Oh god, another reason for Jet fans to snivel as if having a shitty team wasn't enough.

I think that the NFL should make an example out of them....IMO its a clear violation of the rules, especially if the RF interference was induced by the Pats! Strip them of draft picks or lower their salary cap for the next year(s).

This is such BS. The goal is to guess what they are going to do and counteract that. If they are stupid enough to 'broadcast' those in the clear and not change the 'encryption', shame on the Jets. I say stripe the Jets of a pick and a game for being that stupid. Go Pats

//Fins fan, don't like either of them. Still PO'ed at the Jets for what they did to Cal Dixon (a long time ago for most of you here).

A 4th round draft pick would suffice. Maybe they could give it to the Jets, lord knows they could use it.

While I can understand rooting for you team, I have played competitive sports. Surely not on this level, but sport is sport. You WILL make every attempt to win, you WILL constantly hit the weakest link. You will use every thing you have to win, within the rules of the game

Because if you win by breaking the rules, it isn't a win IMHO. Anybody who has played competively understands this.

Judgement calls on the field are one thing, flat out cheating and information gathering are completely different. Can you imagine what you could do with information that indicate how the defense is lining up????

Just FYI, Peter King said the Colts are known to do the same thing the Pats were caught doing Spidey ;) Not that it makes what the Pats did okay, but we're all deluding ourselves if we don't believe this is happening all over the place.

Proof that they recorded defensive signals? Oh wait, you dont have any.

Dont make claims, that you cant back up.

That wouldnt do anything to them. They only used a 1st and 2nd round this year.

The punishment would fit the crime. I know some of you haters would like to see them crippled but I doubt the League is going to go overboard on this. They will set an example and losing any draft pick is pretty serious, even if they don't use the pick they can always trade it for a player.

Agreed. Past league violations (Broncos spring to mind immediately) have resulted in the loss of a draft pick. I think what the Pats did is on par with the Broncos (for those that don't remember, the Broncos messed around with the salary cap in Elway's final year), therefore the loss of a draft pick I think is appropriate.

Wrong, it's not a "non-issue", and the commish is about to kindly inform the Pats of that fact. They can indeed suspend the coaches, they can reverse the outcome of the game, they can take away draft picks, they can levy fines etc. We'll be able to judge the seriousness of the offense by what the commish does.....

You may not think it's a big deal, but if it's against the rules of the league and gives one team an advantage, then it's cheating. Plain and simple.

Killing their draft advantage has been used before and seems just. Not because the Pats broke a rule, but because it became such a big issue in the media.

Stop watching ESPN, their motive is only to bring you entertainment, not the real deal behind this. Turn on your local AM sports station and wait for the old football turned radio show hosts explain it in their terms or wait for them to bring a current NFL player on the show to interview about this issue. You?ll find that video recording is actually no big deal simply because the rest of the game is recorded anyway. Brad Culpepper, a former Buc down here in Tampa spoke on the matter and when asked about the ethicality behind taping the game he said ?bah, no big deal, cmon?? and it sounds like that?s the general attitude towards this. If you look into it, you?ll also find that many times when players are traded all the information they know about their former team is given up for the advantage of his new team, you?ll also find that its not uncommon for coaches and other higher ups to give the peon staff sitting on the sidelines the job of watching across the field to try and decipher play calls. You don?t think they write what they find out down? Same thing.

I?ll guarantee this is not the first time it has happened and simply will not be the last. The team that are more discrete about trying to read play calls are not going to change the way they do business, it will keep going on.

Stealing signs is not against the rules and every team in the league does it. The only thing they did wrong was video tape the signs. Saying that they cheated is pushing it IMO. They are guilty of recording signs, not stealing them.

Agreed.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2696227 (Miami stealing signs against New England, NFL says Miami did no wrong).

Obviously the video taping was against league rules, and it sounds like they'll be punished. Goodell sounds like he means business when it comes to breaking the rules, so his punishment will probably not be light (look at all the Personal Conduct issues this past off-season).

