I fully believe in stand your ground laws....especially when someone is protecting their home. However I will wait for more details before making a final judgement.

Is the old guy hard of hearing?
Does he have poor eyesight?
Is this a bad neighborhood with high crime?
Was the old guy tired?
Why did the 16 year old go to the wrong house?

Night time can be more confusing....I'd be very careful of opening the door. I'd also be careful of banging on anybody's door I didn't know. Might get shot!!!

You are a scumbag. I mean you made all my points for me.

I was listening to this in the car earlier.
This is utter BS.
It AMAZES me how selfish people are today.

If i saw someone begging for help bleeding, i would be out there trying to help him all I can, and at the VERY LEAST, if he is gonna pass away before the ambulance arrive, make sure he isn't alone.

I think that's the at least what bare minimum on what defines what "Morality" means.

The tv account I watched said the shooter is 85 years old. He opened the door, told the boy to go away or he'd shoot him, and then he shot him and after he fell down, he shot again. A site I read said the man shot before saying anything and then, after he fell, said “Don’t come around here.”

They said they didn't go for a hate crime charge because the penalty would be less than what they did charge which was assault in the first degree and armed criminal action - not familiar with that one..

Dunno how accurate that all is.

Good news is that the boy has been released from the hospital. Thank goodness the man was a bad shot.

Thank god this made national news, otherwise he'd probably be chilling instead of being charged.

But this is the culture the gun fetishists and white nationalists have brought us to.

Other than breaking down the door with an axe as another poster suggested, or shouting clear physical threats through the door, I can't see any circumstance where shooting someone through a door is legally justified.

They have stand your ground in MO, but it should be irrelevant. SYG only applies if there's an imminent physical threat to start out with. Unless there are unreported facts here, I can't see any such thing.

While I agree it is odd the homeowner was released after 24 hours, charging is the DA's decision and the DA has made no such decision as yet.

SYG is irrelevant because in jurisdictions without it would generally follow the castle doctrine and he was in his home anyway. The only question is whether he was acting in self-defense, which sounds almost impossible to justify here.

Why did the 16 year old go to the wrong house? Having a sister in that area; the street names are confusing and it was explained why he went to the wrong house. There are several similar streets and a slight typo in gps will take you to the wrong street.

Answers in bold. Ringing a doorboor or knocking on a door should never get you shot. You don't have to open the door.

We really need to start having conversations about mandatory liability insurance to own guns. Got to cover the healthcare bills for getting shot for no fucking reason by the same deplorable fucks that vote against you having any health insurance in the first place.

Shit like this just further slams home the point that we need far better studies on the *real* cost of guns in this country. It's not just a body count.

This 16 year old kid got shot in the head, got shot again and is still alive. He's not dead. So it's not murder. He's going to forever be cursed with medical costs, trauma and disabilities he likely will never recovery from. That doesn't show up on any radar other than some cherry picked stat about how much some vegetable black kid is costing tax payers.

If there was just a shooting and you don’t know the circumstances a bit of caution and situational awareness is actually wise. I certainly wouldn’t refuse help, but a couple questions and a look around first might save you from being the next victim. Doesn’t mean the victim in front of you is at fault either, but getting in the middle of a domestic or whatever is a dangerous place.

I know my first reaction is to just shoot anyone that might be lost, selling something, or otherwise in need, but then I remember that I’m not a fucking idiot.

This entire story is one sad microcosm of our country in 2023.

Get shot while you did nothing wrong and then nobody tries to help you.

Fucking shameful.

This kid shot, Ohio cops off scott free after dumping 40+ shots into an unarmed black man.

If cities burn down tonight in protest, I'm not going to be mad. At this point it's the only recourse many of us have.

I’m going to ask the same question as earlier. To me only 2 possible solutions to avoid this in the future

1. This guy was too mentally immature to own a gun. He should have not been allowed to purchase or had it confiscated

2. Arm black teens so they can fire back when racist white crackers decide to shoot without justification

What is the answer????? Are there any other solutions? What happens when black delivery people ring the door of racist white people? Does Amazon need to arm their black drivers?

What is the answer????? Speak the fuck up!!!

Just another reminder that every state that has adopted Stand Your Ground laws or other legislation to boost guns + castle doctrine has seen a disproportionate rise in violent crime since the laws took effect. Every. Single. One.

Think about that while Republicans are parading around NYC or Chicago.

Triple education budget nation wide, outlaw free speech that only exists for FUD. Wait 30 years and see if that has any effect.

Sobering question: how many people with dementia are out there owning firearms?

From this article:

Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, expressed anger in a statement over how the incident had played out.

Tonight, millions of Black parents across America are going to have The Talk again, this time adding another item to the list: don’t ring the wrong doorbell,” Johnson said Monday.

Sobering question: how many people with dementia are out there owning firearms?

God... That's an argument I didn't even think about. My grandma is pretty advanced dementia and they hid all the car keys. They won't have a real conversation or just get rid of the car. They have a shell game of hiding car keys and then once a month schedule a time someone gets her out of the house so my Dad can go over and drive it just to keep it somewhat used. Then it's a game to cover up the evidence.

If we are this big of cowards about taking away car keys from Grandpa I can't even imagine the conversation on guns.

At least my father in law knows his back is destroyed and he can't shoot them anymore. He's been trying to gift them to us(I don't want them). So that one is marked safe.
