I am shooting for the longer distance though. I should probably think about the sprint distance. My run times are better the shorter I run. 4 seconds off the WR in the 400 is a lot better than several minutes off the WR in the 5k, let alone the 10k. Thats not to say I cant beat down most people in a 10k, I am just more dominant the shorter the race is.
What sort of strength training do you do? A strong upper body, especially your lats and arms, will really help your swimming.
I'm curious to see how fast your tri time is as I may do one in the future (probably a medium length triathlon though). However, you have a lot more basic leg speed than I do so you have a much better base to work from (my best 400 m is only 56 seconds).
