I think it was more of a case of that selective interpretation where when Trump says 10 things, 5 of which someone likes and 5 of which they don't like, that individual would decide Trump didn't mean the ones they didn't like.Old dotard Trump could never comprehend the costs his tariffs will impose on the American people.
His campaign slogan was effectively "Make prices higher again" and the American voters largely agreed.
Here comes the pain.
I remember seeing this with immigration. A reporter was talking to some Trump supporting farmer where half of his workers are undocumented and the reporter was like 'doesn't this worry you as it would destroy your business?' to which the farmer answered 'well he won't really do it.'
I think a significant portion of America thinks either he won't do it or they won't drive up prices. (although if they won't drive up prices then there's no point as that's the goal of tariffs)
