I shot a gun for the first time in my life last weekend

I went to a shooting range with a few buddies last weekend and we shot a few handguns. This was my first time picking up a gun. Wow, thats all I have to say. It was such an exhilarating experience. I started off with a small revolver (don't know what kind). Then I worked my way up to a Beretta 9mm, and then I shot my buddy's glock 45. I want to go back ASAP and shoot some more.

My gf, as anti-gun as she is, didnt have a problem with me going, just as long as I never consider owning one.

***UPDATE 08/13/07***
I took the girlfriend to the range with me on Saturday morning. I don't remember what type of gun they gave her to shoot. It was her first time shooting and my second time. They gave her a small revolver; it looked and shot like a cap gun. I practiced with a glock 45. My aim and accuracy is horrible, in fact, my gf shot better than I did. Like I said before, this was my second time shooting, and it was just as much fun as it was the first time. Also, as I previously mentioned in this thread, the gf is very anti gun, but she comprised with me and agreed to come with me and shoot. I was very happy about that.

Now, lately, I really do want to purchase a gun. Renting guns and equipment is expensive. I blew almost $100 on Saturday and about $75 the time before. It won't happen though. Some of you may call me whipped, but it's just not something that can be compromised on if one of the people in the party is uncomfortable with it. Maybe in the future though, she may ease up about the idea as she did with coming to the range and shooting.

I have never shot a gun, and don't intend to. One time I tried a 9mm handgun, but I was shaking soo bad, my buddy took it away. I'm glad you had a good time.

I'd have to agree, next time ask her if she wants to go too.

Well, we're a little more serious than just a boyfriend/girlfriend thing. We'll be getting engaged within the next six months. The way I see it, gun ownership is such a sensitive subject, and for it to work in a household, all parties need to be comfortable with the idea of owning one. In our case, she's does not like the idea of owning a gun at all, where as I don't have a problem with it either way. The middle ground is that we don't own one. I think thats a fair compromise to consider her feelings.

Firearm Owners ID. I believe you just need to be accompanied by the owner of said gun you will be shooting.

Oh wait, you're a lifer... Enough said :Q

Edit: Nevermind. GF != Wife. If it was a wife the above statement would hold. Nothing to see here.

Actually, I will be taking her with me next time I go. She is open to the idea of trying it out. Who knows, maybe one day, she will be comfortable with the idea of having a gun in the house, but at this point she isnt.

As what KK said above you - she's probably never had experience with one. Take her there and let her shoot. If she's worried about safety, a kid finding it - there's gun safes, trigger locks, etc. But it's an enjoyable experience - I've always enjoyed firing a firearm. But glad you enjoyed the experience

Many places will let you rent. In DE we don't even have any kind of firearm id card. When I purchased my first gun it was rather scary that I just had to show a few forms of id and fill out a simple form. No waiting period, no id card...15 minutes and I legally walked out with a gun.

Wrong. All you need is, is a drivers license, unless you live in Kaliforniastan and possibly NY and a few other states

actually, it depends on the state. here in IL you can't even touch a gun without an FOID (if you're a resident)

FOID is a purely IL invention. A FOID card is not required to go shooting at a range.

No waiting period? Crap, the one here in IL is like 2 or 3 days!

As for having needing one to shoot at a range, I'm sure ranges differ on rules but the one I go to doesn't let you rent guns or ammunition. The legal owner of the gun must be present and have his FOID with him, but you don't need to have a FOID.

If you want her to enjoy it, I highly recommend not starting her off with a .454 Casull. :D Ease her into it with something that isn't going to sour her right away. If there is a .22 available, that would be excellent. Otherwise, do start out with a smaller caliber so as to best preserve any chance of her enjoying the experience.

Why is that scary? I can buy knives, bow and arrows, javalins, axes, chainsaws, all sorts of "deadly" weapons, and not even have to show ID. Believe it or not, guns aren't just for killing people.
The only common weapon that's sole purpose is to kill people is the sword, but I can still get those on ebay.

You can shake from nerves. First time I shot a deer I was shaking like crazy I had to take a couple deep breaths cause the shotgun was bouncing so much I couldn't keep the sights aligned.
