout I do in the afternoons after my run. Google "Armstrong pull-up", I follow that guide to a T.

I am excited to see how I do as well. I'm stoked to try something new. Being out of college, it gets old smacking down 50 year old people in random road races.

BTW if anyone lives in the Aurora/Oswego/Naperville/Montgomery area of IL and wants to go for a run, hit me up.

Currently in hard-core mode for the '10 Chicago Triathlon, looking to score some prize money. :)
How many tris have you done? Your run times are ridiculous.

A lot of fast runners here. A couple of the other runners in this thread should check out triathlons. I always do quite well in the placing in the sprint tris and my run times are minutes slower than some other 5k times in this thread.

The pain is savage and it would take A LOT of training to convert over and I'd lose a lot of power and strength that I'm not willing to give up.

You would lose a lot converting over. The pain gets a lot, lot better though. As a kid/teen who used to run to lose weight I could never imagine running long distances as I hated it all, but in time as you build distance any given mile becomes so much easier than it used to be. Or you just get used to it more, but in any case I don't think an endurance athlete necessarily can tolerate more pain than a tough weight lifter. Doing a high-rep set of squats until your legs are wobbling is as painful as anything else I've ever encountered.

Yes lots of good runners here!

Oh dont' know. For me I've never felt entirely comfortable with the pain of running distance. I can run short sprints a lot better but then thats what I use to do and again it was savage but at least it was over in 30seconds tops!

I'd gradually get use to it but it's a lot of effort and my heart just isn't in it as I can't be f0cked :p I can skip a minute on and off for 5 rounds, thats pretty savage also.

Doing high rep is prefered over running 1-2miles :p Easier for me to handle but yeah it hurts but it's something I'm use to unlike running. I wonder if I'll change when I'm older? I'd be very suprised if I get in to running like that. I'd rather just hit the gym and pound it or go to Gymnastics.

What distances did you compete in at college?

I ran XC, which were 8k races. ~5 miles.

In track I focused on the 800, the 400, and Javelin.

*edit*

Remembered a funny story. My team was at a huge meet, roughly 30 teams or so. At the end of the meet was a throwers 4x400 relay. The winning relay team won a trophy, as well as a giant chocolate cake. Being that I technically was a thrower in the meet, having done the javelin, I was eligible to race in it. I was the anchor leg :p

My team was 3 huge shot/disc guys and me. The race starts and every school has these big ass shot put guys huffing and puffing their way around the track. As the 3rd leg was coming in with the baton, I stepped onto the track. I got some weird looks, as everyone around me was at least 100 pounds heavier. We were pretty far out of 1st place, roughly 20 seconds or so. I got the baton and took off.

I was pretty much stuck in lane 3 the whole way around, as I was passing these shot putters faster than I could count. Before I knew it I was in the lead coming down the home stretch and easily won. I ran something like 48.XX, not bad for lane 3 the whole way :p

A few of the teams were pretty pissed off, especially the second place team. They were complaining to the officials, and yelling "cheaters!!!" at my team. The officials basically said, "well, he threw in the meet, so he is eligible to run in the throwers relay".

owned. Chocolate cake ++

haha love that idea, throwers 4x400 relay! They should do more of that man! Love doing comps :)

Why not join a local track team or you've had enough of that now?

The Tri-athlons seems like the way forwards for you!

LOL nice!

Just be thankful those other throwers didn't decide to use you as a javelin after!

That looks like a solid program, and yea, I agree it's always good to find a new challenge.

Believe me though, it's all well and good to spank the middle-agers over 10k or less, but I've had a few of them kick my ass over the marathon .

8 Years of HS/college track has me a little burnt out on track. Plus, having to pay an entry fee to run 40 something seconds in a track meet is lame. I want to try and focus on something new now.

Funny story nick. :D

I started off running with the intention of doing triathlons, but the cost of entry into triathlons in the north is too high. With my family situation being what it is I just can't afford all the gear and the entry fees. So now I just run and love it.

I'm not much of a weight lifter (I was when I was in the Navy) so my PB list is gonna look pretty lame to you guys.

