I shot a gun for the first time in my life last weekend

Sensitivity? Was one of her younger siblings killed by a gun or something? If not, then the only reason it would be a "sensitive" issue is irrational.

Does one need a FOID to go shooting at the range?

Firearm Owners ID. I believe you just need to be accompanied by the owner of said gun you will be shooting.

Wrong. All you need is, is a drivers license, unless you live in Kaliforniastan and possibly NY and a few other states
Wrong again .
Don't know much about California's gun laws other than what you've been told , huh?
To rent a pistol at a range you need to be 18 and with driver's license.

Thought it was 21 to shoot a handgun in CA? I may be wrong, but I've definitely gone to the range with people and all you need is a driver's license.

Stupid CA haters FTL.

i'm pretty sure you can shoot a handgun at any age (may be different at a range), you just have to be 21 or older to purchase one from a gun shop or get your CCW permit.

Every single one of my rifles and handguns are loaded and the ammo is nearby and readily accessable, just in case.

I even have a couple of CS grenades that may come in handy right there with the stuff. :D

Wow, you must really live in fear or in a crap neighborhood. I didn't think Oregon was a bad place to live and had a low crime rate. I can't imagine what kind of stuff you'd have in your home if you lived in say NYC.

Everyone is saying that there is no reason for gun ownership to be a sensitive issue. Don't argue about it to me, Im not saying it should be a sensitive issue at all. But the fact is that it is, and everyone knows it. Hell, you don't have to look farther than ATOT to realize that; I cant count the number of heated gun/anti-gun threads we've had here in the last three years.

And for the record, one of my gf's best friend's brother was killed by a gun at a young age. He found his father's gun and ended up shooting himself. I just want to put that out there, but regardless if that happened or not, it's still a touchy subject.

Oh, and please do not turn this thread into a "well the father of the boy should have locked the gun up" or "the boy was an idiot" or "people kill people, guns dont kill people."

Nope, I live in an area with zero crime, and my closest neighbor is almost a mile away. I love where I life.

I have that stuff all ready to go because I can.

This is exactly why dual compartment gun safes are so valuable. You need your gun to shoot people, but if we're talking about people living in a safe area with kids, there's little reason short of paranoia not to have a gun safe, even if it's not as fancy as a dual-compartment. If the gun is a toy (for plinking etc), or for hunting, and you have no need to keep it readily accessible, don't keep it accessible.

If you do have kids and would still like quick access to a loaded handgun get one of these:Gun Vault

I sure as shit wouldn't want to be fumbling with a combo lock in the dark after just waking up to see if someone has broken into my home.

The very first gun I fired was a M16 at an Army training camp.

Guns are like water. They can either save a life or take one. It probably has "saved" me a couple of times.

That's pretty sweet.. until the batteries run out ;) Seriously though, I like it, now we can be paranoid about theives without being paranoid about kids. They didn't even look that expensive, $130 for a small one, I didn't look at the full-size.

Have any real world feedback/experience on the biometric ones? That would be my choice.

I've never used the biometric one. A friend back home had the regular model and it worked perfectly, takes 2 seconds to open.

i thought about getting one of these (although at this point, i just need a regular full size gun safe) and had thought about the batteries running out as well. a break in would be a ***** time to find out they died.

LOL! Prepared for what? Red Dawn and the invasion of Soviets? I can understand you gun lovers thinking that you need to have a gun, but to have a loaded gun in every room along with grenades is just bizarre. You're like alcoholics who make sure there is a bottle in reach at all times, except in this case you're just replacing the bottle with a gun.

I learned that you shouldn't live in flood zones sitting in hurricane targets filled with dirt-poor crackheads and dealers. In other words, it's better to have a brain than to compensate for your lack thereof with paranoia and a weapon.

When the civilization fails where I live, we'll all have a fun little parade.

Katrina isn't a possibility where I am, but if we are going to talk about "learning" from it, you learned the wrong thing. Having everyone hide in their homes and arm themselves isn't the answer to the problem that was Katrina. It's unfortunate that people think that, because it will only slow down those that wish to address the real problem.

I didn't have a gun loaded in every room but my two pistols, 2 shotguns (a Remington 870 I use for hunting and a Mossberg 500 12 ga. with ATI combat stock, heat shield, ghost rings, etc... basically a "combat" shotgun) and my two "assault rifles" sure came in handy.

It was the difference between having food and water and not having food and water (not to mention possibly being shot while your food and water was stolen). I really didn't think of it like this before. Guns where more of a hobby than anything until all hell broke loose. The fact of the matter is, the bad guys don't bother with the people that can and will defend their selves even when the bad guys outnumber and outgun the people defending their home/neighborhood. There are too many defenseless people/homes for them to even think of bothering with a real confrontation.

That sounds about right.

Any one of my firearms is worth more than the lives of those who would take them from me or who say I should not have them. That is why I keep them loaded and ready to go.
