Apple refurbs are great- like new, full warranty, and sometimes a substantial savings. Also, since OS X runs well on even core duo processors, you don't need to necessarily get into a specs match up to get a similar experience. This doesn't apply if you're a gamer, of course.

So does Windows 7.

I think an important part of comparing Apple computers with other manufacturers is to realize that Apple hardly ever gives any sort of discount. So MSRP of an Apple computer is what just about everyone will pay for it (+/- about 10% I would imagine). Whereas with Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc etc you can find deals all the time for far below MSRP.

For example. I have a Dell XPS 15 (latest model, L502x) that I bought about 8 months ago for $610. Core i5-2410m, GT540M 2GB, 1080p B+RGLED display (not IPS sadly, but it is still quite high quality), 6GB RAM, 500GB hard drive, has USB 3.0.
However if you went to dell's website and configured it right now (slightly newer CPU now and slightly bigger HD) it would cost $1049.99

To compete with price, I would have to get the Macbook 13" for $1200, but that's a major downgrade in screen resolution and graphics card (though of course an upgrade in portability and battery life). If I went with the 15" Macbook I would have to shell out a minimum of $1799 (over 3x the cost of my laptop).
For that extra $1200 I would get an i7 and a somewhat better video card, a good bit smaller and slightly lighter. It comes with 2GB less RAM, and a lower resolution screen (1080p vs 1680x1050)
EDIT: Actually the 1680x1050 screen is $100 more, the default is a 1440x900 one.

There is simply no way for me that those differences are worth $1200. I would pay maybe $300 extra for all that.

I had a similar sort of deal with a Dell XPS 8300 desktop with a Core i7-2600 for $400. The CPU itself still sells for about $300.

If you frequent deal forums like Slickdeals.net you'll see countless of awesome deals for PC desktop and laptops. Once in a blue moon does something better than 10% ever show up for an Apple desktop or laptop

I am not disagreeing with you with your points. All valid in my opinion.

I just wanted to point out though, that your laptop, compared to a MBP, is pretty dang ugly, bulky, and less sleek looking.

Looks are completely opinion based and therefore, unarguable. I personally dislike MBP's looks, but I can see why many people like it. But to argue that the MBP is defacto better looking is silly.
Also, there is no way the aesthetic value of MBPs is worth the enormous increase in cost they have, unless you have a very skewed sense of priority.

I'm curious, do you walk up and ask them if they're broke? And do you ask "hay did you buy that with your daddy's credit card?" How exactly do you know either?

To me it seems you make a shit ton of assumptions.

I have a bad habit of asking people how much they make/what their parents do.

This. If I'm honest, I think Macs look very feminine. Even if you think they look great, unless there's something wrong with you, there's no way that alone makes them worth it 2x more.

MBP are better looking to the average person though, this isn't arguable. Just like it's not arguable that more men will find Cindy Crawford attractive than oh, I don't know Ellen DeGeneres(sp?) Now you will find men who find Ellen hotter, but it's definitely going to be a minority. MBP's were designed around looks, where as only the HP Envy and a few select models from Sony appear to have any level of aesthetic thought put into them what-so-ever. And the Envy is really just HP's attempt at a MBP knock-off. So really the best looking PC laptop is a clone basically.

And the average person is dumber than a bag of rocks. Your point?

Looks are subjective. Thinking looks are objective because the majority of people agree is a logical fallacy.

I just bought a disposable HP laptop: quad-core A8, 6GB of DDR3, 650GB drive, discrete graphic Radeon 6620g, Win7 pro for $579.

They're not junk by any means... they're just overpriced.

I'd rather take a Lenovo ThinkPad over an Apple Macbook Pro, though, they're built just as well but are still around $500 cheaper.

Only problem there is the screen is subpar on most cheaper laptops. At least apple is using an IPS screen which makes a noticeable difference in viewing angles.

Incorrect. Apple uses higher-quality TN panels, not IPS panels. No Apple laptop has an IPS panel or the option for one, but their screens are better than average.

That's actually good, it means the heat isn't being trapped at the processor.

Not when its actually uncomfortable to hold/put on your lap.

I work at the UCLA and we rent out laptops for students. I'd say 80% its tolerable, but the 20% it gets crazy.

I use my laptops pretty relentlessly - prior to my current 13" MacBook Pro I have always pretty much killed them after 2 years or less. My MBP still looks essentially brand new after almost 3 years. Combine the stellar build quality, design and resale value and I don't understand the basis for claiming that it was "overpriced."

As an aside, for me build quality and ergonomics are more important in a laptop than having bleeding-edge hardware (though obviously I'd prefer to have both). Any computer made in the last 5 years or so will provide adequate performance for me - what I care about is a pleasant user experience, and Apple delivers that in spades.

You can get a ThinkPad for $500 that has comparable or better build quality. And the resale value argument is only good if you have buyer's remorse; there's no valid reason for selling a perfectly good laptop that has serviced you well for years.

All Macs except the 27" iMac are overpriced.

I just went to Lenovo's website and spec'ed a Thinkpad W520 to compare to the Macbook Pro 15", and saved $1000. <= That is winning.

All Apple laptops have TN panels, they don't offer a single model that even has the option for an IPS display.

If you want IPS in a laptop you have to go with HP or Lenovo.

I wouldn't call their laptops junk, but they are overpriced...which is why they won't get my business.

Now iPads...are ridiculously overpriced & won't be on my list of tablet considerations.

Yup. The dumber the user, the easier it is. IME, it's the Windows power users that have the hardest time switching.
I agree. When you set up an Ubuntu box for someone who doesn't do anything but check their e-mail and get on Facebook, they probably won't have a hard time switching from Windows.
I, on the other hand, am not very good with it. Especially with terminal commands and the file system.
HOW MANY FUCKING /'s DO YOU NEED?! :p

how about this as proof of apple being overpriced. sure its not a laptop but its a repair i was pricing out for a family member and one i just outright laughed at the apple service guy when i heard the price. stock price for a replacement cpu on a ~08 mac pro 8x is $1,499.00 thats what it costs to get the part in.. plus shipping.. plus whatever markup the business adds so as to stay in business..

and here's amazon
http://www.amazon.com/3-0GHz-Intel-Q...855117&sr=8-11
$360.20

oh and that's only one CPU, so for both...
$2,998.00-- Apple
$720.40-- Amazon
