Oh man, I just had a brilliant idea. Sell face hugger masks. Let's the dipshits feel like they're protesting wearing a mask by actually wearing a mask.

I think there's some truth to that. And there's a strong "fuck the government" lean in America to begin with. And ignorance, and just, 'merica!

Even through the stupidity, I do think this highlights a failing. We should have every year been putting out information about washing your hands, wearing a mask if you're showing symptoms (especially respiratory ones like cough/sneeze), so that it wasn't like all of a sudden the government was "wear a mask or else" as that does spook people and makes it easy for their ignorance to take over.

Its really hard for people to understand the ramifications for their actions, let alone when its something that's nigh invisible to them. I feel like this is something that technology will help with. Imagine AR visors that can show how cough/sneeze sprays germs. And while it could be simulated some, we have sensors that could actually show exactly what it would be like (where it could mix lidar, thermal, and some others to highlight it).

Ultimately, I think it boils down to the two M's, the message and the misinformation. In regard to the message, I think there are some that are willing to ignore calls for proactive measures simply because it's not in their sort of language. These are the same sort of folk that I run into that voted for Donald Trump because they wanted someone that "wasn't like a politician". These sort of folk hate being talked to in that robotic, political fashion. In regard to misinformation, I think that sort of speaks for itself. People hear remarks like "it's just like the flu" or "the flu kills more", and they just sort of go with it. I even had my mom try to suggest some conspiracy theory that Bill Gates was trying to strike it rich with the vaccine. So, with the a message not tailored to people, you won't even get them to listen, and with misinformation, you'll get them to doubt. With one of those, you're likely to get people to ignore the request, and with both, I'd say you're pretty much guaranteed.

Oh definitely.

I don't think the message was robotic (or at least I've seen quite a few people that can articulate this stuff in a manner that gives them weight while not instilling fear), and definitely it doesn't have to be, but there was a lot of mixed messaging going on ("don't bother with masks" "wear masks NOW" "only some masks work" "masks aren't about preventing you from getting it but from you spreading it").

That was kinda my point, we should have already been telling people to do this stuff because of the flu and other seasonal illnesses. And then weigh that against the imperfect but far from worthless flu vaccine. I think it would have helped (and would have been helping with the flu), while getting people to understand what vaccines really offer. Which we've been very fortunate that we haven't had another particularly devastating strain of the flu, but its been a concern. But that too contribute to this as people recall the concern about Avian flu and others, and then people go "it didn't impact me at all" and think its all just hype.

If I were to dream up a Bill Gates conspiracy it'd be that he created this so that the rest of the world could understand what third world countries that are struggling to deal with diseases experience every year. I've pointed out in other threads that Malaria every year hits like this in some areas of the world. Over 200million get it and hundreds of thousands die from it every year. That's not to downplay COVID19, but rather to just highlight that what seems like a nightmare, a large portion of the world lives it every single year.

I was wondering about the same thing when he visited the mask factory without a mask. If they did not throw out the run of the floor, they would be negligent.

WHO reversed their stupid course on masks. They are now recommending them to be worn in public, well, at least by elderly and vulnerable people.

Their position has been only for hc workers, or those directly dealing with the ill.

Gotta say, WHO has been pretty disappointing during all this.

Seriously, linking the Post? Come on. At some point some of you have to take some responsibility for your role in things.

This isn't really much of a change since they're still actually standing by what they said before, but qualifying situations where they'd have pretty specific recommendations for mask use.

They recommend wearing a mask when social distancing isn't possible (meaning they're still saying that's more important than a mask). They're also saying that the one group should be wearing masks if they're medical grade masks (otherwise its likely doing jack shit to prevent them from catching it, and they point out they were worried before about run on masks preventing health care workers that need them more than anyone from being able to get them). Plus they explain proper mask use, which I'd guess very few people adhere to, and so its potentially possible that masks might not do all that much if you aren't also washing your hands and taking other precautions (which has been their point all along). Do you know of anyone that washes their hands every time immediately before touching the mask and immediate after touching the mask? What about putting it on? I know that I've had to adjust basically every mask I've put on which involved me touching parts of my face, and even makes it more likely for me to touch near my eyes.

Plus with more testing they've shown more in depth about the materials for the masks and come up with better recommendations on what to do for non-medical masks.

As has been heir point with not recommending masks is that they know it'll give people a false sense of security and so they'll be more likely to eschew social distancing, which will make things worse. Which is why they pushed social distancing more than mask use.

There's another point most miss regarding any face mask for coronavirus: by using one, you won't be touching your mouth or nose because both are covered by the mask, thus it's much less likely you'll infect yourself via touching contaminated surfaces.

It's perfectly normal for anyone to touch their own mouth / nose involuntarily and the mask serves as a reminder NOT to touch those areas.

Another aspect most people miss:

- face masks aren't 100% effective, even those N95 ones
- social distancing isn't 100% effective but helps a great deal
- hand washing isn't 100% effective because you can touch a contaminated spot AFTER washing you hands and infect yourself that way

HOWEVER, combine all three and you'll have something that's over 99% effective in protecting yourself:

- social distancing helps to cover the % face masks don't cover
- face masks help by making sure you don't touch your mouth / nose with your hands, in case you may have touched some place that was contaminated
- by washing hands you make sure you don't have virus literally on your hands and even if you touch a contaminated surface, you won't infect yourself so long as you're using a mask

And this works just as well in reverse. Suppose you're infected with no symptoms:

- face masks aren't 100% effective, even those N95 ones, so they can still let virus slip through the mask
- social distancing isn't 100% effective but helps a great deal forcing the virus to be able to travel a longer distance in order to succeed in infecting someone
- hand washing isn't 100% effective because you can infect someone via a surface if you touch your mouth / nose AFTER washing

HOWEVER, combine all three and you'll have something that's over 99% effective in protecting others:

- social distancing helps by making sure virus that manage to slip through the mask can't travel long enough to be able to infect others
- face masks help by not letting the virus in to your hands, as you can't touch your mouth / nose directly because of the mask
- by washing hands you make sure you don't have your infection literally on your hands so that you don't contaminate surfaces

This is more then just an intelligence of the people question. The public cannot research their own advice when it comes from protecting against COVID. We all rely on government sources that includes your own doctor. In particular where are these people getting the idea we don't need masks in this type of situation??

the odds of Trump catching the coronavirus have to be going up significantly with all these rallies. i'm not going to lie, it would be hilarious if he got it between now and the election.