Oh, btw, Belichik is holding a press conference in a few minutes ...

Its going to be interesting to see how Goodell reacts. He came down hard on player conduct. What will he do when its management? Granted what the players did was really fvcked up.

This would explain how a 7th round draft pick that didn't even start at Michigan could become such a dominant QB. And why he still has to wear his rookie playbook wristband. When you know what's coming, you basically have to be able to hear "run play #4" in your headset, pass credibly and boom, you're a star.

A fair punishment would be loss of the Jets game (sets the precedent that if you cheat during a game, you lose that game), loss of at least both 1st round draft picks (all day 1 picks would be nice, but maybe unrealistic), bigtime suspension of whoever the scapegoat is that's offered up (it probably won't be Belicheck).

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the extra radio equipment that was also found at the game. The Patriots couldn't explain that one. They may have been listening in on the Jet's offensive signals, too.

Link to story

The ESPN.com report also states that the league is reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday's game and that the team "did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup." In other words, besides watching and taping the coaches, the Patriots also may have been listening in.

PaulNECheatriotsFan, do you have any proof of the Colts "doing the same thing"? Does King? Do you even have a link to show that King ever said that? Probably not, because like all these other Pats apologists telling us how much of a non-issue this is, you're full of it. You and the Patriots organization deserve each other.

If the Colts did something like this I'd be embarrassed and disappointed in my team, and you can bet the farm, tractor, and state fair prize pig (that's what we talk like here in Hicktown, IN, right?) that Pats fans would be screaming "CHEATERS!!!" at the top of their lungs with everyone else.

Goodell has them by the balls. I hope he has enough balls of his own to squeeze.

I hope Pats get punished, and punished hard. Yeah, every team may do it (just like steriods in baseball and other sports), but if you get caught, you must pay for it. Hopefully, there are suspensions..

No, they should suspend the coach for letting this crap happen on his watch.

edit: do some homework, Brady started for two years at Michigan. Doesn't every QB have an armband with plays on it?

During his first full year as starter, he set Michigan records for most pass attempts (350) and completions in a season (214).[9] Brady was All-Big Ten both seasons and team captain his senior year. The Wolverines won 20 of 25 games when he started and shared the Big Ten Conference title in 1998. Brady capped that season off with a win over Arkansas in the Citrus Bowl. In the 1999 season, Brady led Michigan to an overtime win in the Orange Bowl over Alabama, throwing for 369 yards and four touchdowns.

Your argument makes no sense. The tape was taken in the first quarter of the game. It had no impact on the Patriots / Jets game itself. The outcome of that game was NOT affected by this incident. (How could it be if the tape was taken in the first quarter?)

Second, the patriots were found to have been videotaping the Jets sending in defensive signals. That's it. Everything else is just a rumor at this point. The other points people have raised, namely that 'gamesmanship' or whatever, is a big part of football is true to a point. Teams constantly try to get copies of playbooks, understand calls, etc. That's why Reche Caldwell was 'working out' for the Jets last week - they wanted the dirt on the Patriots' playbook. Teams hire all sorts of people to write down signals, observe them with binoculars, etc. The point I'm trying to make is that the Patriots violated league policy and should be punished. NFL fans should wake up to the fact that their violation isn't that much worse than what teams already do. Yes, they got caught. Yes, punish them.

Third, there is no precedent for anything more than losing draft picks. In previous incidents of league infractions, teams have lost a draft pick in the upcoming draft. There is no precedent or reason to issue suspensions or reverse the outcome of games. We're talking events that make videotaping play signals seem pretty mild.

The worst punishment for the Patriots, by far, is the bad press this situation has generated. The league can't do much worse than that.

That's probably what will happen. BTW, this incident had nothing to do with the shellacking the Pats gave the Jets as the tape was confiscated before the Pats staff could use it. Just imagine how bad they would have beaten the pathetic Jets if they had gotten it.

Fitting punishment would be to force them to use Matt Millen as their GM for the next 5 years :)
