I don't know man. Compare today's T series to the 4:3 ones ten years ago. Obviously the hardware is far faster now, but the IBMs just felt beefier, higher quality.

And the keyboards. Oh god, the keyboards.

They're not. You're just looking for an excuse that can support your presumption.

The T420 is just as solid as any older IBM ThinkPad. The keyboard is also the same as its ever been.

I just bought a disposable HP laptop: quad-core A8, 6GB of DDR3, 650GB drive, discrete graphic Radeon 6620g, Win7 pro for $579.
Oh yeah, this http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/se...computer_store

Has 4 USB ports (2 USB3), HDMI out, DVD-Multi, 2 separate headphone jacks, fingerprint scanner, brushed aluminum body... I mean... yeah... Surprisingly, it doesn't look like turd, like how many people say it would resemble.

I'm brand neutral. I'll use and/or like products from different companies (Windows Phone and Zune from Microsoft, the iPad and Macbook Air from Apple).

Apple doesn't make overpriced junk; there really is a quality benefit (especially when it comes to physical build/case quality) from most Apple products like the Macbooks. Whether it is worth the premium price and difference versus other brands is for the individual consumer to decide. Personally, I don't pay the premium as I go for value brands (i.e. most bang for the buck).

One thing I will say, though, is that some people (I guess you could call them "hipsters", though really it's more accurate for this situation to call them Apple enthusiasts/zealots) over estimate the quality of Macs. They are better quality than most brands in their general price range or below, but the internals aren't significantly better. That is to say, I see plenty of Macbooks that "die" because of component/hardware failure, just like I see of Dells, Sonys (Sony is terrible in my experience, btw - their laptops look pretty, but tend to have issues), HPs, etc.

But Apple is better than average in terms of quality and performance.

Sony Vaio Z?

Sony Vaio's are for the person who wants something with Apple pricing (expensive) but doesn't want an actual Apple product. They have crummy keyboards and I hate the track pads, but they have the overall best build quality for a Windows laptop by far. Sony's pricing is absolutely nuts though.

I never said it was $500 cheaper, that was another poster.

Actually my x220 was the same price as the base MBP 13 but had much better specs which is why I said it was a better value. The Intel SSD alone put's it in a different league compared to the MBP 13.

The difference is that you can find good sales on non-Apple brands. As far as I know, Apple products never go on sale... you're always paying full price.

Luxury products don't typically go on sale, when's the last time you heard an add on the radio for the BMW dealership having a "$5,000 off new 735i's" If luxury shit went on sale it would sort of conflict with the fact it's luxurious. Swatch watches can always be found on a sale somewhere, Rolexes? not so much.

My MBA had an MSRP of $1299. I got it on sale at Best Buy for $1099.

MacMall/ClubMac also discounts to the pubic, usually you can get the student price plus they throw in freebies in a bundle.

My wife's MBP was $1099 as well with parallels, a decent bag, a printer we didn't take, a nice package of software, and a few other things.

Macs are in no way 'overpriced junk'. Overpriced, maybe. But junk? No way. The OS is a different story, but build quality, display, etc.. great stuff.
My beef is the way the company is ran, market manipulation, I think they're overpriced, they sue anyone and everyone if they can - yet have fought numerous complaints by smaller companies who said Apple is violating their patents, ofc they couldn't fight such a rich legal savvy company and were defeated. Total hypocrites. Then you have all the hipster douches who, while doesn't have anything to do with the company, I can't help but dislike apple more because of them... etc... etc.. etc...

I personally love my Thinkpad. I don't think I'll want to buy any of the other major brands. Unless they have similar build quality ofc..

c) premium workmanship costs more

Too bad that cost goes out the window when you consider it's being made by Chinese children who aren't being paid jack squat.

Apple products are simplified for the "common people" aka the stupid, the sheeple.
This means they are more proprietary, less powerful, less sophisticated, and less feature rich.

Paying more for less features = overpriced.

Of course it's products are overpriced, and the stockbrokers realize that. Apple's stock price isn't sky high because they're selling stuff with low margins, it's like that because they've consistently been able to convince people they should pay a hefty premium for their products.

less features? LOLS, one of the beautiful things about OSX is a n00b can pretty much pick it up real quick, but a super user can find depth to it and do just about anything. OSX has a much more powerful CLI, it's not even a contest. And that's where the true power of what an OS can do lies. I run a Hackintosh, so I get the uber CLI without the cost of actually buying a Mac.

Terminal > CMD

that is all ;)

Not junk, just overpriced. Actually, their laptops are probably among, if not the best designed and engineered you can buy, but not worth what they charge. People will clearly pay for hip and sexy, especially if they think owning that makes them special or cool.

After taking the plunge into the world of MacBook pro a couple of years ago I decided I probably won't go back until I can find a windows laptop with comparable trackpad hardware/drivers. I've yet to find one.

And that's the kind of answer I usually get. I didn't ask for a nub... I asked for a trackpad. :)

And why is anyone supposed to care? A TrackPoint is better than any TrackPad, the MacBook Pro's included.

But hey, if you want the inferior TrackPad, then Apple's is definitely among the best.
