He was my son's roomate while they were at MSA (Missouri Scholar Academy). My son said he was quiet, loved to play his clarinet and very smart. He could not believe that this happened to him.

I fully believe in stand your ground laws....especially when someone is protecting their home. However I will wait for more details before making a final judgement.

Does he have poor eyesight?
Is this a bad neighborhood with high crime?

Judging from the headlines it’s a common one for conservatives with a gun fetish. So I think it’s a good idea to remind him that that knock on the door might just be six armed cops.

The tv account I watched said the shooter is 85 years old. He opened the door, told the boy to go away or he'd shoot him, and then he shot him and after he fell down, he shot again. A site I read said the man shot before saying anything and then, after he fell, said “Don’t come around here.”

They said they didn't go for a hate crime charge because the penalty would be less than what they did charge which was assault in the first degree and armed criminal action - not familiar with that one..

Dunno how accurate that all is.

Good news is that the boy has been released from the hospital. Thank goodness the man was a bad shot.

I've heard that account confirmed. Also the last person (3rd house) who finally helped him forced him to lay face down with his hands behind his back before helping. Well thank God he wasn't shot in such a way where he couldn't reach behind him. He would likely be dead.

Here is the shooter.

This case is about 2 things. Guns and racism. The shooter should have NEVER been issued a gun license and a firearm. He isn't mentally mature enough to be a gun owner. This country's long term stench of racism led to his actions in trying to murder Ralph Yarl. I'm confident racism led to other houses not helping Ralph and treating him poorly. There may have been a level of fear in his treatment by the neighbors.

Based on what we know so far I would quantify this incident as

50% Racism
40% Irresponsible gun ownership. People owning guns who should not.
10% Fear
