Do you get nosebleeds up on that pedestal you've put yourself on?

The elitism on this forum is just pathetic. And it's nearly eclipsed by the busybody meddling.

In the words of The Princess Bride; "I do not think that word means what you think it does."

e·lit·ism or é·lit·ism (-ltzm, -l-)
n.
1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
2.
a. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class.
b. Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.

I believe all guests deserve favored treatment by virtue of their being guests. The only entitlement I enjoy is the right to question people's eating habits based on my profession and interests.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elitism

You believe you know better what people should do in their lives than they do. That makes you an elitist. You obviously feel the masses are too stupid and uneducated to live their lives correctly and you are here to save them. THAT makes you an elitist. You cannot STAND that others choose to do things in a way you do not approve of and with your facade of intellectual superiority you criticize what they do. THAT makes you elitist.

Next time try looking deeper than a simple dictionary definition.

BTW, I am 40 and by your narrow standards, eat like complete crap. I will outrun you, out lift you, and probably out live you. Not only that, but I will live a fullfilling life living my own life as I please and letting others live as they choose, not as I wish them to live.

I'll agree with the OP. For this very reason I eat fast food about twice a year. There's just better food out there, honestly. It might be cheap... but it sucks.

Give me something I can sink my teeth into.

I eat fast food because it tastes damn good. Don't think so? Apparently millions disagree with you. And I'm still a comfortable 125 lbs at 5'7", which helps with cycling (climb specialist! ;)). Sure I try to eat healthy overall, but I can't believe so many people are quick to dismiss McD's as "crap." You don't think french fries taste damn good?

OP, you have some valid points but here are my counterpoints:

1. At home, you don't have the tools or the skills to make your meat/meal as good as the restaurants <10,000 BTU oven is not cheap>.

2. Time constraints - good meals take at least 1 hr to make from begin to end. I am not sure I want to spend that much time to make a good meal after a long day at the office.

"ignorance, laziness and, the blind acceptance"???? Hummm....I will have to say laziness <at least in my case> is the main reason that sometimes I went out and order instead cook at home.

?Wine, women and song and the time to enjoy them.? ...in the perfect world, maybe. But I don't think I want to see my gf every night and drink or sing daily. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good tasty meal/social envent/get together/picnic as much as the next guy but some of us have other things to do ..in my case, I have to spend time to run my business after my regular day job.

Your point about taking an hour to make is spurious. It all depends on what you want to make and what you use as raw materials.
I'll give you a great few dishes as an example:

one can cream of mushroom (or of chicken) for each person to be fed. A cup of made rice (a half cup dried) for each person. a boneless skinless chicken breast for each person to be fed. A few standard home spices such as pepper. A bit of margarine or butter.
Pan fry the chicken breasts while making the rice, and heating the cream of x in the microwave. Put on a plate the rice, the chicken, and then pour over cream of mushroom. A very tasty fairly good for you meal in ten or so minutes.

A crock pot/slow cooker. Some baby carrots in a bag, some beef bullion, some of those pre-peeled small potatoes. Toss it all into the crockpot, turn it on, and 12 hours later you have an incredibly good meal. You don't even have to watch the thing at all as long as it is in a safe place like on top the stove.

This one does take a bit more prep, but can be done in advance. Fry some ground beef into spaghetti meat, seasoning how you like it (I use several spices, mainly seasoned salt). Freeze until ready to make the meal. Toss into a crock pot some spaghetti sauce, the meat, and a few spices to taste. Let for three hours, then stir as you make noodles. Lovely homeade spaghetti, the taste of it is insanely good as it has simmered in the crockpot for an hour or so.

Funny, I eat a lot of burgers and a high beef diet and I'm far from fat and disgusting.

Funny how fat America became AFTER the low fat diet craze started.

Just because you two are not fat (and are active athletically, I welcome that ;) ) does not mean your systems are clean. You go test your blood sometime, maybe you're in for a nice surprise in regards to bad cholesterol levels and such.

The problem with fast food is that it's unhealthy. It does taste good (thanks to flavor industry), it is 2 minutes to order and it is cheap. This is why it is hard to resist/quit it.

jaqie: Everybody that says cooking and washing takes time is right. However way you spin it, it DOES take time. Sure a few dishes can be done quickly, but I've cooked dishes that took me 3 hours of cooking time/washing dishes. This is not even counting shopping. Those dishes were restaurant quality though

I am not sure you are talking about me or not but I will reply.

Your meal suggestions sound good but some of us are not into it. For example, I don't like spaghetti/meatball/groundmeat type meals <don't ask me why, I just don't>. I also don't like to eat fried food as much as I can help it.

I like meals like homemade chicken soup, pho <Vietnamese noodle soup>, steak, porkchop, grill chicken breast. Those meals would need at least an hour or more from begin to end <preparation, cook, clean..the whole thing>, not just cooking time <as I stated in my previous post>.

Meh. I eat fast foods a few times a week and my total cholesterol was 120 and my triglycerides were 18. Yes 18.

I'll be the first to admit, I have a pretty bad diet. Fast food for lunch nearly every weekday for the last 3 years, and frozen TV dinners at home. I'll get a good meal once in a while, but only when it's not me cooking it. As others have pointed out, it is damn hard to cook for yourself without making enough food for a week...and gathering all the stuff together and spending 3 hours cooking it and cleaning up the dishes afterwards is not my idea of a good time either. And then the things you didn't use end up going bad in the fridge because you can't eat them fast enough.

