A lot has to do with your lifestyle. If you exercise and eat well and manage stress, then you will live much longer and trouble free even if your genes suck.

And even good genes won't save you from all the problems of sedentary lifestyle + fast food.

While some diseases are completely random and can happen to a person with healthy lifestyle due to genetics, MOST diseases can be prevented by exercises and good food.

Everyone should read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. Your library may have it.

re: "I workout a lot and eat fast food all I want". Great. You burn the calories but it's like burning dirty fuel. Your system is still affected by fast food.

A good rebuttal to Fast Food Nation.

I mean, let's face it, FFN is a not so slickly packaged propaganda vehicle for PETA and anti-capitalists.

Christ let us live our lives and preach somewhere else.

Why should I feel guilty for only spending $2-3 on a meal made by somebody else vs. $5-6 + time made by myself. It's convenient, tasty, and does the job well for those who are young and don't have a family.

If you used the same quality ingredients to cook at home what Taco Bell does, aside from being appalled, it would cost you less than a buck.

Know what I offered today? An all you can eat buffet for $7.95 which included Roast Turkey, Sauteed Trout and, Brats with sides of mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, stuffing yams, peas, carrots, seafood chowder, chicken noodle soup and chili. Oh, almost forgot salad bar, cherry cobbler, strawberry shortcake and drinks included.

I eat out because of convience, time, and selection. I don't know how to cook Tika Masla, Jia Xu Pao (dumplings), Mole enchiladas, hell even typical middle-class american dishes are hard. I'll eat fast food sometimes but I eat out at other places to or take to go.

It's quicker, easier, and tastes better. Not all of us get our giggles from being Wolfgang Puck. Most of us probably suck at it and would rather go work out, hang with friends or loved ones, and play TF2 in the time it would take to sauté a piece of frozen chicken.

(edit) just re-read - apparently you were talking about fast food and not people who just eat out over cooking. my bad.

Well the current fast food system is environmentally unsustainable and rests on near slave labor of Mexican immigrants. So I wouldn't praise it as a perfect system. But I love my 1.00 Taco Bell tacos so I won't be a hypocrite and call for its immediate downfall. But something will give soon. I also find it ironic that the political site you just linked doesn't lambast the huge subsides given to fast food megacorps by the gov't, being a "pro-capitalist" group an all. -_-

And what if I enjoy both? I like a wonderful home cooked meal and enjoy cooking. But I also can appreciate the convenience and economy of what $3 can get me at Wendy's or McDonalds when traveling for work or while on the road for any number of other reasons.

Same goes for beer. I've been working my way through a batch of home brewed coffee stout that finished up in February. It's a beautiful beer that is so dark and rich it blocks light passing through a pint glass. But I still can appreciate the simpleness of the Miller Light sitting right next to it in the fridge.

I eat my own home made meals 79 times out of 80 and thoroughly enjoy them. My family all did as well growing up, ordering pizza or going out was a very rare treat. Perhaps it has something to do with what you were raised on? When I was active still in jobs, I got a subway sub once a day at least, which seemed to me just as healthy as eating at home, and indeed it was, so not all fast food is a bad thing. Even when I worked at McDonald's and Hardee's I barely ate there - to this day I can only stand a few things from either place.

I already know I am an unusual woman, but I don't think I am so unusual in these habits/tastes. I don't understand people liking the crap that for example mcdonald's and hardee's serves. I do infrequent taco bell and dairy queen, but at taco bell, I get one of the more healthy items there, the grilled stuft burrito, which is not as good as home made food, but is much more nutritious then most of the other foods there - I get it though because I love how it tastes, and dairy queen has very nice salads and wonderful ice cream. Again both are a rare treat for me.

Move out of the South West. All the workers here are white.

Environmentally unsustainable? Is that the new buzz word of the year? Try thinking outside the box and maybe we can touch base.

What does subsidies have to do with anything here? Not a damn thing. It was a rebuttal to an obvious propaganda piece for anti-capitalist PETA flunkies.

I have lots of reasons for not cooking.

I *like* the taste of most fast food. I enjoy it.

I can't prepare a meal in the time it takes to go get fast food.

I got tired of buying groceries that I had to throw out because they went bad before I could use them, so I tend to buy mostly non-refrigerated things plus milk and butter. That limits the potential menu severely.

I won't sit down and plan meals, requiring me to gather a list of ingredients, requiring me to shop for all the ingredients. Meal planning and grocery shopping is a PITA, and this must be factored into the overall time required to prepare meals.

Three days a week I have something to do in the evenings after work, no time to cook.

Fast food gives me far more choices than what I can make at home given my limited supply of ingredients.

I don't enjoy cooking.

Having said all that, I also quite enjoy a restaurant meal. But in my area the sit-down restaurants are too crowded at peak dinner time and I'm not going to wait in line for 20 minutes or more.

Oh why oh why have I not seen the error of my ways, thank you MagnusTheBrewer for opening my eyes that convenient fast food should never be eaten by me again.

I drive 25+ hours a week, maybe I should pack brown bag lunches in the morning.

OP, after reading your replies, it's clear that you are either ignorant, trolling, narrow minded, or just a mix of the three.

You obviously won't accept anyone's replies no matter how valid and supported they are. You are one of those people who likes to just force his opinion on other people and think less of those who don't agree with you.

Run out of other threads to troll in?

It has been very interesting to read the replies for the choices regarding food people have made. My observations have indeed been confirmed that the majority of people have little interest in what, when or, how they eat. As a Chef who has spent his life feeding others and giving hospitality, I obviously have a different focus.

I learned a long time ago that educating customers is a slow process and measured in individuals rather than guest segments. One of the biggest paychecks I receive is having a new customer thank me for my effort and enthusiasm.

Words can never convince anyone of the value of good food/hospitality so I will continue to convert disbelievers one meal/beer at a time. You're always welcome. :)

I'm giong to have counter your rant with the ideal of bratwurst. The americanized version fo the German classic is meant to be enjoyed in ballparks and accompanied by a cold brew. Concessions are essentially overpriced fast food with limited selection.

If there was a good fast food place that server bratwurst, I would eat there every day.
