I don't believe you would survive the onslaught of any nutritionist anywhere in the world with that statement, though I generally agree with the rest of your post. Calories in - Calories out = weight gain/weight loss at 5000 cal/lb. That being said, living on donuts and bacon probably isn't the best idea, and too much of anything (yes, even exercise!) is bad for you in the long run.

The key to most things health related is MODERATION, but since we're a nation of excess, that's not an easy concept for most Americans to understand.

Oh man, it took me three years to realize my swimming practice was an excess. 5 days a week, 2 hrs a day. Damn. And it was not just cruising around, hell no - it was to the max. Balls to the wall. My heart rate must have been peaking most of the time.

I quit it and never looked back. Now I total about the same amount of hours per week of exercise (10) but not nearly close to that hell in intensity.

Lesee. Homeade soup, yes. steak, chop, grilled chicken breast? NO!
I get out my foremann grill, slap on whatever meat based dish I want, close the lid and leave it to thaw for an hour, open it and spice the now thawed meat, plug it in, wait ~10 minutes, pull it off, and eat. total time actually working on it: 15 minutes, usually less. Those grills take about 3 minutes to clean.

Hummm, I don't want to sound like a snoob because I have one and use GF grill several times before but to have good meat <pork, steak, chicken>, I think it is better <taste> to slow cook with oil and hot pan. Don't forget the side dishes <salad, potato, etc> to go with those meats. That's why I only cook those meals on the weekends/holidays.

Most "experts" are pretty myopic anyhow.

And of course I do everything in moderation. I'm too lazy to do anything in excess. ;)

Bitter much? Curious how you edited out my humor. Don't like humor much, do ya?

An expert in any one field is by definition myopic. They FOCUS on one field.

Sorry you have a problem with me, Perk. Hopefully one day you can get over it.

BTW, I find it funny how an "Elite Senior Moderator" breaks the rules he is supposed to enforce by resulting to personal insults.

See, there's your complete lack of logic showing again: Disjunctive reasoning on your part.

Because an expert is an expert in one field does not in any way PROVE that they are not knowledgeable in other fields nor does it in any way PROVE that they are myopic as regards their field vis a vis ANY related field.

Your generalization is both stupid and smug.

Okie dokie, Perk.

In my 40 years of life I have found MOST experts to be rather myopic, spending the majority of their time and effort on one field at the expense of other knowledge. To be a true expert in any one field rather requires a very time consuming myopic focus on that one field.

I didn't say all, so I didn't generalize. But if saying I did makes you happy in the bitterness you wallow in, so be it.

Hope you get over me soon.

What's a true hippie?

Jesus, for one. Henry David Thoreau.

Frank Zappa and Jerry Garcia also come to mind.

In any event, NOT what some right-wing pinch-butt means when they throw that term around.

-Fast food requires almost no effort and is consistent in quality and quantity.

-It can be difficult to cook for one without being overly wasteful or producing far too many leftovers.

-Fast food is very quick and doesn't take up precious time that could be better utilized by sitting around waiting for something interesting to happen.

-Fast food is just like mom used to order and bring home before sitting you in front of the TV until bedtime.

1. You must be really white. Fast food restaurants have some of the blandest food around because its made for a mass market. Real flavour can only be found at home and in decent somewhat specialized restaurants.

2. I guess people prefer consistently bad versus sometimes good, sometimes bad.

3. True, you just have to work around it.

4. Sarcasm?

5. I guess I was lucky that fast food didn't exist where I grew up.

You mean someone whose appearance and general lifestyle they disapprove of? :p
I think we're on the same page, though.

People eat fast food because its cheap and it doesn't taste too bad.

As regards to health issues, a burger from a neighborhood sitdown restaurant or a fancy steak house will be on average far worse for you than a McD quarter pounder.

Yeah but it least tastes like a hamburger.

Yes true. I eat fast food less than 10 times a year (roadtrips etc). I spend a lot of money on food, both cooking with fine ingredients and dining out. The few times I do eat fast food, I find it to be a good value and doesn't taste too bad.

I suppose if wearing chain mail and a surcoat qualifies, then yes :shiftyeyes;