My lunch options are very limited. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of places around here - but I get one hour for lunch. So that eliminates pretty much all of them except for the fast food spots and the cafeteria at work (blech). If I were to partake in ?Wine, women and song and the time to enjoy them? on my lunch break, I'd be fired so fast my head would spin. For many people, there's not always the option of taking the time to enjoy eating.

Magnus, what is the average "in and out" time for a lunch customer at your restaurant? If it's over 40 minutes, that wouldn't work for someone like myself.

For the record, I'm 5'11", 130 lbs. I had my blood checked last year - perfect on all levels.

Lesee. Homeade soup, yes. steak, chop, grilled chicken breast? NO!
I get out my foremann grill, slap on whatever meat based dish I want, close the lid and leave it to thaw for an hour, open it and spice the now thawed meat, plug it in, wait ~10 minutes, pull it off, and eat. total time actually working on it: 15 minutes, usually less. Those grills take about 3 minutes to clean.

because people are sheep.

I generally avoid fast food as I normally come away disappointed and bloated from the meal. GF and I do not eat out much, and when we do its usually a nice restaurant. Hmmm I should cook something good food for tonight.

want a cookie?

I cook quite a bit at home, and while many meals can be made in under 30 minutes including prep time, most take more, plus clean-up. At any rate, who cares....people need to live their own lives. I don't give a fuck what you or anyone else eats, and if you care what I eat, you need to get a life.

No, I don't., what I want is people to stop making excuses for themselves. I don't care what they do, but at least admit the truth to yourself for why...
And I also hope on the side that perhaps my ideas may not have been known to them, and that was the reason they were not integrated into their routine, so they may use the ideas to improve their life for their own sake...

So caring about others is considered rude now, Mikey?

Way to pay attention, Special K! :)

Yep, I'm 40. I work out regularly and I'm an all natural body builder.

This does not mean I'm in the gym all day. Just 1 - 1.5 hours a day 4 days a week is all it takes. Body building is about quality and intensity, not frequency.

I eat everything, "healthy" and "unhealthy," (there is no such thing, actually) and all things in moderation. I limit simple and starchy carbs as those, not high fat burgers, are what put fat on me if I over indulge.

Fatty foods doesn't make you fat, folks. Eating too much high energy simple carbs and living a sedentary lifestyle does that, along with a genetic predisposition for obesity. The low fat craze started before the obesity epidemic, so obviously watching fat intake does very little to control weight.

There really is only one way to remain healthy: All foods in moderation and regular exercise. Anybody who gives you an all or none solution is only setting you up to fail in the long run.

Disclaimer: If you have a genetic predisposition for heart disease, saturated fats should be limited.

Why should I feel guilty for only spending $2-3 on a meal made by somebody else vs. $5-6 + time made by myself. It's convenient, tasty, and does the job well for those who are young and don't have a family.

If you used the same quality ingredients to cook at home what Taco Bell does, aside from being appalled, it would cost you less than a buck.

How many times have you got out of a McYucks for less than $6?

Know what I offered today? An all you can eat buffet for $7.95 which included Roast Turkey, Sauteed Trout and, Brats with sides of mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, stuffing yams, peas, carrots, seafood chowder, chicken noodle soup and chili. Oh, almost forgot salad bar, cherry cobbler, strawberry shortcake and drinks included.

Meh. I eat fast foods a few times a week and my total cholesterol was 120 and my triglycerides were 18. Yes 18.

I live off of fast food (quite literally) and I just donated blood. If you donate they give you a cholesterol reading. Mine was 117.
I eat 3 or 4 meals a day. That's all I eat. I can't understand how people can randomly devour a bag of chips (I AM NOT TALKING 25 CENT BAG, I mean the huge fucking family size ones) in one sitting, perhaps watching TV. If I feel like snacking I'll usually have some sunflower seeds or make some soup; both are extremely satisfying.

My meals can look like this, for days in a row:
Breakfast: McSkillet Burrito (w/Hash browns and maybe a red bull)
Lunch: Chik-Fil-A Grilled Chicken Sandwich (combo)
Dinner: Take-out, for under $7 or 8

Add it up though. My diet is insanely high sodium (and my blood pressure is actually on the low side), in the middle when it comes to fat, and probably a little lacking in calories.

Cliffs:

I live off fast food.
My cholesterol is 117.
I weigh 135, very low BMI, 5'11.
I don't eat a lot, so it doesn't matter what I eat.

The fucking problem is all these poor people or those with nothing but free time on their hands because they never do anything with their lives don't understand is unless you are a teenager without their own kitchen, chances are you are grabbing fast food because you don't have time to cook and not much time to eat.

There are some fatties out there that just eat it because they like junk as well as some fit and trim people that like it as a cheat meal.

Yes you can cook quickly at home, yes you can pre package a lunch but no when I am stuck in the middle of a project I want to complete I can't just whip out my Betty Crocker EZ bake oven and go out to my car to retrieve the beef pasta with lentils that has been simmering in 120deg summer temps.