Perfect pushups: 122 consecutive

Pull-ups: 17 consecutive

5K: 20:55

10K: 42:xx (I forgot the seconds)

13.1M: 1:35:xx (I forgot the seconds)

Basically, as I'm a new competitive runner every longer event I do is a PR. LOL Next year I'll set PRs in the marathon, the 50K, and the 50M.

It's tough man :( Got to do the conditioning high reps and medium reps before you should go heavy. I was lucky and didn't do any really serious stuff before I got a coach and learnt what the hell to do in the gym. I trained randomly for 18months on my own when I was 15-16.5 doing stuff. I shudder to think what stuff I was doing, but at least I didn't get injured

19/10/09 : Max Back Squat Session after the Russian Squat Routine

Dynamic stretches

Back Squat
bar x 6
bar x 6
65kg x 4reps
105kg x 2reps
135kg x 2reps
155kg x 1rep : felt okay, didn't feel light, didn't feel as light as last week, 5.5hrs sleep the night before, not ideal
175kg x 1rep : okay, didn't feel light
185kg x 1rep : didn't feel light as last week

195kg x 1rep : +8kg PB, felt great out of the rack, really focused on staying tight after unracking the bar, screaming out of the rack, the extra adrenaline must have been pumping, just felt invincible out of the rack, felt light on the back when I stood up before I went down, felt sick,
200kg x 1rep : +13kg PB, again screaming out of the rack, the bar felt light on the back and just felt it was mine to take, but WTF at the small step forwards? I felt I was moving forwards a lot more then in the video
201kg x 1rep + 14kg PB wanted to get it after the kind of weird step on 200kg, felt sick to do it :D f0cking happy!

+7.49% in 8 weeks of squats.

Before I did 200Kg I wasn't sure I would be able to do it, looks like the Russian Squat Routine worked for me. :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cocMMTB-tM

I'll test again on Wednesday, aiming for 203kg :p then on to some real focused lifting.

Push Ups : chest to floor, paused at arm lock out
45reps
40reps

Damn nick, I knew you were fast but I didn't know you were THAT fast. Although 47.xx 400 and 1:51 800... I think you had a sub 1:50 in you :)

I regret not starting track until my junior year of HS... and not being able to run in college. Hard to juggle engineering with running.

For a nerd site we got some pretty beastly and/or fast people here.

I think the best reaction I get is when someone thinks I was on some football team or in the military and then I told them I was in the band in high school and I'm a computer nerd. Their faces are priceless! :D

My PB's (1R max):
Bench: 280lbs
Squat: 262lbs
DL: 405lbs
BB Curl: 104lbs
Shoulder Overhead Press: 153lbs

My 10K and 1/2 marathon times were this year. I haven't tried to set a PR in a marathon in over a year...so I expect my time will improve a bit there...just don't have the time needed with my work schedule for properly training for a marathon right now.

Exactly. Doesn't matter what you do or your background. If you train consistently and hard you'll lift a decent chunk of weight.

Snatch
bar work
110 x gash, not quite hitting the sweet spot and the bar being a bit too behind, need to stay over it more
110 x gash
110 x gash, ring rusty
110 x 1 : better
118 x 1 : sweet + 1kg training PB, +2kg on comp PB
120 x 0 ; not quite here, need to stay more upright
120 x 0 ; in front, battered now

C&J
130 x 1 ; Clean felt a bit rough, collapsed quite a bit when receiving but got up, better Jerk
140 x 0 : Jerk needs work
148 x 0 : didn't get the bounce well
148 x 0 : wtf @ losing my right grip and losing the Clean when reshuffling my grip?! First for me...gash

Front Squats
170kg x 1 : sweet! +10kg PB, who said I couldn't improve my front squat after the Russian Back Squat routine? Probably edge 173kg without all the OLifts before hand

Sweet Snatch PB 118 and Front Squat 170kg but the C&J was lacking

That's why you're so freaking fast! You're a fast-twitch machine! Our 5K, 10K and hopefully marathon PRs are pretty similar, but there is no way I could come close to any of your PRs for any distance under that! Mine:

mile: 4:59
2 mile: 10:36
5K: 16:40
8K: 27:32
half marathon: 1:17:07
marathon: ask me in 10 days :D

Guess I can officially say that my marathon PR is 2:48:15 now :D
