Annoying and intrusive go hand-in-hand.

As for treating you like a criminal, if you want to get caught up in semantics, call it treating you like a POTENTIAL criminal. They have the choice of treating you as a potential repeat customer or a potential criminal, and they choose the latter. Not great customer service. You can mitigate risk without making your customers feel uncomfortable.

I'd say they're doing both. They're providing a local store with somewhat-competitive pricing on goods that you may not otherwise be able to find locally or within an acceptable period of time. That's what I would call providing a service that ellicits repeat business, so that part's done. Now, when you actually set foot in the store is when the potential-criminal treatment starts. However, I whole-heartedly agree that the customer should not be able to notice that they're being observed in a "potential-criminal" way.

Privacy? Would you rather go shopping while invisible so that what stores you go to and where you go in the store be kept a big secret or something? For fvck's sake, people.

oh so you would be ok with a sales person constantly in your face trying to sell your stuff from the moment you walk into the store to the time you walk out even after you tell them you're not interested? that's apparently ok in your eyes? i'd love to see this happen to you. i don't think you'd like it.

They have their little headsets on and report on EVERYTHING we do. I walk in and the guy is looking all devious as he's talking into his mic an explaining to everyone else that "We've got one coming, heading towards back of the store."

All of them are like that. There was an Indian fella looking at the cameras and I overheard one of them say "Watch him, don't take any chances." WTF, the things are bolted to the showcase.

And it's not just one OfficeMax, they all have this sorta big brother thing going on.

Are you serious???

christ....

Yes.

What made you come to the conclusion that I have not read the thread? Whatever it is, your evidences have brought you to an incorrect conclusion because I actually have read the thread.

Anyway, I do dislike being treated like a criminal. I keep asking for a valid explanation of how this is treating customers like criminals, but nobody can seem to give me an answer that proves as much.

"They're treating us like criminals!"
"How?"
"They're treating us like criminals!"
"Yes, but how so? What are they doing to you that should be reserved for criminals?"
"THEY'RE TREATING US LIKE CRIMINALS YOU MORON!"

it's been mentioned several times, that's why we all think you haven't read the thread:

-follow you around
-comment on your movement loud enough for you to hear
-comment on the products you are handling
-give specific instruction to watch around certain products

how's that?

Some people in this thread have jumped to the conclusion that it's about racism simply because the target was not a middle-class honkey.

You have folks in this thread who actually WOULD take their own advice in provoking the security detail into thinking that they were shoplifting, just to be dickheads. I'm sure these are the same folks that, if actually confronted about it, would bitch that they're being harrassed or unjustly accused.

The only person in here who mentioned being followed around by store security is Accipiter22, but that's pretty much a given whether you notice it or not. Plain-clothed security people following you around. Big deal. Did they impede your shopping? Did they stop you from shopping somehow? No. If you don't notice it, does it make it any less acceptable than if you DID notice a plain clothed guy following you around the store? No. Ignore them, get your shopping done, and get the fvck out.

oops, posted too soon.

How about we install a camera in your apartment/house so that we can watch and make sure you aren't doing anything illegal. Its just a camera right? It isn't intruding on you or keeping you from jerking off 14 times a day so nothing to worry about right? So when would you like it installed?

I'd be perfectly fine with the fact that the store chooses to operate this way. I would just choose to shop elsewhere. Hell I fvcking hate going into Best Buy and other stores where sales people are constantly in your face going "CAN I HELP YOU FIND SOMETHING? WOW THAT'S A GREAT PRODUCT YOU'RE HOLDING LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT IT BLAH BLAH BLAH." I hate sales people. However, I still go there to shop because it provides me either the best, quickest convenience, or the lowest price for identical product that I can get elsewhere that is less convenient or slower on delivery.

Nah, see, now you're on my property. If I were to install cameras around my place to watch the people I have over, that's my choice. You choose to come over and subject yourself to it. Nobody forces you to be here, just like nobody forces you to shop at OM. :)

I'm not talking about you installing the cameras. I'm talking about the local police doing it so they can watch and make sure you aren't breaking the law.

I know that. However, a video monitoring system at your local Office Max wouldn't be tied in to the police station, so your hypothetical question doesn't matter. :)

Sure it does. Both are watching you to make sure you obey the law. Neither had any reason to watch you other than the fact that you exist. Both presume potential guilt rather than potential innocence.

On a related note, I am quite sure that if people weren't stealing from OM, they would happily reduce their labor costs by not having all those people on the sales floor.

So I guess I would blame the people who force them to go to that extreme. They wouldn't be doing it if they didn't feel it was necessary. They could of course decide to put all the merchandise behind wire mesh and force you to get an employee to retrieve any item you want to buy. I think I like the current system better.

OM security detail and the police have two very different levels of authority. You can't just ignore a police officer if he wants to question you regarding theft andd continue shopping. ;)

Sure I can as long as I'm in the store. Not shoplifting unless I try to leave the store without paying for something.

And how would they know without watching you to see what you put in your pockets or otherwise hid from the clerk at the checkout line?

Like everyone else, with cameras. Some jackass walking around watching you and saying things like "he's headed to the back" "Be careful, watch him" is a helluva lot different than being watched via camera.
